New River Trail State Park

Gorgeous, remote yet well maintained trail

August, 2020 by kennethrwettig

Whenever your taking the family on a trip to a place no one you know has experienced, it is a bit nerve wracking. New River exceeded any expectations we had. The Mill Race campground at Foster Falls is a total gem, with a really fun section of rapids that you can tube down. The campground is well supported by a camp store (which rents bikes and water craft). While the whole trail is really picturesque, the section from Galax to Fries Junction (along Chestnut Creek) is really stunning. Tons of cute bridges and great places to take a dip. The one thing to note is that the trail is remote. There are no towns along the way so you do need to pack your food and water for the day. I would highly recommend this trail to cyclists of all experience level, provided they packed enough food and water for the day.

Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail

Very scenic

July, 2020 by stbarber7

This was more challenging with a steady climb to Damascus and even steeper after Damascus. Very pretty scenery. Gravel was more challenging than paved and even the GAP but worth a trip to ride it.

Burke Lake Loop Trail

so beautiful!!!

July, 2020 by mjgaytan

Not hard to do, difficult enough to present a challenge for a beginner, super enjoyable, big trees guarding the entire loop and fantastic lake views

New River Trail State Park

River bridge closed

July, 2020 by timfisher58

Great trail with lots of scenery and very clean and no potholes. Altho the bridge over the river on the north end is closed due to vandalism.

Tobacco Heritage Trail

OK. The paved portion in nice; the rest of the trail: ugh! Atractive woodland setting, but poorly maintained. Frequent sections were marked by deep sand and loose gravel. Very tiresome to navigate and ride. And not a tobacco plant within miles. LOL

Southern Tip Bike & Hike Trail

fun, easy first trail

July, 2020 by laurascag

This was my first bike ride on a trail with my husband and small dog (flipped into a basket) and it was perfect. All paved, almost completely flat. It’s actually 10 miles out and back if you do the whole trail. It was a hot day, but a lot of the trail was shaded.

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail

I enjoyed the walk across the bridge. There are some inclines for a bit of challenge.

Hawksbill Greenway

I enjoyed riding here with my family. A little crowded but if I went earlier in the morning I am sure that would have been better.

Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail

Time well spent

July, 2020 by jessica.stewart876

I am from Hampton roads but moved to Maryland 5 years ago . I came for the first time To this trail this year while on a trip visiting my mom. This trail is a gem I wish I had known about sooner. I also was blown away by the culture of this trail. So many people greet you while Passing by. It’s very humbling and refreshing. It’s a big difference from the many trails I frequent in the dmv. The “scenery was serene” and although flat surface was not the most challenging... a round trip jog/walk provides respective miles (7 miles)

Saunders-Monticello Trail

absolutely beautiful

July, 2020 by jjustine

The trail is great. Hard packed gravel or boardwalks take you from the parking area to the Monticello visitor center. There are 10 stunning wood boardwalks that take you along this tree lined path. It is a slight uphill all the way up - but then it’s a refreshing downhill back again. There are bathrooms and a small cafe at the Monticello visitor center as well.

South River Greenway Trail

paved trail perfect for short activities

July, 2020 by vabss

We have been on this trail too many times to count. Perfect for walking, jogging, scooting for kids, or a short bike ride. If you are biking, you can create a loop with the wide, lightly trafficked downtown roads of Waynesboro (we come back to the trail on Short street to avoid the main downtown road which is more narrow). There are benches, dog bag stations, and a newly installed bike repair station on this trail. I can’t wait until they finish the remaining phases and it is longer. Probably not worth a long drive (yet) but if you are in the area it is lovely. Stay in town and visit a brewery or local eatery downtown.
