As mentioned there are a few sections with some cracks, but if you’ve ever ridden US275 shoulder in Nebraska, the cracks on the trail are all good. Yes some of them bump you but overall a truly great trail. Lots of sections with shade and even planting new trees to provide more shade in the coming years.
I rode the trail on Jul 27 from Nebraska City to Peru. I started at Lied Lodge, which is about 8 miles NW of the Arbor Station trailhead. It was a nice ride, those 8 miles across Nebraska City and out into the countryside. The trailhead is marked and easy to find. The first 6 miles or so of the trail are heavily wooded. Surface was fine, though there is more than a little forest debris to contend with. South of R Road the trail crosses planted fields to the town of Peru. Here the trail was more of a double track fire road than a crushed limestone trail, but I found it really enjoyable to ride. It was a very hot day so I didn't go past Peru. On the way back, I took gravel roads (mostly South 70th Road) and it was a real joyride. Hero gravel, fast and firm. Lots of climbing too. Nice vistas. I read some comments where people complained about the surface, but I found it enjoyable. You can ride the section I rode on a gravel bike with 40 mm tires, but after reading those reviews I opted for my Surly Grappler with 2.6" Vittoria Mezcals and they ate it up. I'm not disappointed with my choice. If you go, you'll have a lot more fun if you have realistic expectations. The trail doesn't get as much love as some do, but that's not necessarily a bad thing provided you are on the right kind of bike and looking for that kind of adventure. I give it 5 stars, because I had a really good time cycling here.
We rode the trail from the trail head on the far South End (Pymosa) to Audubon and back.
Highlights: Very Flat, the old trestle midway where the trail diverted was very cool to see. Nice stretch around Exira.
For awareness: The Asphalt is very cracked in a majority of the trail. You can see efforts to repair and smooth it out but still some 2-3 inch cracks for most of the trail.
We enjoyed the trail, the small towns and drove over to Elk Horn for the Dambo troll after riding as a bonus.
Discovered this comfortable place with great accommodations for two bike travelers. They offer a pullout sofa if you do not wish to share a bed. Indoor bike storage with a comfy bed and a hot shower! Distillery right next-door and two restaurants to fuel up in the morning to get back on the trail. Close to the panhandle of West Virginia. Their name is Harmony Trail Haven on Airbnb.
8’ wide concrete trail over 6 miles long. Parking lots available along the trail with multiple picnic spots. Awesome trail for many uses close to the heart of Omaha!
Highly recommend this beautiful and well kept trail. Beautiful to ride along the trees and over the 2 epic ohiopyle bridges.
We left from Brownsville on our recumbent trikes. About 1/2 mile in, ran into a good wash out that we had to carry trikes across. This was not a surprise due to serious storms and rain a couple of days ago. There were a few smaller washout spots. At about 6,5 miles out, we ran into a bunch of trees that had been cleared off the trail. Thank you to all that are taking care of this trail. At about 7.5 miles we had to turn around due to a huge tree across the trail from our last storm. This was a great trail with great scenery. We definitely will be riding it more this year. Still need to check out the portion north of Peru also.
Great views clean paths and wide space for bikes
Photo shown is not from this trail. It has well maintained concrete paving and is a pleasant ride. Hormel park is beautiful to ride through and has abundant wildlife. There are also unpaved trails in the park that would be easily biked, but for occasional downed trees. View of the Platte River in one spot, no significant fishing access or picnic area. Beautiful, easy ride from Fremont Lakes SRA.
The Keystone Trail is now open from Democracy Park to Lake Cunningham.It does cross several roadways, but should not be a problem with Hawk Lights and traffic signals.
