Path effectively connects Elkhart with the Pumpkinvine trail in Goshen, safely. But this is not a particularly beautiful or fun ride.
We rode in late March, and path was debris covered the whole way, and the ride is always within a few feet of a fast moving road.
It is safe and flat and is a great way to get from Elkart to Goshen or the reverse, but not worth making a special effort to travel to for a recreational ride. You're better off driving to Goshen and riding Pumpkinvine from there.
We ride this trail a lot. I believe the patrons of this trail set the standard for great maintenance. 2 porta pottys along this trail are much appreciated.
This is my home area trail. It's going to need some work soon but is great over all.
The Panhandle Pathway is a beautiful and expanding trail--with the most recent addition being northward through Winamac. The Friends of the Panhandle Pathway are collaborating with the Prairie Trails Club, supporters of the Erie Trail (including the Great American Rail Trail and American Discovery Trail), on defining a backroads share-the-road asphalt connector between the two non-motorized and walker routes.
I understand what this was meant to be. But it’s so overgrown that you end up walking in the street. That’s an issue for me because I wanted to have a trail the kids could walk.
It's a decent trail for locals but with unending noise for traffic and with nothing to see, I might consider skipping unless you're local.
Rode just about 8 miles on the Palos Hills end. Beautiful paved trail, beautiful weather on 8/24/25. Definitely would ride again.
Trail is beautiful but sooooo many people. Pedestrians dont care about the bike lanes, they walk in front of you
After riding 7,000 or so miles since 2019; all over the country (but primarily N IL, Iowa, WI); today is the day I got to enjoy a paved trail in Cook County. We parked in the west and rode to East end in Alsip and back. Roughly 25 miles round trip. Hot humid and windy 92F. I felt like shade was about 50% of trail length. It is a Great trail as in you do not even know you are in one of the busiest counties in the nation. I wish we could figure out how to connect from Alsip to the lakefront. We tried to bike about a mile further east on the road but then it started to seem like an industrial park so we turned around.
I've been biking this trail for over 30 years at varying degrees of fitness. It is in part, protected from sun with shade and also from wind. This offers a reprieve from really hot days with heavy wind. It can get congested so being aware of others and biking courteously is important. There is pedestrian traffic that occasionally has no clue it's a shared path, as well as the over enthusiastic cyclist that equally behaves rudely. Most people however are genuinely out enjoying nature and each other.
The pavement of the Chicago section between Foster north to Lincoln is in very rough shape, and has only deteriorated since I started using the trail regularly last September (2024). Another priority could/should be the addition of some bridge overpasses (more underpasses are probably not feasible) so that trail users could avoid having to cross several busy (and only getting busier) intersections from Devon all the way up and into Evanston. It has some really enjoyable sections, though, and some stretches in Lincolnwood/Skokie have been recently repaved.
