This trail is in three parts. I have not done the western portion that is on the old Columbia River Hwy. The center portion between Wyeth and Viento State Park where we camped. Be warned, train right next to the campground running throughout the night. This section of the paths has stunning views but does parallel the hwy at many points throughout. Still worth the ride, enjoy the quiet when the trail meanders back into the woods. Trail shows that it starts at Viento but it has been extended 1.2 miles further East. Riding from Viento West you will encounter several waterfalls and stunning views. The furthest East portion between Hood River and Mousier is quiet and peaceful. Signs of recent fire but nothing bad. Enjoy! Loralee
Beautiful Day, beautiful trail. The second section now goes 1.5 miles past the Viento Creek campground and ranger station.
On a beautiful mid-May day I set off with a group of four experienced road cyclist but gravel newbies all around age 60. Two of us were riding Pedigo Avenue electrics and two traditional borrowed mountain bikes. The trail alternates between smooth gravel/grass to large rocks, ruts, mud, gates and kind of a hiking trail feel. We made it to Klickitat for lunch but the traditional cyclist were tired and wanted to turn back.
The trail is much rougher than typical rail-to-trails I've been on (Crown Zellerbach, Banks-Vernonia, Olympic Discovery), but I loved the challenge, getting rattled, dealing with cows and poop, but especially the beautiful river views. Can't wait to go back and do the whole trail.
The ride from Hood river to Mosier is fabulous. The ride from Viento State park to Wyeth not as good because of proximity to I-84. Both feature impeccable road surface including 2019 constructed stretches of new road. But the Mosier leg is so special in terms of elevation and views Only 10 miles round trip there’s coffee in Mosier 1 mile past the end of the trail section. I’d you brave the surface streets you can make an60+ mile ride they say
I started at the Marina going West. Nice and flat at start with nice views of Marina. The Park further East would probably been nice but limited on time. Trail heads through industrial area but still nice cows of the Columbia River. Last part of trail is all uphill and head wind picked up. No problem with e-bike! Total 6 miles from marina.
This is a pleasant forested section, but it’s only about 2.5 miles one way from the parking in Cascade Locks to a very steep set of stairs that impedes access to the rest of the trail. If you had two people you could transport each bike up the stairs to continue the ride. I didn’t have anyone to help me and my bike is very heavy so I turned around. A note about parking: Park under the bridge in Cascade Locks, but don’t take the steep downhill road that leads you down to the railroad tracks. If you do turn around and go back to the parking lot. The trail start almost on the shoulder of the highway and then veers off into a peaceful wooded area
The trail and parking was open as of June 1, 2020 during Phase 2 of the Covid-19 situation. We rented bikes at Discover Bicycles in Hood River to ride the Historic Hwy bike path. We had a bike rack with us and we were staying in Mosier so we road the section from Mosier to Hood River (5 miles one way). This is an outstanding ride! Riding from Mosier to Hood River The trail is either uphill or level. Enjoy a picnic lunch and restrooms (flush toilets) and water at the Hood River parking lot. Riding to Mosier the trail is mostly downhill or level. Currently this is the best section of the trail to ride.
Started the trail in Mosier and rode in the direction of Hoodriver. This way it was mostly uphill or flat. Great picnic spot at the Hoodriver trailhead parking lot. Return trip was flat or mostly downhill for a fun way to end the ride. 11.4 miles round trip from condo in Mosier. Slightly shorter if starting from trail head parking lot ($5 day fee).
I did this ride on a Wed afternoon in June during the Covid lockdown. The Discovery Center was closed (free parking). There were some old homestead cabins on display that you can walk around on the center grounds. From the Discovery Center start riding on the trail and get a very fun downhill for several miles all the way to the Bargeway Pub which had just opened (June 3, 2020) to allow patio seating. This is a good stop to enjoy food or beverage. The trail continues on, but the view is more industrial, so you could just turn around and return to the Discovery Center Parking lot (free parking). It’s a bit challenging riding uphill on the way back and the headwinds are very strong in the afternoon making it even harder, but it is doable. If you want a longer ride, just continue on all the way to the marina and river front park. The full distance out and back is 12.8 miles and it took me 1:53 in riding time and I’m very slow riding uphill.
Rode this trail to the Dalles Marina, (approx 6miles) on a lovely sunny Friday during the covid scare. There was a few walkers and bikers but definitely not crowded. It was a nice leisurely ride.
The Whistle Pink Trail is an interpretive walk through the woods, beside old pieces of logging equipment. There are signs to explain the role of the equipment and the role of the “whistle punk”. Easy walk with children, loops back to the parking lot. There you will find picnic tables and toilets. Nice way to spend an afternoon.
