My husband and I rode this entire trail on a beautiful October afternoon. We parked our car at the Dewey Point Trailhead which is a nice paved parking area with two pavilions and restrooms with flushing toilets. Although running parallel with a busy road the boardwalk path it’s very nice, lighted in the evenings, and has views of the wetlands on one side. From the end of the boardwalk, you must find your way through some low traffic paid streets to continue on the trail. Signage would be very helpful here. The portion of the trail that runs along the Wabash river is nothing more than a gravel road that passes underneath interstate 70 twice. It is rough and some areas. The remaining section of the trail is crushed limestone along a levy on the edge of West Terre Haute. runparallel with the Wabash river. Is on south old gravel.
First time on the trail. It was very nice and obviously kept up well. Lots of amenities as far as real bathrooms or even clean and initially some shelters and benches for taking a break. Lots of opportunities for eating if that's on the list.
This is one of my favorite trails and I’ve probably biked over a hundred. It’s a good workout and also relaxing because it’s straight, mostly flat, and bordered by wildflowers and butterflies. I’d avoid the town portions in both Mattoon and Charleston, going park to park from the east of Mattoon to the west of Charleston. This is still about a ten mile stretch each way. There is only one crossing that’s at all iffy - the top of a hill both ways just east of the golf course. Otherwise just a super calm ride.
This summer they are about half way done with making an abandoned railroad bridge across the Wabash River as a spur off the circle trail. My information only comes from articles I’ve read but have seen photos of the work in progress. This is exciting. And yes, the trail really needs some maintenance on buckled asphalt but it is still one of our favorites since it is only 45 minute drive from our home in Illinois. Lots of shade, wildlife and so peaceful and low traffic.
I recently moved from a rural area in Parke County to Terre Haute.. I had no idea that the Parks and Recreation dept of Terre Haute had so many well kept trails and areas. The Heritage Trail is a phenomenal trail to bike. Mostly shaded and surrounded by nature this is truly a gem!!! The ride is very pleasant and enjoyable. From Blakey trailhead to Jones trailhead it is entirely paved. Much wildlife to be observed. It is approximately 7 miles round trip with numerous places to stop, rest and sit on a bench. To me this is HEAVEN!!!
The trail has a few spots where it’s kind of smooth but otherwise the concrete is severely heaved. Might be OK for someone to walk on, but not really suitable for biking. If you live in the area fine but don’t take a trip for this. Disappointing. There’s one nice stretch right before the bridge but that’s about it.
The newest addition to the trail nearly makes it a full circle. The CCT is one of the state’s best biking trails. It weaves it around the country side through some wooded parts of the area. The terrain can be a challenge as it is a fairly steep grade to tackle on a hot and humid day. All I all, it’s a great trail to ride.
Beautiful trail ride on 11/15/25! It runs along beside a horse trail. You will see lots of farms, cows, chickens and horses and cornfields, loved it, from Amo to Greencastle .Would have give it a 5 star if there would have been bathrooms at the end of the trail.
Covered bridge Gateway Trail in Rosedale, Indiana keep you updated
The segment east of Charleston is not paved. It's only a mile but if you are a trail completionist, be prepared for a rough ride for that mile or and back. Closer to a field road than a trail.Rest of the trail was perfect.
Had a wonderful bike ride with the family. It was a hot day, but the shaded trail made for a delightful time. We parked at S Llama St where there is a small gravel parking lot, unloaded the bikes and rode the 1.6 miles to the bridge just East of S Canal St. that crosses a creek. The scenery in summer was great and the newly updated bridge was well done. An added bonus was all the trail crossings over the streets were stamped concrete that resembled the rail crossings that used to be there.
