Today’s ride from Pewamo to Ionia was quite nice. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of trail in the shade, riding next to the Maple and Grand Rivers. The trail (both asphalt sections and crushed/compacted stone) were in good condition and pretty much straight and flat. In Ionia we enjoyed an ice cream cone at Cooks
I went for an amazing bike ride on the Mike Levine Lakelands Trail on August 8th, 2025, starting early in the morning. I parked at the Village Trailhead since the far east end was under construction for a new roundabout. Once I was set up and ready to go, I headed west and rode almost all the way to Pinckney.
The trail is absolutely beautiful — smooth, peaceful, and full of variety. One of the best parts is how it weaves between so many lakes, giving you gorgeous views on either side as you ride. The scenery was incredible that morning, with blue skies and scattered clouds creating a perfect backdrop for the ride.
I can’t wait to come back and explore further west on my next trip. Whether you’re a casual rider or looking to put in some miles, this trail offers a perfect mix of nature, calm, and beauty. Highly recommended!
Just an FYI that there is no parking at 84th Street and Patterson. The parking icon on the map is erroneous.
Nice, flat trail. Some parts are under construction/repair. But most is still rideable.
Parked at the Galesburg Augusta Primary school ¿ Meander from school to the trail ¿ Country like setting transitioned to a road-hugging trail¿ Riding alongside car traffic ¿ The trail was pretty smooth and the wildflowers were in bloom.
If you aren't going to use it to get on another trail, I just wouldn't bother, as there isn't anything to do or see here.
It's a great round trip, and it can open up to the sun & wind and other times plant life closes in for some shade.
While smooth, most of the trail is ballast & crushed stone, which for me made it very hard to keep my speed up.
I might consider skipping this one and looking elsewhere.
An enjoyable yet short trip.
The Grand River is common sight throughout the trail and and plant is lush and abundant and otherwise there isn't anything to see here but I would recommend it.
GMPT is a enjoyable but short trail that's full of tight twists and turns to the point riding a bike might be a bit iffy.
You might want to walk this one but I do recommend it.
The parts of the trail not on Ravine Rd seem great. Sure, the downtown route is a bit tricky but they have center lines to mark the bike path now along arcadia creek and the festival site, etc. My real complaint is they were not able to find a solution for nearly a couple of miles along Ravine Rd, other than a small segment on the property of Kalamazoo Public School Transportation, where someone on inline skates or a small bike could enjoy a small break from a narrow bike lane. Is that what they hoped they would be able to do all along that side, but only the Kalamazoo owned public transportation would agree to it, and the rest, you have to use a fairly narrow bike lane. The exception is that the last quarter mile or so, on the south side of Ravine before Douglas Ave, there is a really nice bike lane, with extra shoulder on the right of it. Why couldn't that have been extended further up? I have even used that against traffic when coming back before crossing over to the right side of the rd, because it is such a wider area than the bike lane on the north side of Ravine at that point. After all this time, it would have been nice if they found some options to improve that segment. The rest of it, I really like though!
