High Bridge Trail State Park

Well Maintained

August, 2021 by danaprn

We took our e-bikes last week (Aug ‘21) and it wasn’t crowded at all. Rode from Farmville over the bridge and to one end. It ends quite abruptly. I would have given 5 stars if the amenities on the trail spurs would have been identified on signs. We will definitely return to bike the other half and back (30 miles). Great free parking, too!

Virginia Capital Trail

Outstanding trail. My wife dropped me off in Richmond and meant me in Jamestown. Rode it on June 12th 2021. It wasn't crowded at all and the only thing I would say is the trail isn't wide enough.

High Bridge Adventure

June, 2021 by sandymo

We took our tandem 29er out and back both ways from Farmville. As others have said, the main attraction is the High Bridge, and its great. The trail is very well maintained and has plenty of bathrooms along the way...but as others have said, not a lot of places to get water. Make sure you have plenty, especially on these 90° days. Much of the trail is shaded so that’s a plus. Except for the bridge, it’s probably not a destination trail yet as there’s not much in the way of places to stop along the trail. Still, it’s a great place to get some miles. Some have mentioned the crowds but we saw none of that on a Sunday.

First Ride

Excellent trail and well maintained park. I just rode two hours on a lovely Saturday and counted only a dozen other riders. Highly recommend this easy ride if five miles for new bikers as the flat and wide trail was an easy way to get started.

Virginia Capital Trail

Nice trail, but facilities are limited

April, 2021 by dcsnyder

Nicely paved trail, mostly flat from Jamestown to Charles City except the bridge over a river. Rolling hills as you go towards Richmond. We did a two day ride from Jamestown to Richmond, then the next day back. Richmond along the river is beautiful. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Downtown, just a few blocks from the start of the trail.
The only reason for four stars as facilities, like rest rooms and shelter are very minimal. Some trailheads that have rest rooms, could be a mile off the trail.

Great Shiplock Park out & back

April, 2021 by sandymo

Great 40 mile ride on the trail today. Not much parking at the park, but found ParkMobile parking a few blocks away in Shockoe Bottom. There’s a few more minor hills at this end, but we picked up less than 1,000ft of climbing in the 40 miles and nothing was over 6%. It’s not a big deal for anything with gears, but certainly not for a beach cruiser or an old 3speed. The scenery was great and the trail wasn’t crowded during the week. We grabbed dinner at Hot Chicks and would recommend the Nashville style Hot Chichen. The trail is awesome and well maintained. I especially liked the mile posts each mile and the many historical plaques.

Tobacco Heritage Trail

Tobacco Heritage Roundtrip

April, 2021 by sweigand_tl

I roundtripped this trail in April ‘21 on a hybrid mountain bike. 35.5 miles, 3:40 time, 9.6mph average speed. The trail was well maintained - grass was cut, large fallen trees were removed, garbage containers were emptied, trail parking is plentiful at the several trailheads. The first few miles out of LaCrosse were paved, the rest is crushed gravel, softer sand, and dirt/grass. I saw only 2 other bikers all day (they were on e-bikes). There definitely is not a lot of use on the trail, there are no tunnels or really long trestles or bridges, and there is not much in terms of trailside amenities that I could tell (restaurants, bed and breakfasts, stores), but if you’re looking for a nice long ride in the woods with nobody else around, this is the trail for you. If it gets connected into a larger/longer trail system, and if that spurs some economic development along the way in terms of businesses catering to bikers and tourists, this current trail could be a great foundation for a future longer trail that could be a bucket-list type of ride.

Newport News Park Bikeway

Doesn’t get much better

April, 2021 by gcc3

We’re full-time RVers staying at the Newport News Park Campsites for a few nights. What a pleasant surprise to find this awesome and easily accessible trail near our campsite. Once we got on the trail so glad we turned off at the George Washington Headquarters sign. We then enjoyed a “Historic Tour” of the Colonial National Historic Park (NPS). Easy, flat loop.

This bike loop is perfect for a morning workout through the picturesque woods. We typically ride the loop twice to extend it.

Virginia Capital Trail

You know you want to ride it!

December, 2020 by tom.morgan.100

A wonderful 50 mile, paved, off road bike trail between Jamestown (first capital) and Richmond (current capital), Virginia! We did a video of our ride this fall that is on our YouTube channel, Bent on Bike Trails.
