My wife and I ride this trail a lot. (age 63 and 65)we have one here in Crawfordsville but it is too short.
We have ridden the whole trail Thorntown to Lebanon and back 3 times in the last month. The sections around the cities and Hazelrigg are smooth. the rest is bumpy. Lebanon has filed for a grant from the state and wants to take over pave and maintain the trail from Lebanon to Surem Plant rd (Thorntown). (We started a bike riding group from church we wanted to introduce others to the trail and bike riding.)
Going north out of Thorntown the trail is 8/10 of a mile and then ends at Sugar Creek. I saw where Colfax got some grant money to connect to the trail south, we will see how long that takes. I'd give it a 5 star rate if it was paved smooth.
Started from the trail head at Miller Athletic Complex; plenty of parking. Before I knew it I was at the end of the trail on Roy St. so I just rode the country roads south. Was peaceful as traffic was very light. They have several mountain bike trails which you can get to from Heritage so maybe one day I'll go back for that. Looks like Warsaw is like most cities with several trails. Be nice if they were connected.
Rode a quick 26 miler out n back from Richmond. Well kept and well marked trail.
This is a nice railtrail mostly through farm lands in the country land of Indiana! Make sure to pack lots of water as someone else said. We took water and still didn’t have enough! Thankfully we came upon one of the trailheads that had water. My husband was not happy with the water quality though ¿¿
I rode 8 miles on this trail on a Saturday with my boyfriend and our 12 year old. We parked at the pool in Forest Park (they let us use the restrooms without question). We rode east then north first until that section ends at the river. And I do mean at the river. Break check - don't ride in! By far the nicest section. Almost total shade on the north/south section. Nice to be along the river. The trail is not very wide and is VERY winding. Most people we encountered were walking and didn't seem to be used to coming across bicycles so stay alert. We then went south through Forest Park. Very nicely landscaped. It connects to the Noblesville Riverwalk (or something like that) just south of the park and across the river. We were excited to explore that upon coming across it, but a minute in encountered a complete closure for construction so that was disappointing. We then went back though the park and took the spur that goes northwest out of the park. Nice trail, but once it turned into riding along a regular street in direct sun on a very hot day we turned around. Overall, decent trail. Too bad it's not a lot longer.
On July 30 I rode from Richmond to Economy return. It was a glorious ride! Loved it! Safe and shady most of the way. However, beware the Oak Mites! The next morning I woke up with welts all over my forehead, neck and shoulders. I had even showered immediately after my ride but I had a severe allergic reaction. I am not from this region and had never heard of these critters that can flourish in July and August especially in years when locusts also flourish. But the trail is so great I would do it again but take more precautions.
Trail is connected to the Sweetser Switch trail. Very smooth and well maintained. A jewel for Grant county. Mostly flat with a few short inclines at old railroad bridges that have been removed.
I have done about 75 trails in 28 states including the Minuteman in Boston, the Little Miami in Cincy, Riverfront in St. Louis and several trails in Chicago, etc and this trail is simply the best urban trail I have ever ridden or heard about. 26 miles with scenery from Indy light industrial to Broad Ripple hipster to Carmel upscale ( maybe the best five miles of the trail) to Hamilton county farm country, through two major parks and Carmel's truly unique downtown, there is something for everyone. But what stands out are the amenities along the trail, from restrooms, water stations and numerous places scattered in many locations to get something to eat or drink, most catering to the bicycle crowd. If you are a bicycle tourist, this is a must ride trail.
Beautiful trail - plenty of access points. We were impressed by how well thought out the trails extras were. Porch swings, super clean bathrooms, even a bike repair station. There are quite a few required stops for busy roads but 9 out of 10 times the traffic stops for you.
Great trail for walking, jogging or moutain biking but not so great for road bikes. I made the mistake of assuming the whole trail was paved like the pics I saw of the trailhead in Lebanon but about 3 miles north it goes from paved to hardpack/gravel. Lots of bumps and out right potholes so keep your eyes open, whether on bike or foot. It's not impassable to road bikes but if you do use that kind of bike do yourself a favor and let some of the air out of your tires. I inflated my 28mm tires from 60 psi to about 75 psi cause I wanted to reduce drag and go a little faster. I made the round trip of about 15 miles no problems but when I got home my front tire was flat, probably from a pinch flat. Other than back and forth on surfaces not a bad trail. Loved the little oasis about 5 miles north of the trailhead! Plenty of benches if you want to take a break and a port o potty. Thanks #BetterinBoone
It now ends in Sheridan Indiana about 10 miles north of Westfield. All paved. Great scenery. Trail head in Sheridan is across from the American Legion.
I can't say enough about this trail. My opinion is that this is what most urban rail trails aspire to be. We started in Westfield and rode south toward Indy. On this day we rode down to 49th Street to the Upland Broad Ripple Tasting Room and back. There were a number of things that impressed me about this trail. It crossed a combination of urban and suburban landscapes with just enough surrounding trees and greenery to make one feel that you were riding in a more rural setting. Lots of care has been taken with this trail as there are many quite a few bathrooms and water stations along the trail. Beautiful bridges and underpasses have been created at almost all intersections with a major thoroughfare which maintains the flow of your ride. The route is well signed, though some of map signs are starting to show their age. There are plenty of people biking and walking along the route, though on this Friday morning the trail did not feel crowded. It is also obvious that this trail is an economic engine for the communities along the trail as there were many restaurants, galleries, breweries, and shops. There is great community pride in this trail as evidenced by an abundance of local art works that can be seen and enjoyed along the trail.
