If you haven't seen or been there yet, new 1.5 section towards Pittsfield was officially opened last week. Ends/Starts at Crane Road. Parking lot and toilets are available. New dirt lot on Rt. 8 before you turn off US7/Rt 8 connector road
My friend and I started at Hopewell Junction and glad we did. It was a nice leisurely ride up to Walkway on the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. The trail is very well maintained, and an easy ride. We locked the bikes up by the walkway, headed into town for an incredible lunch. I only wish it were more scenic but very happy we chose this way to ride.
Very consistent trail with a variety of lake, stream and Mountain View’s. A short jaunt from a mid-way entrance takes you to Fruition, a nice chocolate/ ice cream spot. Saw a snapping turtle, deer and a beaver dam & lodge. Nice information signs along the way. Given a nice Saturday, trail was thinly traveled. Did ride with E-Bikes.
Not much to say about a trail in the middle of the city and only about a mile long but it does have some great views and a lot of history that includes the old Harmony Mills that ran on hydro power and the Canals that provided the hydro power. Now please understand that by Hydro Power I mean it was powered by water not electricity. The water turned turbines in the basement that was diverted by the Canals and the power was transferred by belts and pulley's to run the Mills. Later the water was used to generate electricity but not for many years. Back in the day Cohoes had numerous Mill's and was a major employer and manufacturer of textiles.
What can I say, this is a great trail for a bike ride. Great scenery, flat for the most part and wasn't a lot of people. Must do trail
We drove 5 hours round trip to ride this trail. It was totally worth it. The views were stunning. Rode the shorter trail across the reservoir after, and stopped for a bite to eat in Woodstock. Had no issues on hybrid bikes.
I walked this trail yesterday in icy conditions. Until there is an appreciable snowfall in the area I strongly recommend having traction devices with you. I parked in the lot of the Mountain Top Historical Society (closed in winter) which serves as a trailhead. I can’t add to the prior reviews about the non-winter trail conditions but it’s definitely for mountain bikes only.
At the north end of the trail there is an easy connection to walking-only trails leading to a scenic overlook of Kaaterskill Falls as well as a trail to the bottom of the falls. The trailhead parking lot at that end off of Laurel House Road has portable toilets.
We biked this round trip , going East to west on a Sunday in May 2021. There was plenty of parking when we arrived at 10 am. As the trail went west it went uphill but the scenery became more and more beautiful. We are looking forward to skiing and or biking it again!
You can ride / walk this trail from Waterford Lock 2 about 6 miles North just before Mechanicsville. Packed dirt and an old lock. Road November 2021. couple of road crossings, well marked with signs .
I am really torn on this trail, on one hand it is an amazing experience and a view of the Hudson you will never forget, on the other hand if it is a weekend this place is jam packed with other people taking in the views as well. This was part of a ride on the Hudson Valley Rail trail all the way to New Paltz, I will review that trail separately. Breaking up the ride by going one way early and coming back about 4 hours later made a huge difference in the crowd level and made a much more pleasant ride. Facilities at the walkway were clean and outstanding, lots of historic information, and there were vendors. There are plenty of places to park, I paid $7 (Summer 2021) to park in the official lot and considering the facility and the zero cost to cross the Hudson in either direction I did not feel it was too much for parking. My only complaint aside from the crowds, was that the vendors packed up and closed long before the bridge closed so that was a little disappointing because I did want to get a shirt, plan accordingly if you are doing this as part of a longer ride. I will likely do this ride again but it will likely be part of a longer ride when I do.
This rail trail is among the best we’ve pedaled. We traveled to the area (with our RV and Ebikes) specifically to tide this trail. We were thrilled. It’s beautifully maintained. The multiple road crossings are carefully managed. The views are super nice. We ride in Oct ‘21 so the foliage was full and bright. Downtown N Adams is very pretty from the trail. Some on-trail interpretive signs for some of the historic train related structures and remnants would be welcome.
