A few miles of the trail are plowed of snow

January, 2025 by vicki1960

The first few miles of the trail, as you enter the park, have been plowed and salted. It's down to the asphalt for miles but a few icy snowy spots here and there. The bay side of the lake is frozen over with ice fisherman out there. On the other side, facing Canada, there are ice dunes and the ice is frozen for as far as you can see from the shoreline. A beautiful state park to visit all 4-seasons.

Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail

Great trail

November, 2024 by mzkzps6zjk

I have hiked several sections of the trail. Parts are still ungroomed while others are packed stone. The Orchard Park strip has parking at the old train station and is packed stone for biking or hiking. Beyond Jewitt Holmwood the trail is the old rail bed and is a bit rough in spots but still a beautiful and easy hike.

Beautiful Fall Day-Oct 2024

October, 2024 by vicki1960

A mild and sunny day provided a great opportunity to ride the trail and take in the colors of fall! Temps near 70 with brilliant blue skies. The bike path has been recently repaved and is as smooth as silk. The main road within the park has also been repaved. Both, much needed. Thank you State of PA! Beautiful fall colors. The entire park, including the trail, has about 10 feet of elevation. So that makes for very flat, and easy riding.

Full Loop Trip - Ellicottville Brewing Mid Ride Stop

August, 2024 by norrisj15_tl

Be warned: The trail, in spots, is entirely unmaintained aside from some lawn mowing. It's as if you are riding through a grass field. In other areas, the trail is entirely dirt and if it were wet / rained recently would be entirely unusible. If you are on a road bike or bike with more road focused tires, you may have difficulties.
We had gravel bikes or mountain bikes so the trails surface was not an issue and we did the entire trail from the south starting point up and back, with no issue and averaged around 10mph during our ride with minimal effort. We even extended about a 1/3 a mile beyond the end until we ran out of bikeable path.

The trail is a shared use trail and great for walkers/runners/horses.
We only saw a handful of people on a Saturday when we were out.

Ellicottville Brewing has a location along the trail in Happy Valley which is 6 miles from either end, right in the middle of the trail.
A great stop for some food or beverages if you want to break up your ride.

Chautauqua Rails-to-Trails

Needs Improvement

August, 2024 by cff8v7nyxm

8/24/24 Arrived at trail head to discover the beginning is not well marked. Beginning of the trail is grass, crossed a field and then some ruts appeared. The trail is mowed and clear to the sides. Quickly arriving at a hard road it was an uphill of ruts and rocks. The trail ended at a hard road with no indication of the trail continuation. Speaking to a local we found traveling .9 mile to a stop sign and a right down a slope put us back on the trail, better described as a mountain bike trail. A farmer closed the trail section we traveled by highway. This could be a great trail with much attention to development.

Chautauqua Rails-to-Trails

3 star Cycling trail, 4 star hiking

August, 2024 by jfbryant0

I tried this trail out of Brocton and besides the poor marking of the trail (it is not continuous and requires some traversing on pavement to find the next entrance) it is just not well maintained for cyclists. This is an amazing hiking trail but just not great for gravel bikes or rigid bikes with wide tires. I would come back and do this on a hardtail. Honestly with how much you have to trudge through chunky gravel and grass an E bike would be the best choice. If you’re looking for a fun gravel ride up to Chautauqua, just ride the roads they’re much more enjoyable.

Oil Creek State Park Trail

July ride 2024

July, 2024 by twhiston11

Easy river view trail on all paved surface. Shaded most of the way by the trees. Beautiful views of the windy river and one bridge and railroad trestle and plenty of benches and rest stops in the 10 mile ride. Would have given this trail a 5 as most others did but the paved surface in many areas had roots of trees creating ridges and thus is quite bumpy in some areas. Especially in miles 6 to 7. Around mile marker 8 a bear with a couple cubs can be seen if you time it right according to the ranger. If I could give this a 4.5 I would. If the trail was resurfaced in the bumpy areas it would be a 5 with ease.

A beautiful State Park bike trail

June, 2024 by vicki1960

Presque Isle State Park is a beautiful park located in Erie PA at Lake Erie. Paved trail loop within the park. Some of the trail is share the road which isn't all that bad. The vehicle speed limit is 25mph and the park rangers and PSP do patrol it. At the Coast Guard station there is a lighthouse on the pier, which they are rehabbing the pier this summer. There is another lighthouse in the park, Presque Isle Light, which is open for visiting and climbing and staffed by volunteers, seasonal. The park also offers hiking trails and kayaking, as well as boating, beaches, fishing and picnic grounds. Many restrooms and parking lots along the trail. So much to see and do here and of course enjoy the paved bike path. We visited on a weekday due to sometimes the park is crowded on weekends. As always, PA state parks are free to enter.

Oil Creek State Park Trail

Great Spring Ride

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Warm and sunny Spring day parked in Petroleum Center next to the Park Office. Very well shaded. Biked to Titusville and back for a 25 mile round trip. While in Titusville also rode on Queen City Trail and rode through Drake Well park. The vehicle bridge in Petroleum Center has been closed at least 18 months and a new one isn't scheduled to be rebuilt until 2026. In the meantime, the bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists. And as always, our State Parks in Pennsylvania are free to visit.
