Prairie Creek Greenway

A Gem of a Greenway

October, 2021 by thejake91739

prai-rie n. 1. A large open area of grassland.

Prairie Creek Greenway astounded me! Visiting from Southern California, I envisioned a flat ride along a meandering stream on a grass covered prairie. However, to my surprise, Platte City and Prairie Creek Greenway are within rolling, tree covered, scenic hills, and once away from the creek, the path is anything but flat. There are lots of hills, many of them steep, to get your heart pumping. Thank goodness these two senior citizens were able to activate their Swytch pedal assists as needed!

The ride through the greenway is hilly where it leaves the creek, but it is mostly enclosed within the shade of woodlands which kept us cool on an eighty degree afternoon in early October. The sound of birds, squirrels, crickets, and the creek add to the joy of this ride. Lots of curves, bridges, and a park-like setting make it fun to bicycle.

Be sure to discover the waterfall at a U-shaped pullout, most definitely the highlight of the ride for me! (That and seeing my first beautiful red cardinal in the wild! We don't have those in California)

The trail was especially popular with locals who, for the most part, were walking it. We encountered only two other bicyclists.

A couple of spurs take you along main roads and into upscale neighborhoods which the local residents must surely appreciate, but don't bother with them if you're there for the solitude of the greenway. Speaking of spurs, first timers will certainly want to utilize the Trail Link app to stay on course.

Also, be alert for a couple of spots where the trees have done a number on the asphalt with their roots. My wife was actually sent off the trail by protruding roots!

All in all, I'm confident the fine citizens of Platte City know what a gem of a greenway trail system they have, and it's certainly worth spending an hour or two for a couple of out-of-towners or out-of-state explorers like us!

Urban Trail (St. Joseph Trail System)

Urban Trail Hyde Park to Krug Park

September, 2021 by acwgdnybbk

We have electric bikes and enjoy checking out all the nearby trails. The Urban Trail in St Jo was great. It is very different from many others we have done. As in previous reviews this trail has a lot of hills so this gave us the opportunity to use lots of gears and PAS options. We enjoyed looking at all the different scenery along the way as we went through park, residential, older and newer areas and lots of squirrels. The whole trail is paved which was nice. The main trail is about 10 miles but there is a side trail to 29 that will add a few more miles to get a longer ride.

Southern Platte Pass is a great trail. It is well maintained. It links me to Parkville and Line Creek Trail. This trail links me to the Greenway.

St. Joseph Riverwalk

Easy Peaceful Trail with River Views

May, 2021 by therootfamily4

This is an easy trail to walk, bike, or blade. Very level. Easy parking at the Remington Nature Center, located at the north end of the trail. As of Spring 2021, the trail is closed at the Casino, but the trail south is pleasant.

Riverfront Heritage Trail

Need to pay attention

October, 2020 by tgold6141

The part by the river that starts by the casino was nice but even on a quiet Sunday evening was difficult to navigate with the walkers and scooters. The elevator is still broken so the bike gets carried up 6 flights of stairs. Beautiful views of the river. The path through the city is not clearly designated and mostly up hill. We gave up and turned around but still loved KC.

St. Joseph Riverwalk

Parts are beautiful, others need to be repaired and the areas around it cleaned up. Not worth a special trip to use.

Prairie Creek Greenway

Something for everyone

August, 2020 by barbaraspencer

Paved paths for walking, scooting and biking. Lots of butterflies and insects. Reclaimed prairies. Frequent natural seating/rest areas. Bridges over creeks and even WATERFALLS in Prairie Creek with access if you’re willing to hold onto a tree or two. We only explored about a third of it and we can’t wait to go back!

A great woodland trail for walking & biking. You can follow beautiful Line Creek Trail through the woods on a well maintained trail and it’s only 15 minutes from downtown.

Missouri Riverfront Trail

A Valuable Transportation and Recreational Asset

March, 2019 by kirbyfarren

As of summer 2018 the Riverfront Trail is open it's full length from the western trailhead at 9 Highway to the eastern one in EH Young Riverfront park. I ride it regularly, find it to be in excellent shape and quite peaceful.

Starting at the western trailhead the trail is asphalt as it winds through quiet woods in the bottomland next to the Missouri River. As you continue, the trail climbs up to the Quindaro Bend Levee where it becomes pea gravel. The trail travels under Interstate 635 and 169 Highway before dropping down from the levee adjacent to Argosy Casino. From here, the trail becomes concrete and parallels the roads. Traffic into the casino can be heavy at times, so be mindful at road crossings. The trail finally ends just past the casino at EH Young Riverfront Park. Directly across the casino you can also access the Line Creek Trail, which will lead you into downtown Riverside and provide access all the way up to Barry Road, as well as the Briarcliff Linear Trail.

Eventually the Missouri Riverfront Trail is supposed to connect to English Landing Park in downtown Parkville. A concrete path has been poured leading to the park and is rideable, but it's exit (only 50 yards or so shy of English Landing) is currently gated off. I suspect this is due to a railroad right-of-way issue, as the path would need to be perilously close to the busy railroad tracks. Hopefully this connection is finished soon, as it would provide a car-free commuting route between Parkville and Riverside.
