Tale of Two Trails

August, 2022 by bikin-mike

Tale of 2 trails….maybe 3

All the glowing reviews are for the Parklands of Floyds Fork. Look out when you go downtown!!!

5 stars for Floyds but 2 stars for downtown.

We parked at Turkey Run Park on Seatonville Rd. Turned out to be almost perfect midpoint. Rode 10 miles North to end at Miles Garden. All concrete except for the section North of Taylorsville Rd. Relatively flat except for the tough long climb North of Taylorsville and then at the very end approaching Miles Garden.

In the afternoon we parked at the South end at Broad Run Park. Rode about 10 miles North to Turkey Run. Much different experience. Same great trail surface, but many more hills. I think we had 3 steep climbs. I got off and pushed on a couple. Windy downhills were fun though. Amazing that this beautiful park is not tax supported. A real gem indeed!

Downtown is a different story. Parked at Big Four and headed West. Pretty nice for first couple miles. Started seeing some homeless tents under I-64 past the Science Center parking around 9th Street. Had some folks riding go carts and scooters on the trail and wouldn’t move over for bicycles. The real “fun” started after the railroad underpass where trail turns right. Down a sidewalk with some flood level markers in the pavement, then a couple sharp turns into a wooded park. Pavement ends. All dirt and mud. Abandoned cars. We finally turned around when we got to a bridge with mud halfway up to the railings. (see pic) Do yourself a favor. Turnaround when you see the sign at Portland Wharf Park that says Loop Alt Route. (see pic) Was about 4.2 miles from Big Four to Portland Wharf.

Enjoyed the wide diversity of the 3 rides. Definitely a big change from a typical flat and straight Rail-Trail…..bikin-Mike….Aug 2022

Fun Trail

July, 2022 by gracarte

I am new to biking, and do not want to ride on the roads. This has been a fun trail to ride on and get back into biking. The ride isn't too challenging, but there are some small incline areas. But that really isn't my point anyway. I want to get out, be active, and enjoy my time. Happy to have found this trail.

Late May 2022 storms caused Spider Creek to overflow its banks and cause severe erosion in several places between bridges 1 and 5. This has all been repaired and the trail is in good condition.

May 29 out and back ride

June, 2022 by ljdeloha

A friend and I started at Wilson Park and used the access trail to get on the rail trail. Almost immediately we encountered severe flood damage to the trail. This lasted for probably at least 1/3 of a mile. Later we encountered minor flood damage but much less of a problem. I assume this was a recent event since the trail was in perfect condition when I ride it last fall. Despite the flood damage, this is a very pleasant ride. It was interesting to see the dam with the river so full. We stopped along the trail a few times to enjoy the river views, stack rock and the high walled canyons created when the rail bed was built. A very enjoyable trail

Good Rural Southern Indiana Route

Rode from Wilson Park in Bedford to Williams Dam and back. Actually parked next to the Boys and Girls club as the spur trail is very close, nicer starting point as mentioned in a previous review. There was minor trail damage to the trailbed southwest of Coxton road, just don’t want to hit the ruts going too fast. Totally clear of trees when I was there.

My wife and two boys rode out from Williams 7.25 miles toward Bedford. Very scenic and peaceful ride with the White river. A 14.5 ride total.

A great trail that offers everything for the cyclist. Rolling hills, switchbacks, bridges over water & ravines, pallisades + lots of maintained trail heads.

Alternate Parking...

February, 2022 by jayro47421

I've seen and heard many ppl complain about the parking area near L and John Williams Blvd (official trail head) Don't do this bc this parking is a run down area! That first couple miles is awful anyway. It's in an industrial area. And there's better parking at WILSON PARK. Free parking, restrooms, picnic area, rec area. Ya know, a small city park. Google it. You'll find a primitive dirt trail that zig zags a hill. Some of it's steep so be warned if you have mobility issues. This spur-trail is less than a quarter mile long. At the T with the main trail, head left to the westXsouthwest.

Also note, check ahead about the water fountain and restrooms; they were locked up due to covid in autumn of 2021 - hopefully that's not the case now. However, the parking and access are 24 hours with free parking. It's a much better trail head/spur/base. You'll like better, I promise. You'll only miss the most boring parts and awful view to the north east. Happy Trails!!

Rode out & back from Fisherville Paddling Access, through Pope Lick Park, to Seatonville Road. Excellent facilities and great trail surface. What more could you ask for?
