My friends and I meet at Lions Field in Elizabethton and take a vehicle to the trailhead in Johnson City where we start our 4 miler. The trail is wide enough for runners, bikers and walkers to navigate past each other safely and easily. The trail is chat/gravel and from the JC trailhead, mostly a gentle downgrade. This portion of the trail is scenic; woods, countryside, stream. The last 6 miles of the trail traverse Elizabethton and are mostly urban. The trail is heavily used, especially on weekends, from dawn to dusk. We do this run weekly and it’s one of my favorite trails.
Very nice trail for my wife on her disability scooter and me on my e bike.
We rode the trail from Elizabethton starting in the late morning heading west. Road crossings in Elizabethton were a bit challenging, besides the fact that there are quite a few in a short distance, they come at sharp angles. Have your flashers on and watch the traffic carefully. The remainder of the trail to Johnson City was very nice. I look forward to riding the trail again in the future.
Dropped in at Gibson station and tried to ride towards Cumberland gap. It was a no go very quickly because the trail is no longer maintained by the national park.........Budget cuts! We were riding on overgrown grasses/weeds which is no fun at all! Turned around and rode towards Wilderness Road State Park. Lovely ride in the shade with just a few spots that were wet from the heavy rains from the last few days. August 14 was hot and humid with some mosquitoes along the trail! Did a few loops in Wilderness Rd., State Park where they were having some actual reenactments back in the fort! All in all lovely country views. The buffalo were in the corner right next to the trail...sat at the picnic table and watched them chew! There was a new calf! eat all get
Overall nice trail. Some bumps with tree roots through the blacktop and some patch jobs.
Very nice trail, minimal parking, but meant more for walking. Very busy with walkers.
The map is not very understandable if u r not local. Use Apple maps to locate the actual trail head. This gave us an address that was a super short preserve trail and AllTrails did the same. So load and inload the ebikes on a 93 degree day with no shade was not fun. Finally found the trailhead. I use a dog trailer for my pup so I do not like street riding and had no real idea where to go but went both directions from the park, each way until it was all urban, next to a busy street one way and a lovely neighborhood the other way but to hot to ride too far out of the shade. With the dog, just looking for long shady paths. Would have like to explore mire. Maybe next time in the fall.
The Townsend trail is all paved, wide enough for 2 bikes to pass each other. I take my dog in a trailer behind my ebike. The trail is on both sides of the road. The one on the right side is further away from the road and more hilly. The one on the left side has more road noise, once u get away from the river. It is the side with all the businesses on it so lots for driveway bumps. You can connect to the other side by 2 different bike tunnels so u don’t have to cross the road. We rode on a Thursday so traffic was so so but enough to make up want to ride the other side. Not a very interesting trail but nice enough.
Easy peasant ride. All paved on both sides of the road. Nice spots to stop, shop, eat and drink. Close to Cades Cove and entrance to Smoky Mountains. Worth the visit.
A few soft sandy spots where the trail has had fresh crushed gravel brought in, but a nice easy ride. 2 first time riders, 2 mediocre riders, 2 kid trailers. Visitor center is very nice
The bridge is out by patriot park so the trail is now only about .8 miles long, and it is not very well marked
