High Bridge Trail State Park

Well Maintained

August, 2021 by danaprn

We took our e-bikes last week (Aug ‘21) and it wasn’t crowded at all. Rode from Farmville over the bridge and to one end. It ends quite abruptly. I would have given 5 stars if the amenities on the trail spurs would have been identified on signs. We will definitely return to bike the other half and back (30 miles). Great free parking, too!

Virginia Capital Trail

Outstanding trail. My wife dropped me off in Richmond and meant me in Jamestown. Rode it on June 12th 2021. It wasn't crowded at all and the only thing I would say is the trail isn't wide enough.

High Bridge Adventure

June, 2021 by sandymo

We took our tandem 29er out and back both ways from Farmville. As others have said, the main attraction is the High Bridge, and its great. The trail is very well maintained and has plenty of bathrooms along the way...but as others have said, not a lot of places to get water. Make sure you have plenty, especially on these 90° days. Much of the trail is shaded so that’s a plus. Except for the bridge, it’s probably not a destination trail yet as there’s not much in the way of places to stop along the trail. Still, it’s a great place to get some miles. Some have mentioned the crowds but we saw none of that on a Sunday.

Virginia Central Railway Trail

A nice Trail

Great for daily walks in around the city. One downside...you have to cross RT 1 to finish up the last .75 miles of the trail. A bit of a pain, but overall, it's a nice round trip walk.

Virginia Capital Trail

Nice trail, but facilities are limited

April, 2021 by dcsnyder

Nicely paved trail, mostly flat from Jamestown to Charles City except the bridge over a river. Rolling hills as you go towards Richmond. We did a two day ride from Jamestown to Richmond, then the next day back. Richmond along the river is beautiful. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Downtown, just a few blocks from the start of the trail.
The only reason for four stars as facilities, like rest rooms and shelter are very minimal. Some trailheads that have rest rooms, could be a mile off the trail.

Great Shiplock Park out & back

April, 2021 by sandymo

Great 40 mile ride on the trail today. Not much parking at the park, but found ParkMobile parking a few blocks away in Shockoe Bottom. There’s a few more minor hills at this end, but we picked up less than 1,000ft of climbing in the 40 miles and nothing was over 6%. It’s not a big deal for anything with gears, but certainly not for a beach cruiser or an old 3speed. The scenery was great and the trail wasn’t crowded during the week. We grabbed dinner at Hot Chicks and would recommend the Nashville style Hot Chichen. The trail is awesome and well maintained. I especially liked the mile posts each mile and the many historical plaques.

Virginia Capital Trail

You know you want to ride it!

A wonderful 50 mile, paved, off road bike trail between Jamestown (first capital) and Richmond (current capital), Virginia! We did a video of our ride this fall that is on our YouTube channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

Fall ride 11-2020 on the High Bridge Trail

November, 2020 by wreinsel

Rode last weekend (11/7 and 11/8) and the temps were in the high seventies! Rode from the trailhead at Prospect to Pamplin and then to Farmville and back to Prospect for a 32 mile round trip. The trail is pea gravel and not as smooth as crushed limestone for sure. It's more difficult and a slower ride. Stayed at the Hampton Inn which was super clean and had contactless entry - but it was a bit over-occupied IMHO during Covid. Second day we rode from the Camp Paradise trailhead and rode the 1 mile or so to the High Bridge. Got there at 8am and spent maybe 15 minutes on the bridge watching the birds and enjoying the view. Saw maybe 3 others. Rode into Farmville and had breakfast at Walker's Diner! Super great food and could eat outside. Then we rode from Farmville to the other end of the trail which is very uneventful (just a dead end in the woods) and back to Camp Paradise for another 30 miles or so. When we got to our car at 1:30pm the lot was very full!! It was a beautiful ride but I wish it was paved! We did it on a Specialized road bike and a Trek 7.5 Hybrid.

A linear Virginia State Park with a spectacular bridge, beautiful natural setting and really well maintained bike pathway! Don’t miss this great ride! You can even do a metric century if you ride both ways since the trail is 32 miles long!! 😎 We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.
