Great Ride with My Son – Smooth and Scenic BWI Trail (12.4 Miles)

I biked the BWI Trail today with my son. We had a fantastic time. We covered 12.4 miles, and the trail was smooth, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. It loops around the airport, but you’d be surprised scenic it feels, with stretches of greenery, wooded areas, and even a few nice rest stops. Great for casual riders and pros alike. We’ll definitely be back for another ride.

An amazing free resource for the lower eastern shore. Flat sand trail mostly covered with pine needles. I would not recommend this trail if your tires are less than 50mm (2 inch) wide. Minimal but effective main trail markings. Multiple unmarked side trails. Adequate parking. Pack a lunch and make a day of it. This is a state forest not a park, there are port-a-john's near the parking area.

Each time I think how awesome it would be if it connected to the larger trail system leading into Lewes, Cape Henlopen State Park, and Rehoboth. On occasion, we will get into the car and drive to one of those trailheads. The Milton rail trail is beautiful, but maybe be a little shortsighted for those wanting more of a workout/challenge/enjoyment.

garailroader is correct - There is no legal parking on the west end (Ilchester) of this trail. The trail simply "dead ends" at the edge of Ilchester Road, making it appear that that would be the beginning of the trail for people parking along the road, under the railroad bridge, or even across the river on several pull over spots. Unfortunately, the entire area is a no parking zone, and the powers that be expect people to park in the park (there is an entrance fee) and use the trail from the east end at Lost Lake (or park near the swinging bridge and cross it to join the Grist Mill Trail). Also, the article above mentions abandoned railroad tracks. These tracks are not abandoned and are still active. There are a few trains per day.

Cross Island Trail

I frequently ride the Cross Island Trail. You can extend your ride starting at the Royal Farms. Continue on Sadler Rd when it ends make a left on Chester River Beach Rd then right on VFW Ave. At the Quality Inn make a left onto Winchester Creek Rd. Then right onto Hissey Rd and then left back onto Winchester Creek Road. Stop at Nesbit Rd. The roads are not busy and will add 4 more miles to your round trip.

Cross Island Trail

Walking out from the Kent Island Hyatt Hotel not very nice

We were on Kent Island for a wedding, and we took a stroll from the Hyatt Hotel in the direction away from the Bay Bridge. The trail runs alongside the busy road for a mile or so, then there’s a short stretch in a pleasant piney woods, and then back to the busy road. The trail is well maintained and the surface is good, and the part in the woods was pretty nice. But for most of our 3.5 mile walk (total, there and back) it was like walking beside a busy road. If I did this again, I’d try to access the trail at a place where you would have a nicer experience.

Stony Run Trail

This trail is perfect for beginners. And has a nice mixture of Terrain, heights and splits to keep it interesting. You will be tired but not exhausted if you walk the entire trail and back. Would recommend.

Trail is Great, Parking Not So Great

I was in the area visiting my parents in Ellicott City and found this trail that looked like a good target for a 5 mile morning walk. I parked at the Ilchester Rd end and found the trail head. The trail seems very well kept, 2 of the bridges were new and I didn't see any litter, fallen trees or other maintenance issues. I am thinking the trail must have been recently paved as it was very smooth with no roots cracking and bending the asphalt. A lot of people using the trail and swimming in the river. Great to see so many getting out on a nice summer day. When I finished my walk and went back to the parking lot my dad's truck was not there. My first thought was why would someone steal that 20 year old truck. As I was pondering what to do next, I noticed a sign at the end of the parking lot and went over to take a look. It showed that it was private parking and patrolled by Paladin Impound and showed the address of the Impound lot. A $30 Uber ride and a $280 fine and I got my dad's truck back. I obviously should have paid closer attention to the parking but I feel it is a bit of a trap. The Private Parking sign is kind of a conspicuous location like they are hoping you don't see the sign and do park there so they can collect their bounty. I wasn't the first car parked in the lot, and someone else was parked there when I was waiting for Uber. Anyway, if you do check this trail out be very careful to make sure you are parking in the correct trailhead parking lot.
