May 20 on the trail we were plagued by stretches with fallen trees. This was a big problem for us bike packing.
We checked the trail from Gaylord to Mackinaw City on Sunday 05/11/25. Gaylord to Topinabee still has alot of trees down on the trail due to the ice storm but Topinabee to Mackinaw City has been cleared.
I happened to grow up within earshot of trains that used to travel this route as part of the Soo Line, and had wanted to return as a retiree to bike what is now a recreational trail. Its primary use is for motorized vehicles, but I happened to ride the segment from St. Ignace to Allenville during a weekday in October and only ran into a couple of dudes trapping beaver. I took this trail north, then returned on the Castle Rock Road, which made for a really nice ride. There is a lot to see if you like a variety of landscapes. I even saw a pair of Trumpeter Swans on Hay Lake.
I used my Trek Fuel EX MTB for this ride, but only because I planned on also riding Valley Spur near Munising on this trip. I could have easily used either my Salsa Fargo (29x2.2") or All-City Mach King (700x38c), but I'd probably not do it with anything less than 38c tires.
Rode to this trail Vanderbilt to Wolverine and from Indian River to Cheboygan. The trails are crushed limestone and well maintained.Beautiful scenery.
Attempted to go from Brimley state park to Sault Ste. Marie on 3" tires but the trail was still not doable. Not a biking trail. This trail is for ATV/snowmobiles. Loose gravel is thrown down and I suppose the ATVs are expected to pack it down. There are many areas of deep loose sand also. The scenery is nothing special. After 5 miles I gave up and hit the road. There was no fun riding since all you do is look down on the trail to pick your way through gravel ruts, rocks, sand, and mud pits.
This is a lovely perfect trail. We started at the very beginning of the trail at the beach by the little leagues fields in Rogers City. The trail goes through town by beaches and the harbor, more beaches, through the woods, over small wooden bridges past the beach on U.S. 23, past Heoft State Park and on to 40 mile point lighthouse. You never ride on the highway at any point, the trail is safe, smooth and stunning! A must do trail!stunning!
Trail good for orv's Pot holes and rough gravel.Turned around after a mile out.
I’ve ridden this trail many times from Topinabee to Wolverine and back; topinabee to cheboygan and back. Great trail for gravel bike. Well maintained, safe, and very scenic.
My husband and I rode this and it was fantastic. So glad the space is claimed along the Lake Huron shoreline for this paved trail. We want a similar trail close to Alpena.
The motorized vehicles on the island since 1901. The loop is 8.2 miles, they have a lot of souvenirs to remember your bike or hike or horse carriage ride around the island.
What a nice trail! Peaceful ride to Bolton and back (20 miles) and only saw 2 other riders. Trail is in great shape. The trailhead in Alpena is very nice with picnic tables and very nice restrooms. Looking forward to riding more of the northeastern trail, as well as the north central trail.
