Erie Canalway Trail

Long Trail with some issues along the road

February, 2018 by sanmartm

Last summer, a group of 10 friends did the trail from Buffalo to Albany. Before we started the trail in Buffalo, we ride our bikes to Niagara Falls in Canada. Great experience and wonderful ride, except for walking the bike over the border.
The "trail" between Buffalo and Albany has some gaps but in general is ok. There is a small section before Rochester where the trail is in horrible condition. The good thing is that there are good hotels in Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester (Marriott) so you can accomodate your trip to stay in a nice hotel after a long ride. There is only one stop where you have to sleep in a run-down motel, but, hey! No trip is perfect!

Genesee Valley Greenway

Easy, quiet ride

July, 2017 by ethanpage

Rode from Jefferson Rd (252) to the Lehigh Valley trail. Nice and flat. Just south of Erie Station Rd there are a few huge trees that came down obstructing the trail that you have to kind of climb through (watch out for poison ivy). Otherwise a very nice ride.

5 star trail; 3 star markings

July, 2017 by miroslavrakic

The trail is as described. Mostly grassy and crushed stone. It gets technical in a few spots with some Loose gravel or soggy spots. I rode 29 inch 2.1 width tires on my bike and it was pretty Much ideal. Any narrower of a tire and it probably would not have been enough. If you're an adventurous, experienced rider, you will love this trail. If you're looking for a pleasure cruise, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. If you're looking for fun and effort, The trail quality is definitely 5 star in my Mind. The markings could use a little help. I started in Sherman and rode end to end. I lost the trail several times due to lack of signage. I also accidentally and unintentionally trespassed onto an angry farmer's property. I give the trail markings three stars.

Incorrect North-End Parking Address

July, 2017 by jasteele1969

The parking address listed on the Trail Link description is not correct. The actual parking area for this trail is located on State Street near the intersection of State and Young Streets - not on Francis Street.

That being said - I love this trail, I grew up very close to this rail line and I think this is a great use of it.

Erie Canalway Trail

Fairport to W Henrietta Rd Rochester

June, 2017 by ajw

We parked at Lock 32, and rode west to Henrietta Rd (we were going to Genesee Valley Park, but trail closed at Henrietta Rd for bridge construction). Then turned around and went east to Fairport. 26miles roundtrip. Trail is paved, flat, and in good condition for most of the way. Since it is along a canal, it is open with little shade. Tough on a windy day. There was a portapotty at Lock 32, but no other restrooms or water that we saw.

Great Ride!

May, 2017 by ddmc13

Rode my mountain bike from a friend's place in Mayville to Sherman & back on 5.27.17 for a total of 25 miles. The trail was a little soggy from the rain the few days prior but overall not real bad. Pros: incredible scenery, lots of wildlife, easy trail to travel (with the appropriate bike). Cons: Could use better signage in a few spots. For example, when coming out of the path onto Hannum Rd. (like the signage at Titus that gives specific directions to make a right on Titus, then left on Kendrick, etc.), got a little confused where there was a split just before Lyons Rd. & was afraid I was taking the wrong trail through someone's back yard. Also, there's another trail off of Sunnydale that's right before the CHQ R-T. Not sure if it's part of the same system as it looks like it intersects CHQ R-T further on in the woods but I didn't explore, again, for fear I would be traveling on private property. Overall I had a great experience & will most likely ride it again. I recommend this path for anyone looking for a great ride through some beautiful country. I suggest taking a good look at the map first though.

Pat McGee Trail

Great Ride

May, 2017 by Bud Gearhart

Just rode the trail from south to north and back. Beautiful and widely diverse scenery. The trial was slow compared to asphalt or crushed stone, being mostly grass, hard-packed dirt, and some crushed stone. Mostly double-track but single-track in some places. The southern-most end was primarily mowed grass, but the further north we rode, the harder and smoother the trail surface became. There was a Porta-John at the ball field in Little Valley, which was nice, but otherwise no amenities. Met the Director of the Pat McGee Trail on his tractor. Was thrilled that we "came all the way from Rochester to ride his little trail."
