Bay County Riverwalk/Railtrail System

in need of help

Ok for a stroll on a fat tire bike very bumpy. Rough trail not great for a road bike unless you have 28mm tires.

Hampton Township Nature Trail

First ride of the year

April, 2017 by tsymborski

This a nice easy trail to ride. Well maintained, with parking at both ends of the trail. The trailhead at the end of Jones Rd. has Porta-Jon's. Along the way I saw Red Squirrels, a dozen Box Turtles and the occasional Crains.

Border-to-Border Trail

Urban Ride

February, 2017 by olyolson

2/17/17 Parker Mill to to west side of Bandemer park.I give this section 5 stars for the ability to travel through a big town of Ann Arbor and only have to cross one major road, doing this on my mountain bike. I was surprised of the quite wooded sections, and many walking trails along the river. There is no easy way to bike around the perimeter of Ann Arbor. This trail is a great ride right through the middle of town with out being on the shoulder of a road. Will play important role on the Border to Border system.

Lakelands Trail State Park

Good to terrible

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

From Hamburg this is a nice trail. Just to see it I rode the .4K east to the end from Hall road. There it is completely blocked with a barricade and dense trees and brush.

Going West it's nice asphalt just beginning to crack in some places. Lovely mix of scenery. Just past Pinckney you have to cross busy highway 36. At that point the trail is the mentioned limestone surface and relatively hard and not bumpy. I've been on worse pavement. There are a number of bridges and the transitions of this limestone part are excellent - better than the asphalt bridge transitions.

Unfortunately this part of the trail is only good to the Unadilla township line just before you cross highway 36 again.

I did continue to ride from the line the 300 or so yards to 36 but it was cautious going on my road bike. At 36 I looked down the trail and it was 2 track and seemed sandier yet. I wasn't even tempted to fight it and just turned around. Wider knobby rides would probably be okay.

With the scenery and central state access this has the potential to be one of the better touring trails in Michigan. Someone should push the legislature to putt priority to this trail.

Milford Trail

Excellent trail lacking signs

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

I included this as part of a long ride from South Lyons City Trail, Huron Valley Trail, Island Lake Pathway, Kensington Metropark trail, and Milford Trail to Milford and back. Excellent trail. Good surface, nice variety, pretty scenery. On the Milford end it's difficult to find. My friend said back of the YMCA but there's lots of roads there to various parking areas and the trail is further back still.

At the other end there are a couple of Y junctions and it's not clear which to take. Even in Kensington it's not clear where to go. It's in serious need of signs. It's unfortunate because it's a great trail overall. I'm giving it a 4 for the signage problems.

Huron Valley Trail

Needs maintenance

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

I included this as part of a long ride from South Lyons City Trail, Huron Valley Trail, Island Lake Pathway, Kensington Metropark trail, and Milford Trail to Milford and back. It works okay as a connector trail. The asphalt is cracked and broken making the ride a bit bumpy if you're on high pressure road tires. Not scenic but at least gets you away from riding on roads. It needs signs. I'd only use it as local transportation - not a destination bike ride for pleasure unless you live locally and want to take the kids for a jaunt or a daily training run. Might be awkward for roller blades.

Kensington Metropark Trail

Great trail

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

I included this as part of a long ride from South Lyons City Trail, Huron Valley Trail, Island Lake Pathway, Kensington Metropark trail, and Milford Trail to Milford and back. Excellent trail. Good surface, nice variety, pretty scenery. On my outbound leg I went on the west side of the lake. On my return I went on the east side. I'm putting only 4 stars (would make it 4.5) because it lacks signs to the connecting trails of Milford and Island Lake Pathway at their turnoff junctions.

Vassar Rail Trail

Beautiful and full of wildlife

November, 2016 by morgane1216

I run this trail because I live walking distance to it. I've ran across many little critters and even a small herd of deer that I almost ran right into! Haha.
Beautiful trail, especially in the fall. Colors every where. The trail even has mile markers painted on it so I know how far I've gone. There are 2 parks in it's span, benches along it, and bathrooms to the front.

Hines Park Trail/Rouge River Greenway

Nice trail for a straight forward distance ride

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

I rode this entire trail round trip starting at the very nice parking lot on Michigan ave. For most of the trail you can choose to ride on Hines Drive which about half the bikers were doing. I went north on the trail to northville where I stopped for a bowl of soup and returned on Hines Drive.

The surface is mostly quite good and generally flat. At the Northville end I finished on the road rather than the trail to 7 mile road simply because I wanted the variation of a significant climb.

The only confusing place is at the University. Stay on the trail there and don't be tempted to do the road. There's a place where there is a little roundabout circle and it's not obvious which trail to take. Coming from South turn left going downhill into the forest. Obviously coming from north to south turn right at the top of the rise.

Also watch out for the detour away from Hines Drive at the Northville end although either trail or road you end up nearby on 7 mile.

Finally note that after a rain (like my ride) there are a number of significant spots where the trail is under water. But it's easy to bike around through the grass.

I hit one bad pothole on a bridge near Merriman road. I never saw it since it was covered by leaves at it almost threw me off my bike.

As someone said it's a pretty URBAN trail with nice parks to the side all along the ride. The turnoff to the 275 trail is well marked. My 4 rating is because it's very nice but not outstanding and I got tired of traffic noise. Hines Drive is a well traveled road. I do recommend doing this trail. Stop at Nankin Mills interpretive center if you have time and do a loop around Northville. They have a little rebuilt block similar to Greenfield village though very small. It's worth the visit.

Macomb Orchard Trail

paved trail 2016

October, 2016 by rsmith356

Fully paved trail, thru farm fields, woods, rural. Less crowded than Paint Creek Trail. The late Summer/Fall rides are beautiful. Bonus: You can get to Achatz Pie house, 1.5 miles off trail thru Armada, only .25 miles of road riding at end.
