Sept. 27, 2025 / Incredibly wonderful temps inspired us to make the 1 1/4 hr. Drive to Sauk City for one of our favorite trails. We started at the southern end and rode the length to the trail head near Devils Lake State park. While the trail would really be enhanced if it would end within the state park, my wife and I find it a wonderful ride. Interesting mile markers, lots of areas with benches for rest stops, beautiful scenery along the way; and the trail has been always maintained to perfection.
We rode the trail from Eden to a couple of miles past Campbellsport on a beautiful late September day and thought it was one of the best we've ridden. The trail was very well maintained, and the surface was solid despite recent rain. Although it's described as level, we did notice some definite up- and downhill sections with our heavy old tandem. Another note: contrary to the TrailLink map, there is a very nice restroom in the Eden Community Park, which is helpful if you need to change back into street clothes after your ride.
We rode this stretch out and back on September 15, 2025. The trail is flat and in good shape except for the numerous bridges (10 or 12) which are in pretty bad shape. It’s obvious that a few repairs were recently attempted, but those amount to replacement of a few boards in each bridge. Some bridges are very long and all are super bumpy. If you have an older bike I’d suggest walking it across the longer bridges. Otherwise the scenery is nice and there’s great rest areas with flush toilets in LaValle, Wonewoc and Elroy.
The trail is mostly beautiful. Almost all crushed gravel, which we didn’t expect. In some parts the gravel is thick and loose. The only asphalt is on county roads. the concrete, as expected, was on sidewalks in town. The boardwalks were fun but be careful if you are riding on 3 wheels. If I hadn’t just rode the Heart of Vilas and the Root River State Trails, which are as close to perfect as you can get in this region, I would’ve given the Green Circle a 5 star review.
If your doing a there and back deal start in Sheboygan, do all the uphill stuff and then coast back lol. This trail is ok for scenery, prolly really shines in Fall, quite a bit of hills. It does run along the highway the whole time, connecting Fondy and Sheboygan. Plenty of parking along the way.. bathroom at the Greenbush one. Parts of the trail are shotty between Plymouth and Sheboygan. Trail has no tree coverage but random covered spots to sit. Bike shop in Sheboygan Falls.
Rode this trail end-to-end yesterday. The asphalt is in like-new condition and the scenery is beautiful. While we greatly prefer shaded trails in the hot summer, the lengthy stretches of sun on this trail were tolerable due to temps in the high 70’s and a light breeze. Can’t wait to ride this again in the fall. I’m sure the autumn colors near the northern half will be spectacular.
Trail is flat, mostly shaded, and well maintained. Bridge crossings often rough/bumpy due to repairs to damage from snowmobiles. (Thus 4 stars not 5)Legion Park in Wonewock is a great place to camp plus it is an interesting historic town.
Trail from Wittenberg to Birnamwood is grass covered crushed limestone. They do cut the grass, but not particularly bike friendly.
It’s a beautiful trail … well maintained! Quite a bit of shade for the most part we started In Fond du Lac off rolling meadows rd. Biked to the Horicon Marsh loop. I would recommend stopped at Katy’s Log Cabin in Oakfield for a good bloody and/or a great lunch !
Since the tornado in May 2025 there is two miles of trees down not far from Juneau. It is impassable. I rerouted from prospect onto Hwy 26 to Swan Rd.
Rode the trail the last couple days, loved it. It’s in great shape and is pretty flat. Happened to be there when the Wheelmen were riding with the high wheels!
