Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park

Why the gap

August, 2019 by ljwerner

Rode from Reed City to Leroy. Nice trail except for the third of a mile south of Sylvan Rd. For some inexplicable reason this section is still unpaved and is loose gravel. Not only is it dangerous for road bikes the sharp stones caused my wife to get a flat tire. Tried to do a little research on why but came up empty. Would recommend walking this section for safety.

Saginaw County to Bay County Connector

Wonderful trail

August, 2019 by tcoatoam

The only negatives for this trail is that it’s a dead end and near the end there is slight degradation of the surface with plants coming though the asphalt, but it’s marked. Positives Very little traffic Wide enough to comfortably ride side by side Smooth trail with almost no bumps Incredible views of Saginaw River and adjacent marshes Lots of wildlife, have seen eagles, herons, coyote, muskrats, rabbits, deer, and more.

A mix of river trail with city trail but the opportunity to pass through the Baldwin Lake is really awesome. My wife and I really enjoyed this trail.

Big Rapids Riverwalk

Great Starting Point fro White Pines Trail

July, 2019 by tim36r

The Riverwalk trail connects several parks along the Muskegon river in Big Rapids. It has 3 connector trails to the White Pines rail trail.

A small section under the M-20 bridge is not paved, but everything north is smooth and scenic. Any of the parks make nice trail head parking with amenities to access the White Pines trail which is paved from Big Rapids north to Reed City.

Big Rapids to Reed City

July, 2019 by tim36r

We like to trail ride at a leisurely pace, targeting 20-30 miles. We have previously ridden From Comstock Park to Sand Lake, and found the trail enjoyable and well maintained.

This trip we started in Big Rapids, parking on the south end of the Big Rapids Riverwalk trail. This trail follows and crosses Muskegon River and connect in 3 places to the White Pines trail.
The ride north was nice following the river part of the way. The grade to the north is predominately up. Between a wind from the north and the grade, north was a bit of a work out, but the return trip saw our average speed double.

Would recommend riding south to north on this section if you are planning a round trip.

Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail

Great Trail

July, 2019 by aparker2852

Rode 50 mile on the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail. I started in Ovid and turned around in Pewamo. The trail had about 1-2 miles paved through Ovid, St. John, Fowler, and Pewamo the remained of the trail was gravel, crushed lime stone. The trail condition was good and overall smooth without a lot of pot holes and ruts. Even with the overall good condition of the trail the 40 plus miles of gravel was pretty punishing by the end of the ride. One small area outside of Ovid appeared to have very little gravel coverage and may present a problem when wet...potential muddy area. The weather was great for a ride the scenery was great the trail was pretty much through farm lands lots of fields of corn and wheat with old barns and farm houses along the way. My bike was a gravel bike with 38mm tires.

Pere Marquette State Trail

Farwell to Clare.

June, 2019 by saholzhausen1

This was my first ride of the season and very enjoyable. Passed over a small stream and the stream meandered along the trail for a short section. Also traveled past wooded areas with shade and past a few small business. There is a small section that travels on the road for about 1.5 miles but I have heard they will be adding a paved section which will go into clare past the depot. Bathrooms present there .

Fred Meijer Heartland Trail

Poor surface

June, 2019 by b-r-kirby

The trail is easy to access and has plenty of restrooms and places to get water and food. However it is very rough at the Alma end for at least the first 10 miles. Lots of root bumps, so much so that we got off the trail after only 10 miles and took the roads back. We had planned a much longer ride but it just wasn't any fun.

Bay County Riverwalk/Railtrail System

Bay County River Walk/Railtrail

June, 2019 by jcf3027

I’m very disappointed with the maintenance program for the Bay County rail trail/river walk. The surfaces are almost unridable in several areas for bicycles. Several areas are in desperate need of resurfacing. Some areas are like a washboard, some areas have rough seam cracks about every 20 ft. And some areas are just in need of a good cleaning. In the Marquette St area the ride surface is ridiculously rough. I’m afraid I’ll break my bike in this area. The sidewalk is to narrow and close to the buildings to safely ride a bicycle. I don’t like to complain this much but the trails are a beautiful system and if they aren’t maintained they’ll be lost to the same degree as the roads and highways in Michigan. If you take care of them, people will come to the area to ride, walk or just enjoy the trails. Please!
