Columbia Trail

Shade covers whole trail

May, 2017 by arthurl101

It's a wonderful easy trail, that's well maintained. It starts at the free day parking lot. The trail surface is flat that's topped with a thin layer of crushed gravel. The trail stayed dry even a day after a heavy rain. Trees cover both sides of the trail providing plenty of shade. There are just a few open views where farms are visible and most of the views are of the river with occasional access points.

Tyler State Park Trails

i love this park

May, 2017 by courtneejayne

there are so many little paved loop trails in this park. it has incredible views, a creek wandering through it, a disc golf course (if you like to throw frisbees while you hike!!) and plenty of trees to shade you on sunny & hot days or protect you from rain showers on cloudy days

Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail

Nice trail but best to stay out of Trenton

May, 2017 by rmillanct

The D&R trail that runs along the river is very nice, and it's very cool how it connects to the D&L on the other side of the Delaware River via bridges. We did both of these trails but one of the days we started on the NJ side parking off of US 1 South. We biked down to Trenton to connect with the trail that heads North on the river. Getting through Trenton was neither worth the hassle, nor potential safety issues riding through an urban area with little familiarity of the neighborhoods. Look up Trenton's crime rates and I think you will probably understand what I mean. We actually blew a flat downtown but luckily we didn't draw too much attention to us. There is plenty of biking on both of these trails, just skip going through this area, it's not worth the risk and you are not missing anything. We did not get to ride the other northern section of the V located on the NJ side but from what I gather it’s along highly populated areas, and highways. If you are looking for scenery and quite I think the river side is the best option.

Union Transportation Trail

kudos to a great new addition to NJ's RTT network

May, 2017 by jrutch

okay - here's the latest & greatest on the recently completed UTT Trail. We parked at the Herbert Road parking lot (which is the northernmost parking lot). We went south on the trail (go right) and rode traffic free for about 8.25 miles one way (16.5 round trip). All crushed gravel, all off road, all through farmland or woods. A few road crossings, only one we got off the tandem for. Port-a-johns at all the parking areas. One picnic table at the next to last parking area when heading south. A few of the crossings had the "push a button, slow down traffic, warning signals for the cars" - only used it for the busy 539 crossing. We saw one snake, some sheep and goats and a wandering little puppy. Saw other walkers and riders. This is a great antidote for people who believe NJ is only smokestacks and junkyards. We did not head north which supposedly goes another mile or so, but that section has been done for a few years, so I am presuming it too is traffic free.

I moved here because of the trail!

April, 2017 by agentamyroth

17 Years ago I moved to Hunterdon County because of this trail. I continue to enjoy it thru all the seasons. Walking or biking there is always some nature to delight be it flora or fauna. If you would like to live near the trail there is an open house in Califon 4/30 1-4pm. Today on my trail adventure I was able to take a photo of a fawn in the river and some turtles. This is a carry in carry out trail. Love your Earth! :)

Saddle River Area Bike Path - Bergen County

Best bike path there is.

April, 2017 by screwtapes

I love cycling here in the winter and off peak times. I ride here week nights because close to home. Pedestrians are clueless, make no effort to stay right walk dead center of the path and don't know how to move right when someone yells "on your left". On the weekends its an obstacle course of entitire families astrollers and dogs. Stay away

North County Trailway

Good ride

April, 2017 by sschwinn

I rode (using my cyclocross bike) this trail today end-to-end in conjunction with the Putnam Trail to make a 62+ mile out and back ride.
Overall the trail is in fairly good shape with somewhat tricky start/end points as noted in the previous review. As there is really no parking at the southern end I parked in a commuter lot just off the Saw Mill parkway about 2 miles from the south end and backtracked to complete the end-to-end.
While a road bike could be used for this trail I suggest a hybrid or cyclocross bike due to some tough pavement in spots and pretty heavy debris on the two on-road sections. The Putnam Trail is fine for a road bike.

Very well paved roads. But I found with little kids, the wind and narrow road became frustrating and much slower than expected.

Columbia Trail

Is This Really New Jersey?

March, 2017 by hal.snik

This has become one of my favorite trails to run in New Jersey. The trail is well-maintained, the crushed stone is dry (even after rain) and easy on the feet, there are mile posts every quarter mile, and the scenery is beautiful. There is a local coffeeshop in High Bridge and a great new coffeeshop (The Coffee Potter) on the trail in WShington Township.

D & L Trail - Delaware Canal Towpath

Calhoun Bridge (Trenton) to Frenchtown on the Pa side 65+/- miles round trip

March, 2017 by bouyboy62

Heading north the entire ride has such a slight grade that you're hard pressed to feel you're actually going up hill. The same goes for the return trip as you'll hardly feel as though you're going down hill.
The packed gravel surface is mostly fine grained so you don't feel as though your teeth are being rattled out of your head, just be wary of the grassy center in the double rack sections the gravel here isn't packed down and can get a little "hairy."
Just before you get into New Hope there are some great views of the river where the trail is bordered by the canal on your left and the river on your right.
For the most part you will be riding in the shade, but if it's hot there are stretches that are in the open sun, so make sure you pack enough hydration for the trip...The only negative is that you and your bike will look as though you've been through a red clay dust storm, so pack a towel and have a few gallons of H20 back at the car so you can wash down when you get back...
The ride north of New Hope is the most scenic as the trail meanders along sections of the river where you're going to want to stop for some really excellent photo-ops...
My wife and I ride identical Trek dual sport hybrids which have 700c x 38mm tires..which handled this ride perfectly...

South County Trailway

Great Trail for Cycling

February, 2017 by davidwehrle

Wonderful trail for biking. No hills. All gentle grades. Mostly up as you head north. Mostly down as you head south. It gets very bumpy in the last few miles at the north end. The vibration is serious and will numb your hands, feet and other parts. The rest is silky smooth. The Old Putnam trail at the south end is packed dirt. The north end doesn't connect smoothly to the north county trail. You have to ride some gnarly four lane highly trafficked roads to get to it.
