Well-maintained paved trail with gravel parking lot at trail head. Trail head is on Central street on west edge of Rosedale. I only wish this trail was longer!
We rode this yesterday for the first time. Beautiful...lots of shade, nice scenery, well maintained. It is now almost completed to 6 miles, so you can make a good 12 mile ride. They have almost completed the two segments. We walked our biked across the road that divided the two halves, over some gravel, but just a very short distance. The only down side is that there are no restrooms, only 2 benches for a rest stop in Brownsburg, and the parking at the trail head in Brownsburg only accommodates a few cars. But it was a beautiful experience...so many trees, quiet, not too crowded, you cross over a small river and creek. Overall a very good ride.
First of all at the present time September 4, 2017, route 18 from I-65 toward Delphi is closed. Our GPS kept trying to take us that way, and no matter what side street we tried when we came back to route 18 it was closed. So find an alternate route, before you head out. When we got into Delphi we went to Canal Park. There are some gravels paths that run along both sides of the canal. When we took a trail into town, there was absolutely no signage telling us where to find another bike trail, path, route or anything. We only managed to clock around 4 miles altogether. And about two miles of that was on the streets of Delphi. There are some nice historical houses and building to see along the way, so that was one positive thing. We were looking for a nice continuous trail, and that is not what we found here. We went into Lafayette instead.
couldn't get to the trail head in thorntown the road was closed. So we got on off pearl st and franklin south of SR 47. the trail to start was paved. As soon as we got out of thorntown, the pavement was a little rough. As we headed south east it varied from a little rough to some lose gravel. The lose gravel ended about a 1/2 mile north of Hazelrigg rd. 300 n. it was new smooth pavement. We rode south about another mile and turned around. We ran across another rider who said the new pavement goes for a way the it was back to what was north of Hazelrigg. ( not as rough) He said when you get nearer to Lebanon it goes back to smooth pavement. We are working up the 20 mile round trip Thorntown to Lebanon. We did half today ( hazelrigg). (10 miles) We are both in our 60's and having ridden much over the past 15 years.
What a beautiful trail! Newly paved from Amo for a few miles before hitting the gravel path. We did the full 16 and was hoping there would be a restaurant to stop at once we hit Coatsville but there was nothing convenient at the end of the trail. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. Beautiful scenery. We saw butterflies and hummingbirds throughout most of the trail. Very peaceful.
I rode from downtown Indy to Westfield. There were water stations and bathrooms all along the trail and a lot of shade on the trail from all the trees next too the trail.
I wanted to say east side is best
grandson and I ride it often, little creek park is a good place for a picnic break. rose hulman is like a post card. access to cemetery for some hills and history, access to hawthorn park adds some miles. go west is best.
I only give it three stars for a variety of reasons even though portions of the trail are beautiful to ride on. We ride this trail frequently as part of our commute to work in downtown Indianapolis. The north section of trail between Skiles Test Park and 56th Street/Emerson is very nice. It has fairly new asphalt, sits up out of the flood plain, and is wide enough to provide for safe passing of pedestrians. The southern section of the trail from approximately Fall Creek Pkwy and Allisonville Rd to Fall Creek Pkwy and Central Ave is also in good shape but you have to cross the river via the 38th St Bridge (on the busy road or on the pot hole/light pole filled sidewalk). The trail currently dead-ends at Central Avenue due to road and bridge work. The portion of trail between 56th/Emerson and Allisonville/Fall Creek needs a major upgrade. It is narrow, bumpy, curvy, and floods or holds water when it rains. Because it is within the flood plain, silt tends to collect which makes for slick going after a rain event. Once this section is upgraded and they finish the 38th St Bridge crossing it will be a very nice trail to the near northeast side. It will be even better if they ever continue it all the way downtown.
I rode and my daughter ran the Cultural Trail in September 2016. It is mainly a large square around the downtown area with a few branches which in some cases connect with other trails (the Monon and Pleasant Creek Trails). We found the trail to be very well marked and easy to follow with many opportunities for stopping at a cultural venue or a quick bite to eat or to relax at an outdoor park. A highlight of the trail is the portion that dips below street level along The Canal and connects with the White River Wapahani Trail which goes by the Indianapolis Zoo. The trail is easy to negotiate and quite flat. That said, this is not the trail for a training ride as there are many streets to cross and the trail is shared in some places with walkers occasionally making for crowded conditions. It is a trail very well-suited for a leisurely ride with easy access and parking, and definitely rates very highly among urban trails.
This is one great trail! My favorite so far in Indy. Lots of water, bathrooms, people, scenery. I run it every chance I get when I'm in Indy. I live in Lake County and our trails suck compared to the Monon!
I have walked this trail many times just for the exercise. It is well kept, paved and level. Kokomo has done a lot for the trail system and I, as a senior resident appreciate it very much.
The trail intersects with the Walk Of Excellence trail which runs east and west and if you choose to do them both it will total more than eleven miles.
The IHT runs N. & S. and if you go the full length is almost three miles long. It goes past several of Kokomo's former industries, not many of which survived progress but it is still worthwhile to explore. And don't miss the downtown section with its new businesses and bricked paved walkways. Take a few minutes downtown to explore all the changes.
Please keep the trail clean and report all instances of vandalism which are many.
