Relaxing trail

July, 2021 by delnayrn

The trail is well maintained and offers a relaxing ride through the wetlands outside of West Terre Haute. Plenty of wildlife encountered on the trail from rabbits to turkeys to deer. Even better is that the pedestrian walkway adjacent to US 40 is now open. This creates a loop completely safe from traffic. The only road riding is though a sleepy little neighborhood. The “no trespassing” signs seen on the trail are on private property. Most likely to keep people from cutting through yards to get to the streets. Mosquitos, when stopped, are the main downside this time of year.

Some hills; only 3/4 completed

Some hills & bumps in the trail. Be prepared to turn around & go back or ride up a short steep hill on 3rd St. Turn right on Union, then left on 5th which will take you back to the park.

Great trail!

We parked at the Charleston Baseball Seaton Complex and rode towards Mattoon. The trail is a wonderful smooth asphalt surface which is sunny all the way to the Douglas-Hart Nature Center. It is a great trail!

Sweet Ride

April, 2021 by searl727

My first Rails to Trails ride. Beautiful landscape, nice packed gravel bed and, later near Amo, paved. Not a soul around. Some open areas where breeze was strong but mostly typical Indiana farmlands and expected wildlife. Birds aplenty.

Vandalia Trail

I love this trail. It isn't over populated. Tree lined. Asphalt is in great condition. The paved Amo to Coatesville section is 4 miles. Mostly flat, easy ride.

Vandalia Trail Greencastle to Amo Indiana

Wife and I went the day after strong storms. One tree down across the trail but we got around it ok. The first part was chipped rock and the second asphalt. I was riding a Trek Domane road bike which handled it well and wife riding a Specialized hybrid that went through without any trouble whatsoever.
Benches ever so often and it was shaded very well with some short stretches of open sky.
Loved this trail.

Lincoln Prairie Grass Trail

I fully agree with other reviews great trail. Thanx to those responsible for getting it paved. All in sun however, might want cloudy day. Easy 20+ mile ride if you want, goes into 2 towns for food also.

Charleston Illinois to Mattoon Illinois

This trail used to have some gravel but no longer..., it’s all asphalt now. It is a nice little jaunt to Mattoon and back. There is no shade except under I-57 near Mattoon. Wildflowers are beautiful. There are access points from the trail to the Charleston Country Club ( golf course) and Douglas/Hart Nature Center just outside of Mattoon. Port

We rode east from Fruitridge and Locust street. It is an easy ride. We are 70 and had no issues. Lots of shady areas. About 7.47 mile round trip.

I was not happy with the 2 Posts method of limiting trail traffic. I found them very intimidating to ride slowly through. How would a parent using the wide 2-child trailer be able to use this portion of the trail?

Lincoln Prairie Grass Trail

Disappointed

May, 2020 by melvinadrian55

The trail was rough and not really suited for road bikes. Where they patched it with ground up asphalt is very rough and not packed well and sucks you’re tires and pulls you.
