I round-trip biked between Joliet and Symerton, so about 2/3rds of the trail. The words in the title sum up this path Perfectly. Once you get outside of the Joliet area (doesn't take long) you're in the country. The trail (limestone, small gravel) is flat as a pancake (no hills) and mostly straight (meaning you aren't making turns). The biggest factor out here is easily the sun. A good deal of the trail has direct sun exposure, especially once you get south of Manhattan. I'd highly recommend sunscreen and ample fluids.
The trail itself is in decent condition. There is a dangerous area that's parallel to the Chicago Speedway (if you look over) there's an area with courser gravel, adjoined by a small area of sand-like limestone. The sandy area is very dangerous, you'll swerve in this. Be sure to proceed through this area with caution. Near Midewin and south of it the trail features a good deal of gravel portions of the path. These can be detoured using the grass path on either side, but just make sure you're paying attention to these..as they're dangerous, especially for your tires.
I spotted a few rest areas at Sugar Creek, north Manhattan and Midewin. I believe all three have restrooms, benches, path signage and a couple of them may have water fountains.
I enjoyed my ride this morning but the sun can be a major factor for this path, especially if you ride in the sectors that feature no tree coverage, or if youre going for a longer ride. Would I ride it again?...probably not.
Does the job
Pretty cool trail, not too much uphill or downhill. Perfect for speed riders like me. Simple as this, if you like to ride then ride, 26 miles makes it perfect. Go for it!
I'm pretty new to the area and haven't read all the other reviews here, but have enjoyed riding portions of this trail and will finish the whole thing soon. If you ride at night it gets dark because most of it is unlit wooded areas and there are few street lights. Only complaint is that as of Summer 2020, there are quite a lot of tree roots buckling the asphalt and even broken through in some spots. I have a road bike and any cycling enthusiasts know how harsh it can be to hit those anywhere above 15 mph without big tires or a suspension. There are also some bridges with uneven planking that will make you feel like you're dual-wielding two machine guns as you cross. A great trail overall but road bikes are in for a mild thrashing.
I recently walked this trail, and I loved every moment of it. The scenery is great and I have seen people fishing, taking pictures, and talking as they walk.¿¿
There is limited parking at the south end of the trail, as they have torn out the park to build condos. There is more parking, with a porta potty, a little ways north on IL Rt 25. Otherwise, the trail is superb in the south section. I have ridden every section south of Algonquin, and except for small portions where the pavement needs some work, and the bothersome on-road sections, this is a wonderful trail to ride.
I recently rode the trail south from Indiana Welcome Center. The pavement has developed deep bone-jarring cracks that are bad enough to potentially damage wheels. It's especially bad south of downtown Griffith. I recommend you avoid until they rehabilitate what otherwise would be an enjoyable ride.
This is a nice smooth trail for all types of bikes, but it's hard to find and follow. And you'll run into construction on Calumet Avenue in Indiana.
Best Trail in northern chicagoland by far. you get a taste of the woods, the suburbs, wild life ... and the cherry on top is the Botanic Garden. Ride Safe.
Absolutely beautiful and electric trail
This trail is ok for a slow ride. I wouldn’t use it to work out as it’s short and crowded most of the time. Late night ride is empty and well lit but there have been assaults etc in the past on this trail. I’ve used it to avoid having to ride armitage/north ave from west to East but on a nice day, I found its faster dealing with car drivers on the road.
