Columbia Trail

Great Experience

September, 2021 by aquinas1224

Some say the Delaware River Trail is the best in NJ. My vote is for Columbia Trail. The only negative is that it is a bit short at 15 miles. The trail is usually wide and well maintained, I've never seen it crowded, but I'm retired and use it during the week. The canopy of trees keeps it cool in the hot summer days of July and August and the turning leaves are spectacular in the fall. About 12 miles from High Bridge, in the town of Long Valley, is a great little coffee shop, the Coffee Potter, that sells pastries and really good coffee and teas. If that isn't enough, less than half a mile from the trail at the same intersection, you can ride to a group of three restaurants, a brew pub, a Latin restaurant, and and All American Cuisine restaurant. Beginning at High Bridge there is some minor elevation. I suggest starting there, so that coming back is easier.

Most of the trail is crushed stone, but there are sections of really hard dirt and some short stretches that might better be described as gravel, as well as a paved section - also very short. There are a few places intersections where a cyclist has to cross a road, but they aren't very busy. Still, caution is always recommended. I've ridden it with no problem with both a hybrid and a gravel bike, and that's what most riders use, but I've seen road bikes navigate the trail with no difficulties. A mountain bike would be fine, but isn't necessary.

Although this is an easy ride, if you're miles from your car and have a breakdown, it's still a problem. Bring the usual necessities in case of flat or other fixable breakdowns because of that distance. Watch for deer and other wildlife. I understand there are black bears, but I've never seen one. Bring the family. Enjoy.

202 Parkway Trail

Although the trail is noisy because of its proximity to Rt. 202, it is beautifully maintained, asphalt all the way and offers pleasant views. Very hilly headed south but fun downhills on the northward journey.

John Heinz Refuge Trail

wonderful resource

September, 2021 by jules251.business

Great trail system with lots of wonderful habitat especially for birds. Tried the west entrance off 420 and there is lots of construction going on. It could really use better signage at that end. Once I figured out where I was supposed to be it was a nice flat gravel route.

Little Lehigh Parkway Path

Too Loud

September, 2021 by docjedi

Scenery wise, the park is great and the grounds crew keeps it beautiful. The down fall is the sound. There is a shooting range on the park, so its a terrible place to walk a rescue dog. In other locations, its so close to the highway that all you here is traffic.

Chester Valley Trail

Nice Labor Day Ride

September, 2021 by sgraham127

Fun outing overall. Smooth asphalt trail and well maintained with lots of shaded areas. Agree some parts were not scenic and were near busy roadways but crossings were safe and clearly marked. Lots of bikers, walkers and families on this trail but majority were friendly as you passed. Even saw a group walking with a large American flag…a great bonus to our Labor Day ride!

Cross County Trail (PA)

Good concept but not here yet

September, 2021 by kws24

Only the westernmost 3 miles of this trail exist. The surface is good, but there are one or two nerve-wracking crossings. The summary here states, "You can also park in the lots owned by the big box stores found along the route." but I'm skeptical that parking in the strip-mall lot off chemical road is legal when you aren't on mall property. When completed this could potentially be a very useful trail, but is not there yet.

Schuylkill River Trail

Good trail with some significant irritations

September, 2021 by kws24

Overall a good trail but there are some irritations. The missing section between Lincoln Drive in Wissahickon and Lock Street in Manayunk is very annoying. You have a choice of dealing with the usually heavy traffic on Main street, or bumps, driveways, pedestrians and dogs on the sidewalk. This makes accessing Philadelphia from the north using this trail unsuitable, (or at least very intimidating) for novice/casual riders. Immediately north of that section there is a section on planks that will rattle your teeth loose, then there is a gravel/dirt section that tends to be muddy. This renders the trail undesirable as a commuting route. North of Shawmont Ave. it's good for a long stretch out to Oaks. Parking is not reliably available at Spring Mill or Conshohocken, which also makes the trail much less useful for commuting into Philly, especially on weekdays. The trail tends to get very heavy use, (increasingly so as one approaches Philly) and a considerable fraction of riders go faster than is appropriate.
