Henry Hudson Trail

Aberdeen to Sandy Hook

November, 2018 by sschwinn

I rode the northern section of the trail last week. I started at the Oakshades Park trail head, rode to the end at Popamora Point park, and then continued on a (mostly) marked on-street bike path to the Highlands Sea-Bright Bridge over to Sandy Hook. The trail was in very good shape with a few sections of root bumps. Fine for a road bike.

Once over the bridge I easily accessed the Gateway National Recreation Area multi-use path which allowed for fine cycling throughout the peninsula.

On the way back I took a detour to the Mt. Mitchill Scenic Overlook which, according to the signage, is the highest point on the eastern seaboard south of Maine.

Including some exploring of the historic sites included in the Recreation Area and the detour, about a 45 mile out and back.

great trail with incredible sights

October, 2018 by hardboy1864

This trail is a must, but be carful about the crowds.

Cross Island Parkway Trail

Newly paved trail is now open from the marina to Northern Blvd. This is a great ride especially during the week when it is not so crowded. As another reviewer stated one can extend their ride into nearby Fort Totten.

Bronx River Greenway

Short version starting in Bronxville to Kensico Dam (24mi RT)

September, 2018 by jonng911

No meter parking along Kimball Ave before Palmer Rd.
To avoid getting lost trying to connect to the bike path after passing the Scarsdales Train Station: exit at the station go north on East Pkwy; Rt on Crane Rd; Lf on Fox Meadows Rd (after Fenimore Rd) it changes to Walworth Ave and Lf on Greenacres Ave. The 2nd entrance to the trail is about 1/5 mile on the right.
There are restrooms when you reach the Kensico Dam.

VCP to Woodlands Lake - Recommended

September, 2018 by dlevinson5

I biked from VCP to Woodlands Lake (round trip) which is about 21 miles and highly recommend this trail. Overall the trail is well maintained with the exception of occasional bumps on the paved portions. The dirt trail in VCP has a few bumpy sections from tree roots and rail ties. I’m a casual biker and would say anyone with basic biking abilities can do this portion of the rail trail. Bring two bottles of water and throw some snacks in a backpack. I’m going to try going from VCP to Elmsford on my next.

Hudson River Greenway

ALERT: Lengthy construction will disrupt Greenway access from GW Bridge north

August, 2018 by catharusguttatus

Unfortunately, a small bridge over the Amtrak tracks north of the GWB will disrupt access to the Greenway to the north of that point.

So far, there don't appear to be any good other options, short of riding in the streets, to safely access the Greenway. I hope that the City will realize this is a busy bike commuting route, and come up with some decent and safe detour routes!

Old Putnam Trail

WHY ISNT THIS PAVED

August, 2018 by jmm5149

Terrible mud and dirt year round. Ecological arguments will never stop people from using this trail and attempting to get to the Putnam trailway with all kinds of wheeled vehicles. It will continue its descent into a gross, barely navigable path until this is paved. The wetlands are hundreds of yards away. Holy smokes Bronx. Do you really want to waste your one opportunity to be kind of cool?

D&L Trail

Beat Me Up A Bit...

August, 2018 by lou.behrman

This is the tail of two rides. The one going out... And the one coming back...

I joined the trail at the Virginia Forrest trail head north of New Hope. I'm riding an ICE Adventure HD recumbent trike and heading north to Uhlerstown.

The ride up was gorgeous... Nice warm weather, not a lot of traffic, really picturesque. The trail is basically flat with the exception of a few quick climbs at the lock sites. I had an issue with just one where there was a lot of loose stone on that quick climb. That's really the issue when climbing with a 'bent trike. Keeping the traction to the ground. I had just a little problem that I overcame with a little repeated effort.

The problem started with about 6 miles left in the ride on the return trip. The "problem" being the trail became what I'm going to call a single-track. Instead of a nice wide cinder lane, it became a single track of cinder that was just wide enough for a walker or someone on a bicycle. I'm riding a nice wide trike, so two of my tires were in the grass all the time and I felt like I was riding a high resistance trainer for the last 6 miles. So, between that and the increased heat, I was pretty cooked by the time I got back to my truck.

Now, I did ride this stretch going out. But being fresh, it didn't affect me the way it did on the way back. I'm giving this review 4 stars because it is a beautiful ride. And for walkers and folks on bikes, my issues won't be their issues.

I'm going to be interested in finding out if the single track was an anomaly of the stretch I rode, or if it's prevalent the entire length of the trail. I know that the upper portion of the ride the trail was wide and the ride comfortable. I just had an issue with that last 6 miles when the temps climbed into the 90s and my brain was cooking.

Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail

Wonderful Peaceful Trail

August, 2018 by heochief

We rode this trail late afternoon to twilight and found it delightful. The trail hugs the canal and is mostly on crushed stone but very smooth and firm. we saw a ton of wildlife and the scenery was beautiful. Lots of shade mixed with open areas for sun. We will return to this area and ride the entire trail from trailhead to trailhead. We joined the trail just outside of Robbinsville N.J.. Gorgeous ride at a great time of the day with great weather.

Ocean breezes and highway sounds

Yeah, a good ride, which connects via tunnels under the highway to Jones Beach and a more direct connection to the 5-mile bike path that goes north to the mainland. Get sweaty then enjoy the salty ocean beach waters. A go
