Pecatonica Prairie Trail

Much Improved

September, 2022 by bazjkm2

It's been a while since I last rode the PPT so I was curious to see what had changed and if the reviews were accurate. Based on today's conditions (9/28/22), I'm happy to report that the trail has greatly improved since my last time on it. With one caveat - the part from the S. Meridian (Rockford) head to the WInnebago County line 1 mile west of Pecatonica is in great shape and very rideable for most people. West of that, towards Freeport, is a different story. More suited for ATV's than any bike. Not recommended. It's not developed at all and really isn't ready for any civilized biking. But, I got in 26 miles R/T on the part mentioned and on a perfect autumn day like today, it could not have been any better. I highly recommend you get out and enjoy it before winter arrives.

Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail

I and M Canal Trail

September, 2022 by dhn14519_tl

Started out from Utica and rode to trails end in LaSalle. Trail was in fairly good shape, but needed weeds cut down. Went back to Utica and headed towards Ottawa. The trail was like an old maintenance road that had been neglected. Very tall weeds that prevented me in many places from seeing where I could ride. After going about two miles I turned around because I didn't feel safe. It's a shame that there is so little maintenance on what is a beautiful area.

Perryville Path

Some nice resurfacing and a new extension

September, 2022 by blommer.mike

I started near N Bell School Rd and Argus for inline (speed) skating, which really likes smooth asphalt. I headed to Perryville Rd, and then all the way north to Rock Cut State Park, and picked up that path, going all the way to I90.

The path was surprisingly smooth the entire way, except for approximately 1km rough patch near Spring Creek Rd. But still doable on skates

There is a BRAND NEW path extension in the state park that connects Perryville to Rock Cut path. See pictures.

Jane Addams Trail

Update Jane Addams Trail site.

September, 2022 by williamcspr

On their site they said had a message from Aug.9 that the trail got beat up from a storm. So today I took a shot and gave it a try.Bad choice.I (silly me) would have thought they would have done some repairs, nope.Hang on to your handlebars.I went home after 7 miles one way, maybe next year after repairs.Other than that flat and straight, nice rural feel and quite.

Badger State Trail

Costs money with Portions closed

August, 2022 by danthemanwithapan

This trail was great in 2019 and before. It has drastically gone downhill in the years since. Portions of the trail close and stay closed for years. Yes years. The tunnel shut down around 2019/2020 and has not reopened since that. The trail closed north of Monroe and the route around it just absolute trash and completely unsafe. If I am riding on a trail I don't want to take a 5+ mile detour along a 55 mph highway with little to no shoulder. The trails are rarely groomed as well. Be ready for tall grasses. Like I said, this trail used to be amazing, but Wisconsin still charges for it and completely lacks any effort when it comes to maintenance. Disappointing.

Jane Addams Trail

not good right now…

August, 2022 by manehrkorn_tl

Because I didn’t find this information anywhere on this or the JAT website be advised that there is a ton of washed out trail specifically north of Scioto Mills and the trail is actually closed north of mile marker 8 (Red Oak)

Badger State Trail

Nice trail, but…

August, 2022 by kd4q9cvkp8

I rode the whole trail today on my way from Madison to Freeport, Illinois. The trail was great except for two closures. The first one, north of Monticello, must have included the bragged-about tunnel, since I never saw it. This closure was well-marked with bike detour signs. The second closure, just north of Monroe, was marked with a sign that says, “find alternate route.” I chose to ride west here to Highway 69, which was had cars whizzing by at 65. I don’t know why, on a State trail, Wisconsin doesn’t immediately fix this two closures, especially when they want to charge you to use it.

Badger State Trail

Monroe Wi toward Monticello

July, 2022 by dogstites

Beautiful ride on the trail. There was a bridge out and we had to take a detour onto country roads, but it was a quiet ride. Trails were great! Mix of sunshine and open air to cooler rides in the trees. Did not make it to Monticello…but next time!

Pecatonica Prairie Trail

make sure you have a good bike.

July, 2022 by happyheidi02

My husband and I rode from pecatonica and did 21 miles. My bottom is soooo sore from the bumpy roads. I even just bought a new seat prior to going and now my tailbone hurts so bad I can barely walk or sit. Maybe I’m a baby but I definitely preferred the smoother ride of the Jane Adams trail

Hennepin Canal Parkway

Hennepin Trail-Rock Falls

July, 2022 by dynomight

We started out at the park on E 2nd Street in Rock Falls. Very nice park along the river....had bathrooms but they were locked (in July???). Hit the trail in Rock Falls and headed south on the trail. First 3 miles of the trail were on asphalt, very bumpy conditions. After that, it was what appeared to be packed dirt, maybe had limestone on it at one time. Had to be watchful of craters and debris on the path. Could have used some pruning as well. Some areas of the trail were very narrow. Was fairly quiet on the trail, ran across a few people fishing, some walking, and only one other set of people biking. Could only go 16.2 miles and then came upon a Trail Closed sign. If you like less traffic, this is a good trail...but could use some maintenance. We saw some snakes, rabbits, squirrels, and deer. There were a couple places along the way to stop to go to the bathroom...but no place to get water.

We started our journey just outside of Freeport, IL. Nice flat trail. The gravel/limestone is pretty non existent. Had to watch out for some gopher holes along the way. But was a nice ride to the Wisconsin border.
