I walked this trail yesterday, and it was one of the most magical experiences. I brought my dog along, and he was able to cool off with a dip in the water when he started to get too hot. I highly recommend this trail to anyone looking for a peaceful, paved, path shaded by trees, with beautiful views of the water.
If you park at the Sandy Creek Nature center, you can ride this trail and then join the Firefly Trail, which has the new bridge in place, and ride all the way to Winterville. The Firefly portion of the trail passes a convenience/gas store if you need water/food/bathroom. At that juncture you can also turn right, cross Lexington Road and continue on a trail into UGA, or towards East Athens on the other fork. This you can get a good 2-3 hr ride using all spurs.
Pleasant trail through wooded marshlands, but the southern end (from about 3 mi. north of Fowler Park south) is largely boardwalk, which a bit dicey for thin-tired road bikes. Also, as of 10/2024 a bridge was closed at about 3.5 miles north of Fowler Park.
Enjoyed a great ride on the trail with friends. We parked at Sandy Creek Nature Center and road all the way till it ended at Carriage Lane. It’s completely paved, it was our 1st trip so we did get a little confused but had no problems navigating back to where we started. We ended up with 14+ miles round trip which made for a great ride. Lots of other cyclists, walkers, and runners. But not crowded on the day we went during the week. Highly recommend
We’re from Charlotte, we have a trail similar to Big Creek (Sugar Creek), not nearly as long…we really enjoyed our ride and look forward to coming back.
What a pleasant surprise to ride this trail. It was my last day in Georgia and wanted to ride one more time before heading back north. It was an extremely hot day, being on mostly a tree covered trail, it was quite comfortable.
Graveled roads as well as paved. Reminded me of the creeper as well as Chattanooga greenway combined. I would recommend this greenway …absolutely gorgeous!! Wish it could be longer. We rode 11 miles, but it’s so beautiful, you could ride it twice.
Shaded walk. Older walking trail with bikers, runners, walkers, squirrels and deer along the path. Good first walking path for us in Gwinnett County.
9 miles out and back. If you do the circle at the end, you can get to 10. Mostly paved with some gravel/dirt sections. But beware! Several areas where it looks like it might be easier but you end up in a parking lot or dead end and have to go back.
mellow, beautifully paved and short trail perfect after a long drive on winding roads. Good place to watch the ww rafters start their adventure. Next time, we plan to join!
