Zim Smith Trail

Nice relaxing trail

April, 2017 by addisson.provost

Great bike trail to chill and ride down on a nice day

Harlem Valley Rail Trail

Nice! As every trail should be.

April, 2017 by lughnerson

I travel far and wide to get to almost any bike trail, paved or not. This one is asphalt and pretty nice. Starting in Millerton near the refurbished rail station, I went south to Wassaic, end of the line where a noisy, fuel-smelling, working train station is the final stop. (I think there are bathrooms inside.) It is kind of a nice juxtaposition from the trail and village starting point. As described above, the rail trail goes through lovely rural county. A few root-bumps here and there, but nothing terrible. When the northern section has enough miles connected to make it worth my hour+ drive, I will give another review.

Millerton is a lovely village. If you like tea, check out Harney's tea shop, a small cafe, gift shop and tasting room.

Champlain Canalway Trail: Schuylerville

Hudson Crossing Park Worth Exploring

October, 2016 by wally.elton.3

North of Schuylerville, this trail passes by Champlain Canal Lock 5 and through Hudson Crossing Park, which has about 2 miles of other trails to explore. One leads north between the Champlain Canal and the Hudson River to Eagle Point, with a beautiful view of the dam and rapids below. Learn more at www.HudsonCrossingPark.org. It is worth noting, too, that once you cross the pedestrian bridge over the Hudson, back roads have been designated as the route of the Champlain Canalway Trail as far north as Fort Edward. Most of this route is signed. As of late 2016, this is the longest continuous stretch of the CCT open to the public.

Zim Smith Trail

Wish it was longer

October, 2016 by slipsoup

This is a great trail. The surface goes from paved to crusted stone. Both are equally smooth. It's easily ridden on a road bike. A journey on this trail makes for a nice fall foliage ride. Also, the quaint town of Round Lake is worth a stop.
We rode from the Oak St. parking area (on-street) in Ballston Spa. If you GPS 198 Oak St., it takes you right there.

Albany County Rail Trail

Mixed surfaces

October, 2016 by slipsoup

We started our ride at the South Pearl St. parking lot, which is a terminus of the trail. It is located right outside the "hood" in Albany. If you need water before your ride, there's a convenience store about a half mile north of the parking lot.
This is a nice ride, which skirts the river at first then passes through neighborhoods. There are only a few street crossings.
The trail is about half paved and half mixed surfaces. When the pavement ends, there's a short segment of large gravel rocks, which can be avoided by going on the adjacent road at the "No Thru Traffic" sign. It'd be wise to avoid this segment on a road bike. It then becomes a mixture of dirt and crushed gravel.
The scenery is nice and the leaves are now displaying their colors. It is a good connector between Albany and Voorheesville, where the trail ends at a large gazebo-like structure and wooden train to play on. This area appears to be in the process of completion.

Champlain Canalway Trail: Schuylerville

Hudson River bridge is open

October, 2016 by zoetoaster

If you are distance cycling as I do through Schuylerville, this trail is a welcome diversion from traffic. The 100 year old bridge across the Hudson has also been restored and is open for recreational use only, connecting the trail to the east side of the river.

Zim Smith Trail

Parking area at terminus on Oak St

October, 2016 by zoetoaster

Not sure if this has been mentioned in previous comments, but the trail was extended another couple of paved miles to the north to Oak Street in Ballston Spa. There is on street parking on this dead end lane.
There is also a two mile spur trail, signed, about midway which runs through the woods to US Route 9.
I concur with the many reviews I have read, the trail is well maintained and is fairly well shaded.

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

Nice easy 21.6 mile ride

September, 2016 by dbdev

This is a very well maintained, nicely paved trail. Only one road crossing that is questionable. We started at the north end at Adams. There is a slight incline for about 2 miles coming out of Adams, but it is easy enough. You ride through a nice wetlands area, then through open views of a lake/reservoir and the surrounding hills/ranges.

Currently 10.8 miles each way. It looks like they are working on adding more (not opened yet) north of Adams.

I drove to Kingston to start the trail there! It was an amazing ride! Mountain bike ride for sure, nothing is paved and there are cross roads but there scenery is awesome! The caves are excellent with the exceptional cold air needed on a ride on a very hot day! I road all the way to to the Gardiner end through New Paltz and back 42 miles to be exact! I can't say enough about this great ride. There are plenty of places to stop along the way for food and water! Just bring your own and enjoy the ride!

Catskill Scenic Trail

Great Potential

The scenery is 4.5 and the surface varies from 3.0 to 4.5.
This could be a destination trail if money were invested to improve the surface and put in better mileage signs. The local volunteers are trying hard but they could use some help. There are a number of road crossings but traffic is light.

Cooperstown NY is about an hour away and a great place to spend the night.

Zim Smith Trail

Beautifull Ride

Perfect day, with no negatives. Trail is not completely paved. But these areas are smoother (like glass)than a lot of paved roads. Would not attempt with a road bike tire of 23mm, if wet. No issues dry.

Wallkill Valley Rail Trail

Good ride

We took this from new paltz north to Kingston. A little rough and a little muddy, our hybrids were necessary. The best part - and quite amazing - was the cold cold air comng out of caves and chilling us on a 95 degree day! New Paltz is a great place to tool around as well, colonial district and great little downtown with a hippie vibe.
