Mass Central Rail Trail

Northampton Bikeway section

July, 2020 by jadsmith001

Beginning at the eastern point in Northampton, this is not well signposted. It connects with the western end of the Norwottuck trail heading west by turning right (turning left goes to the Manhan trail) at the T junction once you have gone through a tunnel having crossed the Connecticut River and crossed a couple of roads. It takes you to Florence / Leeds including the Look Memorial Park in Leeds. Heading west, having turned right onto this trail from the Norwottuck trail it goes behind a commercial building and seems to stop. At this point you come out between these buildings facing a road. Cross this road at the traffic lights and go through the Stop and Shop parking lot to the left of the supermarket building. There is an official gap in the fence where you can join the rail trail. It is not marked. Follow the trail to the right. It is a little bumpy with roots to start with but is a nice scenic paved trail.

Manhan Rail Trail

In good condition

July, 2020 by jadsmith001

Generally this trail is in good condition, paved all the way, few lumps and bumps with tree roots etc. The bit that isn't marked well is where it joins the Norwottuck trail in Northampton. If you start on the Norwottuck trail heading west this trail begins by turning left once you have gone through a tunnel having crossed the Connecticut River and crossed a couple of roads. The other direction - that also is not marked - takes you to the Northampton bike path to Florence / Leeds - more about that in the respective review for that bike path. The Manhan trail crosses over Main Street right by the railroad station and takes you through Northampton - a good interesting ride on to Easthampton and Southampton where it dead ends.

East Bay Bike Path

Construction

July, 2020 by mjharrison

There is currently detours at two places In Barrington where wooden bridges are closed. This is a major nuisance. Does anyone know if there are plans to rebuild these bridges and if so when the trail will be back to normal. I love this trail but would have second thoughts about riding there again till this is corrected and right now I see no indication there is preparation to fix this.

Minuteman Commuter Bikeway

Miniteman Trail

July, 2020 by jmarcinkevich

An excellent paved trail, with many beautiful places to stop and take in, take a break for lunch, or refreshments! A couple bike shops along the way, just in case, or if you need something. Veer off at Mass Ave to go thru Harvard and Cambridge, lots to see & do!

Neponset River Greenway

This is a GREAT trail for biking. Goes all the way to Pope John Paul Park in Dorchester.

Pine Tree Brook / Popes Pond Path

better for walking

This is a lovely oath path but it’s pretty bumpy, not good for road bikes

Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

so pretty

July, 2020 by saraanneshea

Leisurely, very well maintained trail. We rode out of Acton which I think is the best part of the trail and also the newest. It started down-pouring so we didn’t make it the whole way (would have loved to see Heart Pond). Parking in Acton is at a TeamWorks location and there is parking at various parks up the trail as well.

Neponset River Greenway

nice ride

July, 2020 by anne94

We loved this bike ride with beautiful river views, old mills and even a section that was a raised bridge through lush green wooded area (The bridge was wooden and it felt a bit like you were flying through the jungle). Rode from 7:30 am - 9:00 so was not crowded. Good 15 mile ride!

Nashua River Rail Trail

Nice ride through nature and small towns

July, 2020 by sharnjeff

Starting in the Nashua parking lot (northern terminus) head South. In a few miles, you travel through the town of Pepperell. Another 5 miles, you reach Groton center. The 12 mile trail ends in Ayer. Along the way, you ride parallel to the Nashua River and Pepperell Pond through woods and farms. You may see beaver lots of birds. It’s a pleasant and easy ride you are sure to enjoy.

Nashua River Rail Trail

Nice, level ride through woods and marshes

July, 2020 by vlh2

This trail is great on a hot day, with most portions being shaded; a few open areas get pretty warm, but they are quickly ridden through. 12 miles to Ayer, where a small shady park next to the Town Hall provides a nice spot for a picnic lunch. You can take a slow, steady pace or cruise through at a good clip as you please; just be aware of the other cyclists (some on training wheels), skaters, and walkers. A bit more crowded than usual today (Thursday before the 4th of July), but not awful. One of our favorites!

Mass Central Rail Trail

Westwood to Wayland section

June, 2020 by jadsmith001

This section has been open for a year or two now (June 2020) and is excellent condition all along following the power lines. Approximately 4 miles long end to end with nice smooth black top ideal for cycling, now also attracting walkers, skaters etc. There are footpaths into the adjacent woods.
There is a car park at the Wayland end easily accessible from the intersection of rte 126 and 27. At the eastern end the last access point is at Church Street, Weston. Further east it just dead ends at a decrepit bridge.

Nashua River Rail Trail

Great Trail and Fun for All Levels!

June, 2020 by nhsteeler

We started at the far north end in Nashua where there is a decent sized lot. About a mile in you cross the state line where there is a second parking lot. Pepperell is about 3 miles from there, and there is an ice cream stop there you should hit. Trail is well kept, and marked. We completed the whole thing round trip in 2.5 hours. For small ride do Nashua to Pepperell.
