Cochituate Rail Trail

CRT update

September, 2021 by steveneuman

The Cochituate Rail Trail is complete and extends from Saxonville in Framingham going south passing Cochituate lake to Natick, a distance of four miles. Parking is available at or near Home Depot on Route 30. The southern end in Natick is just north of the Railroad station at Natick Center. Benches and bicycle racks as well as refuse containers are available along the trail.

Goffstown Rail Trail

Fun Ride with Some Nice Surprises

September, 2021 by nhsteeler

This trial is great for those who like to mountain bike, but are not hardcore. It is mostly gravel with a few sandy and paved areas here and there. Trail starts around 1/4 mile from West Side Arena in Manchester which is where we parked (and it goes seamlessly into the Piscataqoug Trail) until right before the center of Goffstown. There are some real fun surprises on here like a few spots to go swim and/or fish at Glen Lake, a few good scenic spots to take pictures, etc.

Now the Cochituate Rail Trail has more than doubled in length stretching from Saxonville to Natick ad going past Lake Cochituate alongside North Main St (Rte 27). Railroad Whistle monuments along the way and many benches and bicycle rings for a brief respite.

Once we got to the Sanitation site north of Keene the trail wasn't more then a goat trail. Muddy, rocky narrow, and not very much fun. We turned around. Maybe it would be better from Walpole south.

Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

great ride.

September, 2021 by zt48cdpc6p

This might be one of my new favorites. Clean paths, Nice crossings, Plenty of places to rest. There is only one bumpy area on the hole trail. Small complaint: the parking directions need to be updated. The office building is called Cross Point and the highway exits have changed. Otherwise , this is a nice way to spend an afternoon .

Roland Bergeron Bike Path

Nice bike path.

September, 2021 by dhaigney

Enjoyed the ride as there were not too many people using this path. It is along the roadside so it is not a wooded scenic path. The upside to this if you get hurt you would be found immediately. You can get some miles in especially if you do the path twice. Parked in the police parking lot. It can't get safer than that! I enjoy it very much and will be using this bike path a lot.

Southern section very rough, significant ATV use (officially sanctioned). Washed out slopes can be unsafe with large cobbles, exposed bedrock, and washouts. If you manage to escape the ATVs it's quiet.

West River Trail

Beautiful but bumpy ride

September, 2021 by gsm1202

I live about 7 miles from the South Londonderry trail head and only wish the trail was better suited for my hybrid bike. The first 3 miles (approx) to the Winhall campground are in bad shape (dirt festooned with rocks, roots, ruts and mud puddles). I don't know when the article summary was written, but I have a different idea of what "well maintained" means. Those with mountain bikes or fat tire bikes should have a much easier time with it though.
The trail ride is sandwiched by a campground road for a couple of miles. It's asphalt, and other than navigating several speed bumps, is an easy ride to another dirt path on the Jamaica side. It's in better shape than the South Londonderry portion. It's not in great shape for riding either but very manageable.
The two dirt path portions follow the contour of the tree lined West River. The view is particularly vivid, particularly in Autumn, and a favorite spot to hike with my dog. As a bike trail though, it needs work.

Ashuelot Recreational Rail Trail

Hinsdale to Keene

September, 2021 by aldcon_tl

This was a bike ride from Depot Street in Hinsdale to Keene State College area. Beautiful views of Ashuelot River along ride and several covered bridges. Several old mill buildings in various state of disrepair to look at. The trail from Depot Street to near Riverside Lane in Swansey has good sections of loose gravel with several sections of puddles and mud. This part of the trail is good for mountain bikes and for those that don't mind going through puddles that vary in length from a few feet to over 20 feet long. Some are deep too. A few potholes and gopher holes in this section and one bridge with bad decking boards. I'd rate this first section of the ride a 2. From Riverside Lane up to Keene trail is wide with good gravel base. Easy for most bikes to navigate this. I'd rate this section a 4.

It's a great trail and it would be good to have a map of it but this site is missing quite a bit of the trail.
