Kalamazoo River Valley Trail

Nice Ride

September, 2020 by seeyajohn

I rode the KRV from D Avenue to Galesburg and back on a recumbent bike. The most interesting parts of the trail are at the two ends. The trail undulates through wooded areas in both cases, but the D Avenue end is very hilly. The trail is asphalt throughout and mostly smooth. There are several highway crossings that require care. The part of the trail near downtown Kalamazoo has one underpass that is best traversed on foot due to sandy dirt on the trail. This section likely is unpassable after a heavy rain.

As the trail heads east there is a section that runs through a park along the river. But then the trail emerges onto a course along route 96 and heads into Comstock. The short ride through Comstock calls for care with turning traffic going into businesses. East of Comstock is a nice brief ride through a park before again returning to route 96. The final section of the trail is a very nice ride through a park into Galesburg.

Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park

Outstanding if it were ashphalt

September, 2020 by seeyajohn

This would be a great trail if it were asphalt. As it is it is a nice ride with considerable shade. I rode the trail on my recumbent from the trailhead at Kalamazoo to the small community of Kendall. Since it is a rails-to-trails course, there are no major hills on the trail. However there is generally a slight grade favoring eastbound riders.

The crushed gravel surface is mostly smooth riding with only a couple of spots where the gravel is loose and one must be extra careful. The wooded ride was enjoyable and worth repeating. I hope to try the trail from the other end at South Haven soon.

Upper Macatawa Greenway Trail

Beautiful (albeit short) trail that is easy to get to from Zeeland

August, 2020 by rothecreations

Not every trail may be worth the time to ride, but this one is worth coming out and checking out for sure.

If you dare attempt the overlapping segment on Strava, note there are a lot of blind spots. Seems like an area ripe for an accident between a biker and someone taking a walk.

Good ride experience

The ride is very enjoyable. It is more scenery at the Nile town area along the river. There are quite a few benches along the trial just in case you want to sit down for short break.

North Bank Trail - Connection to Spoonville and Phase 2

August, 2020 by lukasevan

Phase 2 of the NBT was just completed in July 2020. One can now ride a regional paved trail from Nunica to the beaches of Grand Haven without riding on a road (10-12 miles). The North Bank Trail will connect to Phase 2 of the Spoonville Trail that is currently under construction and offer a non-motorized route to the south side of the Grand River. The NBT is located mostly in attractive rural landscapes but conveniently connects into local business districts.

Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park

perfect day

August, 2020 by amysteinback

Even after a night of rain, the trail was hardly wet. This is truly one of most well maintained trails. We started in South Haven just off the Blue Star highway and ended in Kalamazoo. The trail is perfectly shaded with some nice breaks of farmland and wildflowers. Trail is mostly flat with some gradual inclines in places. We stopped in Bloomingdale for some air in the tires and a few other points alone the trail. We really loved the area near Mentha. The whole trail was very well marked and as two women, we felt safe. We loved stopping to read all of the historical markers. Really a great trail!

Interurban Trail (Kent County)

Almost like two different trails

July, 2020 by quilterbon

This trail is in two sections. The two sections are connected by riding on well-marked Buchanan Ave to Crown St to Walton Ave and a short section of 50th St.

From just north of 44th St to just south of 36th St it has been redone and is nice and smooth and maintained. The section from Kelloggsville Park just south of 50th St southward is really bumpy and not well maintained. It is also very hard to cross 54th St at certain times of the day. I wish the south section would get resurfaced as it is a great almost connector to the M6 trail. The East West trail takes off east from the Kelloggsville Park parking area.

North Bank Trail

Where does it go?

July, 2020 by stevej371

Very nice new trail from 144th St. all the way to Nunica.
At the trailhead in Nunica, there is a sign pointing south for the Spoonville Trail. There is no trail, shoulder, sidewalk or markings for this. Where does it join the Spoonville??

Lakeshore Connector Path

Tunnel Park to Kirk Park and back - beaches were lovely!

July, 2020 by trails88_tl

Started at Tunnel Park and rode approx 11 miles north to Kirk Park. Enjoyed a packed lunch and a little time on the beach. Then turned around and came back.

Note that the trail is a more akin to a sidewalk along a residential street. We rode mountain bikes on the path, but every person on a road bike opted for the road. The trail was pretty hilly, especially between Port Sheldon and Coswell street. The bridge over Coswell street does not have a dedicated/separate bike path so we walked our bikes on the shoulder. It was a little unnerving so on return trip, routed through a residential neighborhood to avoid the bridge.

Both parks had restrooms, vending machines, bike racks, and beach access and made for very nice starting and stopping points.
