Hampton Spur Bike Trail

Disappointed

March, 2024 by susancnett

I am not sure where the 5-star ratings are coming from- maybe we only saw the worst part, but we were unimpressed. We only did the southern tip of the trail. It is a wide sidewalk, separated from the road by a grass median strip that is only about 2 feet wide at parts.

The concrete was not in the best shape, and in a couple of places where the concrete had heaved, they had not milled them to make them safer for folks on smaller wheels, like scooters or rollerblades.

There were numerous street crossings, and the "trail" runs in front of stores and gas stations.

I think the best thing about the trail is that it connects other sidewalks, so if you live or stay in the area you can get to places without adding your car to the already heavily traveled streets.

McQueen's Island Trail

Poor maintenance

November, 2023 by larrydixon2051

Mixed maintenance: At least 7 areas of tidal over wash from 40 feet to 200 feet in distance with some washouts reducing trail to one lane rut. The size of the gravel used for maintenance is too large: 2" rocks were common.

Truman Linear Park Trail

Nice new path

October, 2023 by p_spivey

Hubby and I biked from Isle of Hope to Norwood tavern and then down Central Rd. to pick up this trail. There are some tricky road crossings, but the lights work in your favor. The path itself was really nice! Smooth divided concrete down to Bacon Park and around Lake Myers then back again. We continued on following Harry S Truman highway, but the path remained insulated from the highway noise and very shady! Once we reached Derenne, we turned around since the path was going to end soon. I hope they decide to extend this trail to Deleseps St.

Beautiful trail

December, 2022 by dd5rz2q65y

I came here for a morning run and was very pleased with how scenic the trail was. Some parts are still under construction and is not suitable for biking. Also, try to get here before 9am and you don’t have to pay any entrance fees. Also, only the south entrance is accessible.

The trail is very scenic,Still in a state of disrepair with weeds. One bridge has already started to re wash out.The recent repairs with the gravel has made some parts more like a trail run.No restrooms or port a John.

Hampton Spur Bike Trail

Concrete Sidewalk

September, 2022 by mathteacher45

This trail is really a multi-use sidewalk with many intersections, traffic lights, lots of motor vehicle traffic, lots of starts and stops, with users who don't understand the protocol for using a multi-use trail safely and courteously. If you are a serious cyclist, I do not recommend this trail for all the above reasons.

Paved and well marked. Restrooms at each end. Bring your bug spray!

St Simons

August, 2022 by islandermom

We found bike paths all over the island. We could bike out of our VRBO which was on Demere Rd and go to the beach, restaurants and explored the Hampton Spur. Make sure you get to Dolce Dough for your morning donut and a southern Soul for BBQ.

The Trail Has Reopened!

July, 2022 by 4c6mtjbn5d

My husband and I walked the trail and returned after a few days with our bikes. The only entrance is at the Fort Pulaski gate area. The last mile of the trail is still being cleared, however, we had no problem riding our bikes to the end.

The main section is almost done. Hopefully they open it this summer and close off only the section that still needs repairs (from the curve to Elba island).
