Ocmulgee Heritage Trail

Is this the fault of the road construction?

March, 2026 by lauren.blais.7

Visited because we were in town for the Cherry Blossom Festival. Should have looked at the trail here on TrailLink before attempting. Short version: entrances to the trail were blocked, and what we were able to get to was overgrown, or lined with construction or trash, or occupied by people in tents. The new road bridge over the river has a good wide path, but we didn’t proceed down the ramp back to the trail for more of the reasons stated above. I don’t know if the current condition of the trail is solely the fault of the construction or what. But I’m sure the trail advocates in Macon are devastated… it’s clear there was a big investment at some point that has completely fallen off. So disappointed. I hope there’s a new wave of clean up, trail construction and restoration soon.

I started the trail by Camellia garden, rather I attempted to start. The path is not walkable due to construction. It was muddy and not worth the attempt. Very disappointing.

Not worth the time

Most of trail is blocked by road construction. Can ride a little in the National Park but have to stay on paved roads….they have some nice hiking trails but off limits to bikes. Find some place else to ride until construction is completed….probably 2026 or 2027.

Entrance to trail through Central Park was terrible. Homeless, trash, feces, etc. Scary and sad. The trail really could be beautiful

Feb '04: Started at the park and things went sour. Downed trees, homeless encampment and debris from highway construction made areas impassable. I gave up, returned to parking and took a hike in the opposite direction. The path along the river is bike-able and promising but before you go, check conditions and wait until the highway construction finishes and the area is cleaned up.

Decent Trail

I ride this trail regularly since it's near my home. It's especially nice that it links to the very nice bike path that runs through Albany, GA and connects to the rails-to-trails project that will eventually go from Albany to Sasser. The rails-to-trails portion isn't paved yet but you can still ride 10 plus miles on the dirt path, part of the way to Sasser. All-in-all I can start at Cox Landing, ride the paved trail to Turtle Park in Albany, then ride the city bike path to the rails-to-trails path, ride part of the rails-to-trails path, then return to my starting point while covering 20 plus miles total.

Ocmulgee Heritage Trail

Disappointing

April, 2022 by gstarr_tl

The gate connecting the trail from Ocmulgee Mounds to the Heritage Trail was locked and a sign said "connection no longer available". Signage from parking at Central City Park was poor. Along the trail from the park we encountered major highway construction with lots of mud in 2 different places. We crossed through places where homeless people were camped. We never got to any interesting areas of Macon. In the section we did, the streets we went on were in high traffic areas with lots of commercial properties and fast food type restaurants. Based on what I had read about the trail ahead of time, we were very disappointed with what we found.

Nice trail

Currently under construction. Will be nice trail when construction is complete. Ample parking and nice historic exhibits at main office. Will return in the future.
