Pleasant Ride

February, 2017 by ruthvkakogiannos

We rode from the parking lot across from McDonald's in Jonesville to Union St in Hillsdale and back this afternoon. There is a nice stretch through the woods and beside the St Joseph River in Jonesville and again in Hillsdale. Most of the route between the two towns parallel s M99 and is, therefore, not scenic. We still enjoyed the ride and plan to ride this trail again sometime starting at the lake in Hillsdale.

Lakelands Trail State Park

Good to terrible

November, 2016 by dje.ellsworth

From Hamburg this is a nice trail. Just to see it I rode the .4K east to the end from Hall road. There it is completely blocked with a barricade and dense trees and brush.

Going West it's nice asphalt just beginning to crack in some places. Lovely mix of scenery. Just past Pinckney you have to cross busy highway 36. At that point the trail is the mentioned limestone surface and relatively hard and not bumpy. I've been on worse pavement. There are a number of bridges and the transitions of this limestone part are excellent - better than the asphalt bridge transitions.

Unfortunately this part of the trail is only good to the Unadilla township line just before you cross highway 36 again.

I did continue to ride from the line the 300 or so yards to 36 but it was cautious going on my road bike. At 36 I looked down the trail and it was 2 track and seemed sandier yet. I wasn't even tempted to fight it and just turned around. Wider knobby rides would probably be okay.

With the scenery and central state access this has the potential to be one of the better touring trails in Michigan. Someone should push the legislature to putt priority to this trail.

Lakelands Trail State Park

A Horse Trail, Not A Bike Trail

October, 2016 by cliffordzang

First off, my wife and I have fitness bikes that we have outfitted to be able to handle crushed limestone trails and have done multiple limestone and gravel trails. This trail was much different. We started on the Stockbridge end and quickly realized that this was a different trail than what we were used to. It was a two-track for much of the beginning mileage. We were still able to make it a third of the way to Hamburg before turning around because my wife ran over a bucket handle that was hit by a lawnmower that had cleared some of the brush on the side. Luckily, she wasn't hurt and her bike's only damage was a bent front fender.

After I got home I checked the trail's page on the DNR website and found out that they listed the Stockbridge end as a horse trail and the Hamburg end as a bike trail. Unfortunately, I also found out that they are also only doing emergency maintenance on the trail and are seeking someone to take over the trail. That seems like it would make more sense to handle the maintenance part before discussing an expansion to the southwest (Jackson) like they are.

It makes me sad to give a poor review, because the scenery was very pretty, which prompted me to give it two stars instead of one.

Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail

There is now more of it!

October, 2016 by martinf

The southern portion psst the Portage Library has been extended past the end of the Shaver Road Bikeway all the way to Oosterhout Road. I rode the brand-new paved trail of about 2 miles length through the Eliason Nature Preserve this morning and it is amazingly scenic, smooth and undulating through mature forest, a roller bladers and bicyclist's dream. The connection to the Portage Creek Trail is not marked. Pick your way from the library past the Fire Station and City Hall across Centre Road to the side walk along the train tracks and strip mall to reach the Shaver Road section.

Smooth Riding/Poorly Marked

September, 2016 by jsexton30

Started out a little difficult with the inability to determine exactly where the trail started at Brady & Dickman. The trail was easily found but nothing marked for parking. Very industrial and concerned may get towed while riding. Ended up driving into Battle Creek and starting near the Underground Railroad monument. Was also told it connects to the trail that starts at Bridges Park but not sure how. Overall nice ride. Had lunch at Arcadia Brewery. Fun Day!

Falling Waters Trail

A well cared for trail

September, 2016 by chipper53

I rode this trail on a picture perfect September weekday. Obviously somebody cares about it, because there were numerous birdhouses, benches, mile markers. I only wished it was longer and perhaps a little more remote. But otherwise, this is an easy trip from Lansing and well worth it.

Kiwanis Trail (MI)

Rode bicycles through an open-air church service

September, 2016 by twotandemfamily

This is our family's second year riding this trail. We noted that a new parking lot has been installed at the northern terminus near Tecumseh, Michigan.

St. John's Lutheran Church, where the trail crosses Adrian Highway, is still providing a port-a-pot to travelers on the trail. We stopped when they were making cotton candy for a community fair in the church parking lot, and the folks were friendly.

A local pastor was preaching an open-air sermon in Trestle Park, with congregants sitting in lawn chairs along the trail. This makes the first time we've ever ridden bikes right through the middle of a church service! Even so, we received nothing but smiles. When we returned through the park, the congregation was carrying-in food for a picnic and grilling hamburgers.

Caution: heavy rains have eroded the old railroad bed in a couple places along the Raisin River, with very small areas of the pavement's edge breaking away into the deep ravine. The subsidences were marked with thin painted lines for repair.

Pumpkinvine Nature Trail

Parking in Shipshewana, Traffic in Middlebury

September, 2016 by twotandemfamily

We drove to the western terminus of the trail in Shipshewana, Indiana to begin our ride. The Pumpkinvine website recommends parking near the Pak-A-Sak convenience store/Marathon gas station, where there is plenty of parking for tourists in a large lot. The half mile ride on county road W 250 N to the beginning of the trail worried us; however, a paved Amish buggy lane is provided on both sides of the W 250 N outside of town, and we felt very safe on the road. It's essentially an Amish style 4 lanes wide "highway," with speed limited to 40 m.p.h.

We were also concerned about crossing State Route 13 in Middlebury; however, an excellent traffic light with crosswalk signals is installed, and we felt perfectly comfortable traversing the busy motorway with our children. And an underpass at US Route 20 eliminates any encounters with that road's heavy truck traffic.

Interestingly, we observed two advertisements directed to travelers on the trail, one listing a house for sale, another advertising stud services for a stallion with his pedigree listed. It is evident that this trail is handy and practical for local residents, which makes it even more enjoyable for a visitor.

Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park

Best trail

September, 2016 by demauch_tl

Rode this trail yesterday. It is the most beautiful trail I have ridden. This trail seems to have a lot of road crossings, but only a few had any real traffic. The limestone is packed down, almost like concrete in areas, and loosened up in a few areas, resembling sand. It could use some maintenance to fill a few holes in the trail, one of them jarring everyone in my group hard enough that we each checked to make sure we didn't blow a tire. The trail is paved through Bloomingdale. The trail is mostly shaded with a few open areas and cornfields, and as a previous review said, there are chipmunks everywhere. One just sat in the middle of the trail while I rode by. Traveling from Kalamazoo to South Haven, the trail slopes overall downhill. I would like to ride this trail again.

Lakelands Trail State Park

Not all of it fit for a road bike

September, 2016 by dotdash2

I ride this trail every couple of weeks. I start in Hamburg and ride through the Hamburg and Putnam sections. At Unidilla, the track is tough on a road bike, so that's where I turn around. It's a pity because the Eastern section of the trail is well maintained and it would be great to have a longer stretch. On the weekend there are hikers and baby strollers, but never to the point where we didn't seem to be able to share the trail happily. A beautiful solitary ride at other times in the week.

I saw they had marked the asphalt on the Hamburg section for repairs around potholes, etc, so that is great. And thanks to the volunteers who work on this trail.
