Feb '04: Started at the park and things went sour. Downed trees, homeless encampment and debris from highway construction made areas impassable. I gave up, returned to parking and took a hike in the opposite direction. The path along the river is bike-able and promising but before you go, check conditions and wait until the highway construction finishes and the area is cleaned up.
It was certainly hillier than I expected. I have ridden many trails I have found on TraiLink and this is on the top of my list of great trails.
We did all 9 miles and it was amazing. Lots of hills and even the south river bridge, would recommend this trail if you are looking for something challenging
We did from a highway to east end road and barely needed to stop, not a lot of turns and not a lot of hills, definitely would do the rest when paved
We had a nice time biking this trail. Lots of downhill depending on where you are going, would recommend this trail.
Ride this trail today (East side) from Mansfield to the bridge. Nicely paved all the way, well shaded and beautiful scenery. Very slight fade in places but nothing steep. Talked with a volunteer who said the closed bridge section will hopefully be open in late 2024.
Good parking at Vaughters TH. Trail is wide, not to much traffic, plenty of shade and has several ups and downs. Will definitely be back to check out the spur trails.
We started this trail yesterday and we went again today! This is a GREAT trail! This trail is clean, welcoming and very pleasant to ride ! We will definitely be putting this trail in rotation!
The TRASH cans have been full for MONTHS. I’ve been riding this trail since Nov-Dec and the SAME Trash is in those cans!!!!! Then there’s a spot pass Gresham Park going up a hill and through through and under a Brigde that’s now blocked OFF by huge cement blocks, which Takes away from my ride and SUCKS but the same trash can going up the hill is still full of condoms , tampons etc etc ! This trail needs the same care the silver comet receives !
The trail now connects downtown Athens to Winterville road. It's a fun couple miles to bike or hike on smooth pavement the whole way. There are water fountains and benches as well. Lots of fun to connect the Firefly to the North Oconee Greenway and bike about 10 miles around Athens!
As of June 2023, the westernmost endpoint (Constitution Road) and parking area (West Side Place) are closed off. We had to access the trail at Gresham Park. Otherwise, a great trail.
