Kickapoo Rail Trail

Here at last!

September, 2017 by wilhelmggw

I read about this trail in the Winter 2016 Rails to Trails Magazine. So it was a real thrill to see it added to our great TrailLink list of Illinois trails, and to spend a morning checking out this first completed section. The construction and signage on the trail are excellent. At the mid-point of our ride out and back from Urbana, the wife and I had a good time exploring the downtown shops and neighborhoods of St. Joseph. We found it a friendly and still vibrant little Midwestern town, even though it's so close to the much larger cities of Champaign-Urbana.

Delphi Historic Trails

Disappointing

September, 2017 by pepley7

First of all at the present time September 4, 2017, route 18 from I-65 toward Delphi is closed. Our GPS kept trying to take us that way, and no matter what side street we tried when we came back to route 18 it was closed. So find an alternate route, before you head out. When we got into Delphi we went to Canal Park. There are some gravels paths that run along both sides of the canal. When we took a trail into town, there was absolutely no signage telling us where to find another bike trail, path, route or anything. We only managed to clock around 4 miles altogether. And about two miles of that was on the streets of Delphi. There are some nice historical houses and building to see along the way, so that was one positive thing. We were looking for a nice continuous trail, and that is not what we found here. We went into Lafayette instead.

Kickapoo Rail Trail

A very good start to a great future trail

September, 2017 by bigdealer

This trail opened last week and we happened to be passing through the area, so we rode it one way. Trail is in excellent condition -- the groups pulling the funding together did an wonderful job. Couple of explanatory signs, good bridges, safe crossings. This first section of the trail is >90% exposed, so wind and sun will be a factor. It was great to see the community out in force today playing in their new linear park. Parking at the Western end (Urbana) is allowed at Walmart, which is a block or so from the official end. Thanks to them for granting use of their parking lot for the public.

Kickapoo Rail Trail

nice rail trail

September, 2017 by usamil1

Parking is available at the Far western part of the trail at the Walmart parking lot. Rode the trail prior to its official opening, about a week before very smooth compact surface like riding On Pavement. can't wait till they complete the the total Trail!

Big 4 Trail (Lebanon to Thorntown)

nice trail

September, 2017 by jtkoehler2

couldn't get to the trail head in thorntown the road was closed. So we got on off pearl st and franklin south of SR 47. the trail to start was paved. As soon as we got out of thorntown, the pavement was a little rough. As we headed south east it varied from a little rough to some lose gravel. The lose gravel ended about a 1/2 mile north of Hazelrigg rd. 300 n. it was new smooth pavement. We rode south about another mile and turned around. We ran across another rider who said the new pavement goes for a way the it was back to what was north of Hazelrigg. ( not as rough) He said when you get nearer to Lebanon it goes back to smooth pavement. We are working up the 20 mile round trip Thorntown to Lebanon. We did half today ( hazelrigg). (10 miles) We are both in our 60's and having ridden much over the past 15 years.

Vandalia Trail

Excellent!

August, 2017 by drreneeke

What a beautiful trail! Newly paved from Amo for a few miles before hitting the gravel path. We did the full 16 and was hoping there would be a restaurant to stop at once we hit Coatsville but there was nothing convenient at the end of the trail. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. Beautiful scenery. We saw butterflies and hummingbirds throughout most of the trail. Very peaceful.

Village of Rantoul Trail

Neat trail

June, 2017 by tylerbrandi

We started off at the storm water detention pond parking area. Nice parking lot with a porta potty and the large pond is filled with goldfish or koi. Then we went North and rode the East-West section that is the old rail line. Let the kids play at a playground that's right on the trail. Finished off with a ride around historic downtown that is just off the west end of the of the old rail line trail. Not much wildlife to view but a very flat, somewhat smooth, urban trail.

Big 4 Trail (Lebanon to Thorntown)

Lovely on big tires

October, 2016 by fintone

The canopy of hardwoods, the beauty of farmland and the peace of solitude all await you here. Probably need something bigger than 23mm tires though.

I rode this trail end to end on a fat tire bike and it was a little slice of heaven.

Delphi Historic Trails

Well worth it!

September, 2016 by stacyveldman

My husband and I killed a whole afternoon riding these trails. It was very scenic, historic, and good, easy riding. We stopped at The Blue Moose in town for ice cream half way through the ride. I definitely recommend this trail, it's well worth it! Try and do a day where you have time to do all the trails. There are hidden gems on each one. We parked at the Canal Park where they had a map and just went everywhere from there.

Big 4 Trail (Lebanon to Thorntown)

Big 4

August, 2016 by ericcriswell

Overall a nice peaceful trail
Went for a 10 mile ride (5 out and back) starting at Lebanon trail head behind Menards. First 2.5 miles are newly paved and we'll maintained, after that I would recommend off road bike. My remaining 2.5 miles traveling north were a mix of old grumbles of asphalt, fine limestone, and grass. One small section about a city block long was deep small stone, the kind that doesn't compact and you just sink in. That all being said it was a nice ride with typical Indiana flat land views of fields.
