Geocaching Along the LVRT

November, 2016 by movillesmiths

There are two great geocache series on the east end of the tail. Beginning near Joe's Pond and ending near GoodFella's Restaurant is the Vermont Star with 50 caches. Picking up there is the Maple Leaf which continues on to St. Jay with 40 caches. To obtain the correct coordinates of the caches you must answer questions about VT and maple sugaring. When we did the star, we did it in two segments and I rode back on the slightly uphill trail with no problems to get the truck. When we did the leaf, we left one vehicle in St. Jay so as not to have to ride back. Bodda rides an older, single-speed tricycle and had no problems on the trail. Though we live in Morrisville, we have only tried one short segment of the trail there but have heard great things about it and want to try it soon. It is hard to imagine the work that went into cutting through the ledges and filling the gullies. When you drive routes 15 and 2, it's hard to believe how hilly they are but just a short distance away is the almost level rail trail. Gramp

Northern Rail Trail

The best rail trail in the state

October, 2016 by mrchuffy

This trail is easily ridable from end to end in a day: the surface is quite good esp compared to other rail trails in the state and there are plenty of services along the way not far off the trail. Its also interesting in that there are many bridges, scenic views, points of interest (like Potter Place) and its mostly rural. Try it, I think youll not be disappointed!

Keene to Walpole

September, 2016 by janiebee

I took a touring bike, and I was glad for my 48cm tires. The section near Keene was smooth, but a few sectionS were sandy, muddy or rocky, high curb cuts at road crossings, aND eroded road, in one section. I didn't encounteranyone for miles. As a solo woman, im always wary, but pepole were friendly, but respectful, and I felt safe.

DoverBike

We Broke this into a few sections and rode the entire trail this year. Canaan to Danbury was slightly overgrown on the Canaan end(need a Mt. Bike)but the rest was great. Good places to stop along the way. Our favorites are JJ's pizza in Franklin and Salt Hill Tavern in Lebanon. Don't pass this trail up, it is one of the best around.

Hillsborough Recreational Rail Trail

Interesting!

September, 2016 by singingchefjen

I walked this trail from the Deering Fish and Game to Angelo's Restaurant in Bennington. It was difficult in some area and there were quite a few ATV's passing by. I can see where it might by hard to ride a bicycle on this trail, but I made it on foot. I came across a few salamanders and was very surprised by a large blackish snake on my way back.

Troy to Keene

August, 2016 by maisanna_tl

Picked up the trail from Troy to Keene which was mostly downhill and ended in a neighborhood. If you have google on your phone, you can bike to the center of town where all the shops and eateries are. From where the trail ended, it was a few miles to town. The entire route was unpaved and very rough. I highly recommend a mountain bike but it is doable on a hybrid. It's all uphill on the return to troy. Great work out! :)

Beautiful Cambridge Jct to Morrisville

August, 2016 by alanw.belcher

I rode Cambridge Jct to Hyde Park & return one day, then Morrisville to Hyde Park another. The parking area in Cambridge Jct is very nice. There's a nice shelter with portapotty and even a train theme picnic area adjacent. Smuggler's Notch Ski Area has done a lot to improve this spot this summer (carpenters were working on the train the day I was there).

The trail from there to Johnson is pretty much level, with a few small/short grades, the trail is crushed granite hard-pack. The town road crews maintain the trails in their municipality, and some cut the brush more often. Sometimes the grass & weeds will whack your shins as you ride, but the tree limbs had been kept off the trail. You ride along the river, through fields of fodder and forested areas.

Johnson has a beautiful kiosk with water and a portapotty, and downtown is just a half mile away, down Depot St. From there to Hyde Park is more fields, forests, river and a beautiful through truss bridge.

Hyde Park to Morrisville is mainly uphill. If you go east to west it's a leisurely ride. This section is mainly wooded, with high fills down to the river in places. The Lamoille River is always nearby. You also cross quite a few roads, and the through truss bridge in Morrisville.

Just west of Morrisville village you pass right behind the Lost Nation brewery, and many trail users stop to sample their creations. The depot in Morrisville is a restaurant as well. And about 1/4 mile south of the depot is a bike shop if you need any supplies. Parking in Morrisville is adjacent to the depot.

I went a short distance east of Morrisville, even down the unimproved section. Not sure how far you can go, but I do know there are a couple of bridges removed. The trail is railroad ballast, with tall grass/weeds.

Ammonoosuc Rail Trail

again, disappointed.

August, 2016 by DrMemory

I reviewed this trail a few years ago.

There is still a fair amount of ballast and gravel to ride through, but less than I remember. However, the overall condition of the trail has deteriorated since my last visit. Specifically, holes and washboards. Maybe this isn't as noticeable on an ATV, but on a bike it's miserable, even with a suspension. It got so bad, that when I returned (I went from Littleton to Bath and back) from Bath, I got on the road (US302) and stayed there for 9 miles before returning to the trail.

This seems to be more of an ORV trail than a bike trail. I saw 20 or so ATVs but not a single bike. ATV riders were friendly and considerate.

The scenery was a little better than I remember.

Still, as a bike trail, this one leaves a lot to be desired. 4 of 10.

Toonerville Rail-Trail

ok but not great

August, 2016 by andrewhelan

Directions to the Hoyt's Landing traihead are poor. Should say, "small sign on the Vermont side, just before you cross the Connecticut River into New Hampshire."
This trail is nicely paved, but too industrial and too many cars for our taste. Vermont is late to the casual biking game and doesn't seem to place much if any emphasis on it. Happily, New Hampshire is just the opposite (figuratively and literally.) Many fine trails in New Hampshire. Vermont: Get with It.
