Erie Canalway Trail

Long Trail with some issues along the road

February, 2018 by sanmartm

Last summer, a group of 10 friends did the trail from Buffalo to Albany. Before we started the trail in Buffalo, we ride our bikes to Niagara Falls in Canada. Great experience and wonderful ride, except for walking the bike over the border.
The "trail" between Buffalo and Albany has some gaps but in general is ok. There is a small section before Rochester where the trail is in horrible condition. The good thing is that there are good hotels in Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester (Marriott) so you can accomodate your trip to stay in a nice hotel after a long ride. There is only one stop where you have to sleep in a run-down motel, but, hey! No trip is perfect!

Ontario Pathways Rail Trail

A Pathway

September, 2017 by kshell

The Ontario Pathway is exactly that; a pathway. It is a wide grassy path with a narrow-worn bike path. I was not expecting such a primitive trail. It is a beautiful trail that is under a canopy of trees that travels through lush farms. On our ride, the weather was great but the trail could be a problem in wet weather.

The Ontario Pathway seems to be lost in time. I felt I should have been riding a balloon tire Schwinn instead of my hybrid. It was a great experience but a little more strenuous that we expected.

Ontario Pathways Rail Trail

Beauty for the eyes, torture on the nose

September, 2017 by ihammerhands

Ran from the trail intersection and Freshour Rd to Canadaigua YMCA. Beautiful tree canopy made sun protection unnecessary. This portion of the trail was about 50/50 wide enough to run on the path vs. in the grass.
About 3/4 had a taste in the mouth manure smell. Not sure time of year, wind direction or weather its a common occurrence.

Erie Canalway Trail

Not maintained

When biking from Utica to oriskany this trail hasn't been maintained at all.its to a point where I quit usuing this trail

Genesee Valley Greenway

Easy, quiet ride

July, 2017 by ethanpage

Rode from Jefferson Rd (252) to the Lehigh Valley trail. Nice and flat. Just south of Erie Station Rd there are a few huge trees that came down obstructing the trail that you have to kind of climb through (watch out for poison ivy). Otherwise a very nice ride.

Lake Ontario State Parkway Trail

Bike Path

It would be a nice trail if they would cut the tall weeds and remove the tree limes ready to fall onto the trail. This use to be well maintained until a few years ago.

Tonawanda Rails to Trails

Incorrect North-End Parking Address

July, 2017 by jasteele1969

The parking address listed on the Trail Link description is not correct. The actual parking area for this trail is located on State Street near the intersection of State and Young Streets - not on Francis Street.

That being said - I love this trail, I grew up very close to this rail line and I think this is a great use of it.

Ontario Pathways Rail Trail

Great trail!

June, 2017 by poof

Anne and I biked this rail trail today and loved it. We arrived in Canandaigua just as thunderstorms were moving through, so visited the Dalai Java coffeeshop on Main Street for some coffee and lunch. Very nice. After the rain ended, we rode for about 8 miles round trip. The beginning little bit along the active train tracks is just okay, but it fairly quickly leaves the tracks and enters an enchanted green tunnel. The shrubs and trees arch over the trail to provide shade and a feeling of isolation in nature. Unfortunately we had to turn around between Smith and Freshour Roads, due to a tree across the trail. It could be cut with a hand saw, but I did not have one.

Thanks to the folks who created and maintain this gem.

Erie Canalway Trail

Fairport to W Henrietta Rd Rochester

June, 2017 by ajw

We parked at Lock 32, and rode west to Henrietta Rd (we were going to Genesee Valley Park, but trail closed at Henrietta Rd for bridge construction). Then turned around and went east to Fairport. 26miles roundtrip. Trail is paved, flat, and in good condition for most of the way. Since it is along a canal, it is open with little shade. Tough on a windy day. There was a portapotty at Lock 32, but no other restrooms or water that we saw.
