Longleaf Trace

beautiful rural trail

November, 2023 by patty58050

This trail is awesomely maintained with beautiful rural America scenery. We rode from Hattiesburg to Prentiss and all the restrooms and water stations were open and clean. A must do rail trail, what a wonderful trail and a real asset to the communities it goes through.

Tanglefoot Trail

Fun trail

October, 2023 by ltbike

The trail is really great. Very good surface and signage is good for trailheads. It is mostly in the woods and very shady. We were there in early October and had some very chilly, windy days. We encountered dogs running loose at a rural house near Houston—they chased some other bikers and we happened to be stopped so we threw rocks at them (the dogs) so they would go off the trail. Another dog was running loose with some walkers at New Houlka and was growling at us but according to the owner “won’t bite you!!” One loose dog encounter was between Potontoc and Algoma. They were all nothing we couldn’t handle—just something to be prepared for. Don’t let this stop you because this trail is great and some nice little towns along the way. We did encounter a number of other trail users off and on. We were camped at Potontoc. Be sure to eat at Seafood Junction at Algoma, MS

Longleaf Trace

Shaded almost whole distance

October, 2023 by ltbike

The trail is very well-maintained and a good asphalt surface. Repaving just done from Hattiesburg and north. That part of the trail is lovely and scenic. We found the rest of it rather boring. No scenery other than trees and brush. Lots of shade. We rode by some rather sketchy places and there were some dogs running loose barking at us. All the trailhead restrooms are locked up in the northern 2/3 of trail. The towns are very small. The addresses on the trail website are not exact, but close by—just follow the brown signs. We were camped at Lake Jeff Davis at Prentiss.

Bonita Reservoir Trail

Beautiful flat easy trail

October, 2023 by runnerbek

This trail is beautiful and flat. It’s in a park where there are hills and other off road trails. The off road trails are well marked and wide. (About 5 miles) Once in the park, there is more parking if you drive up the road. The reservoir trail has a sign saying. NO DOGS NO BIKES. The rest of the park allows leashed dogs and bikes. Highly recommend this park for a variety of beautiful outdoor trails!

2nd Trip Tanglefoot

September, 2023 by garybrogers

Well on September 15th we returned to Tanglefoot trail, this time we started out in Pontotoc and we rode our Catrike to New Albany, took about a 30 minute break, then headed back south on the trail, stop in Ecru an ate lunch at Zuby’s Cafe, Great Catfish!! Then we were headed to the Pontotoc/ Chickasaw county line, then turned around an headed back to Pontotoc. This is a Great Trail!!! Some of bridges are getting a little rough an will need some repairs in the near future, and there was a few rough spots in the trail south of Pontotoc, All restrooms were clean, most of the trail is patrolled by security during the daytime

We recently purchased two trikes, wife and I made our first adventure on Tanglefoot, rode from Houston to the county line just north of New Houlka, an back, about a 25 mile round trip. Was a Great experience, looking forward to more trips on Tanglefoot

Tanglefoot Trail

My grandson and I did the South 15 miles of this trail today. Highly recommend anybody. The wife and I did the middle part of this trail a couple weeks ago. Lots of food trucks in Pontotoc.

Longleaf Trace

Nice Ride!

June, 2023 by swgross

23 June 2023 - Sumrall to Carson Overall, this is a lovely place to ride. The trail is mostly covered with shade and offers scenic views of the Mississippi countryside. We enjoyed a serene ride with almost no traffic along the way. The trail is asphalt that is in fairly good repair. However, roots have bulged the trail in a few places and create rather large bumps. These are easy to dodge but are not well marked. There are bathroom stops at all the little towns but the Bassfield and Carson rest rooms were locked (this would have been a 5-star review otherwise). .

Longleaf Trace - 2 JUN 23

June, 2023 by 7s5a692x35

The Longleaf Trace is in the process in the near term to be paved in certain areas. See photos of a flyer stating to follow the Longleaf Trace’s Facebook page. Here is the latest posting:

Due to some weather delays on current projects the contractor was unable to start as we had hoped. A new project date has not been confirmed at this time. Sorry for any inconvenience and again we appreciate your understanding and patience throughout this process. We are excited to soon start repaving the Longleaf Trace from Hattiesburg to near Apostolic Road past the Sumrall Station. The repaving will be done in sections and we will update closures here on our Facebook page. On May 15th the trail will be CLOSED at the Hattiesburg Gateway to the 59 Overpass for repaving. Thank you all in advance for your patience during this process!

The trail is tree canopied for 98% of the trail as we started in Prentiss and finished up in Hattiesburg at the Southern Prohibition Brewing Co. Due to the tree cover causing shadows it was hard to see the rough trail conditions caused by tree roots causing asphalt heave even as they were marked by bright colored paint but the paint had faded over time. You need to stay focused on the trail versus sightseeing along the way.

There plenty of rest stops on the trail to include “rain stops” with overhead cover when you experience inclement weather while on the trail. The rain stops seemed to be located near the populated areas.

Mileage was marked with a mile maker every mile which is helpful if not using GPS.

Once they pave the areas needing attention, this will regain a 5 star status this Hall of Fame trail deserves again

The Tanglefoot Trail (T2) on 1 JUN 23

June, 2023 by 7s5a692x35

3 of us rode from New Albany to Houston and enjoyed the experience as the trail surface was smooth and there was a tree canopy for the majority of the trail. The bridge surfaces were not smooth due to the wooden planks being weathered and raised up. ~5 miles from Houston, there was a bridge that was resurfaced with concrete and chip-n-seal and was extremely rough.

There quite a few people on the trail especially near the populated areas but they were kind and moved to one side. In Houston, there is a restaurant called the Gathering and a very, nice lodging opportunity at the end of the trail named Trailhead bike and bed.

Go experience the Hall of Fame T2!

Longleaf Trace

Great Trail

May, 2023 by eguydjr

We road round trip from Jackson Station 2x. First to Eply & 2 weeks later to Sumral.
Enjoyed every Minute. There are a few rough patches, in broad day light easy to see, but second ride was late evening & shadows were low, not enough to cause a problem but a surprise.
Over all, Ill do it again next time I come this way.
