Airport run

February, 2018 by mikewaine

Working at the airport and looking for a fun, easy run close by to suit my limited ability !! I ran around Derby lake which was about a 5k distance on double track trail. Trail was wide with no elevation, a little muddy after the rain but easily run able. Parking was easy, facilities were clean, run was fun. I will be back next time I’m in town !!

Manayunk Bridge Trail

Cynwyd Heritage Trail

February, 2018 by hmuchnick

The Cynwyd Heritage Trail and the Schuylkill River Trail are wonderful, with one glaring and dangerous exception. There is no easy direct linkage between the two trail systems even though they are two blocks away from each other. For everyone interested in continuing their wonderful journey, they are exposed to a very complicated and unregulated T offset intersection at Umbria and Leverington Sts. Whether walking, biking or running there is no safe way to go. Is there any plan in the offing to solve this issue?

Peace Valley Park Hike & Bike Trail

Beautiful trail! Paved trail all the way around the lake!

January, 2018 by jeantpinelli

Beautiful paved trail all the way around the lake with nice visitor's center with bathroom facilities. Several parking lots around the lake, some paved some gravel. Great place to ride when you don't want to ride on the road and other mixed surface trails are sloppy. Doylestown Bike Trail network connects to this trail with only one very small road section. And, Doylestown Bike Trail connects to 202 Parkway Trail. We did a 30 mile all paved trail ride with 1600 ft of climbing. Bring your climbing legs since this is NOT a flat trail. Also, lots of foot traffic around the lake so go early or out of season. On a warm day in January was amazed at number of people on the trail so can't image how busy it gets in season! Perfect for road or gravel bikes.

Schuylkill River Trail - Valley Forge to Philadelphia

The Grand Lady Of The Schuylkill River Trails

January, 2018 by rcpat

I love this trail for many reasons. I grew up in Manayunk. I played, fished, and explored the banks of the Schuylkill River. In my older years, I got into biking again. I read that they converted a lot of railroad tracks to a trail on the Schuylkill River. I was really excited. I rode the trail in 2015 for the first time. I was like a little kid in a candy store. I could not wait to see what was around the next bend and so on.
The trail is mainly level with little ascents. The trail is mostly asphalt with some crushed gravel on the Manayunk Towpath. There is a " GAP" when you get to Manayunk in the trail. Just stay on the Main St, you will see signs to get on the Towpath. When traveling in Manayunk be careful because the area in the summer is usually crowded.
This trail is truly the Grand Lady of the Schuylkill River Trails. There is so much beauty and history to see. First, biking into Philadelphia showcases some of the most interesting sites along the Schuylkill River such as the rowers, boat house row, The Philadelphia Art Museum and the city skyline etc. Secondly, going west of Philadelphia there are a lot options you can take. Recommended, if you need a break, Manayunk has a lot of eateries. In this area, there are other trails to explore. The Manayunk Trail Bridge is a must. The view is magnificent. Some of the other trails are Lincoln Drive,Cynwyd,Pencyoyd and Wissahickon Valley Park. Finally, after leaving the towpath you will get back on the Schuylkill trail at Shawmont. There the trail really opens up. There are other trails that connect, such as CrossCounty and Perkiomen.
Enclosing, I thank all the people who made these trails available. Even though its wintertime, as I right this review, I am getting the " Itch".

Barnegat Branch Trail

Good commuter trail

December, 2017 by slipsoup

My friend and I rode the trail from Railroad Avenue in Forked River to what we thought was the end of the trail in Barnegat. We thought it was the end because there was a zero marker and it said End. However, we later learned after looking at the map that the trail actually went farther. I guess is was marked as the End because there's a break in the trail there. The distance we rode was about 6.5 miles one way. This trail is best used by commuters or beginner riders. The surface is mostly tight-packed gravel. There are several crossings, most not heavily trafficked streets. The scenery is not much to speak of, as it flanks busy roads most of the time. This makes it good for commuting. The last 2.5 miles we rode were the most scenic, going through a forested area. I wouldn't recommend this trail if you're looking for scenery and want to feel removed from the hustle and bustle.

Mostly soy fields and horse farms, plus a touch of suburbia along this Monmouth County trail. Good news recently in that East Windsor will fund an extension into Mercer County (through vineyards!).

Route 52 Bridge Trail

Beautiful views and a safe and pleasant ride

November, 2017 by musicman.aje83

I usually park along Broadway Ave., but you could also park down at Kennedy Park. From Broadway to the trail head is a short, but semi-tricky ride as cars constantly pull in and out of the restaurant and liquor store there. There is a nice sidewalk once you get past the restaurant. From there it's smooth riding. The bridges take a bit of effort and are of course easier to handle if your bike has more gears, but they give you a nice work out. If your going for a longer ride, it might be prudent to walk your bike up the bridges to save energy for later. The tops of the bridges are great places to stop for photos. The path is about 4 people wide, so you need to be careful when speeding down the bridges when there is a lot of foot traffic. The path is separate from the vehicle lane with an about 3 foot high barrier in between the path and vehicle lanes. Bikes can also ride in the vehicle lane, but it is fairly dangerous as the shoulder is small in places. There are a couple fishing piers with parking lots which can serve as places to rest along the way, the Somers point side fish pier has a porta-potti I believe. Further along the path is a Visitor's center which is only open at certain times, but it does have bathroom's when it is open. The upper deck of the center is a great place to stop to take pictures. The bridge into Ocean city is quite steep and you need to mind your speed both coming into the city and when your are headed back towards the Visitor's center. Coming into the city, there is an intersection fairly close to the end of the bridge. Headed back to the visitor's center, there is a tight turn that can surprise you if you are rolling too fast down the bridge. From the Ocean City end, you can continue riding up to the boardwalk. Be aware that OC does not allow you to ride on sidewalks and the roads can be quite dangerous and full of traffic during the summer season. You can also head up to Haven and ride down it, which will eventually connect to another bike path.

Pleasantville to Somers Point Bike Path

Simple flat trail through pretty cities.

I started off at the VFW parking lot in Somers Point and rode down to the former rail bridge over the Black Horse Pike. This is a great trail for cruising and relaxing as well as meeting people. The main downside of this trail is the many cross streets. Local knowledge is useful here to know which streets you can simply stop and then roll on through and which streets you need to keep a very wary eye out for drivers (Central, Tilton, Mill, etc.) . Also, there are a few places where roots have made the path bumpy and places where the trail turns slightly while crossing major roads. Pleasantville can be not so pleasant at times, but it's fine in the daytime. The other neat thing about this trail is that it connects to the 9th street bridge that takes you into Ocean City. There are a couple routes besides the one marked on the map that'll get you to the bridge without having to cross at the major intersection before the bridge.

This trail handily connects the Schuylkill River trail to the Wissahickon Valley Trail. This allows you to park along the river on Kelly Drive and make your way over to Wissahickon if that is your goal.
