Let me recreate our ride yesterday on the north edge of Kansas City. It began in Riverside which we found easily (that usually doesn’t happen. It takes several sweeps and turnarounds.) But this one…easy! The problem…the trail went three directions. The signs were not clear. First try ended after a mile. Here’s the turnaround. Back at the car I asked a skateboarder if he knew which direction to go. Have you ever called a skateboarder Mister? Of course he had no idea but pointed to one he had seen bikers on. We took off. Beautiful cement trail to a nice riverside park. Nope not the trail we were looking for. Oh look here’s the casino. We followed that direction. Found the river and a beautiful skyline view but not right yet. We turned around and took the third trail. Here it is! Beautiful shaded cement trail beside a small creek. We saw some squirrels, heard some birds and then a deer. We were running out of time when the promised small waterfall showed up. On our way back we ran into a man walking and reading a book!!! Now that’s the way to hike!! We did not get to finish the trail. Maybe next time. Really nice!
This was a really nice trail. We wonder how they decided to cement part and leave some crushed limestone, but it didn't bother the ride at all. Would not want to do it right after a rain though because of the gravel. It might be slippery and dirty. On the beautiful day we went we maintained our pace on the entire trail...well, as far as we could ride. It was closed about half way through. Looked like maybe they had done more cement. We rode 13 miles from the Stadium trailhead to the closure. Lots of walkers and bikers but not so many that it bothered. We saw one main pushing his cat in a stroller! Fun morning ride. One e-bike passed us at about 28 mph. He was not safe for the rest of us. We ride e-bikes at about 14 miles an hour. Lots of hills so we were glad we had the extra power.
The bridge on the trail between Hwy 78 trail head & Bunchu Rd is finally completed. Rode that section today for the first time in a couple years!! Yeah!
We rode our bikes on the trail today and we were so impressed! We drove out from southern Overland Park to ride it. We loved that it is very well maintained and the scenery is gorgeous! It's an amazing 16 ish mile ride. Prepare for some hills and bring plenty of water! I can't wait to come back in the fall when the leaves turn. We did have trouble finding the start point but once we did we realized it was right there across from the Argosy Hotel check in area.
We did an amazing ride from Rantoul to Vassar, 32 miles, stayed overnight at the Lamont Hill Resort. We rode back the next day. The trail is beautiful but very rustic with loose rocks and sticks all around. It's relatively flat so be prepared to pedal the entire ride. There is no water source or a good restroom from Ottawa to Vassar. Bring lots of water and don't be afraid of doing your "business" off the side of the trail. We wanted to start the adventure in Osawatomie but we didn't want to deal with the detour so we parked in Rantoul. No issues with parking overall at the trailhead in Rantoul.
Attempted a two day ride. First day ride from Ottawa to Osawatomie and back. Trail was muddy in spots . Lots of sticks and small branches. Trail is just two tracks in most places with loose material in middle. Rained on way back. Songbirds were incredible. Especially cardinals!! This section is tree lined. Then ride west from Ottawa to Pomona and back. Trail is much better condition and a bit more open. Second goal was to ride from Osage City west to Bushong and back. Delayed start due to thunderstorms. Trail west from Osage City was pretty good but littered with sticks and leaves from recent storm. A Moved a couple of trees off the trail At the third tree that was too big to move I turned around and went back. Only made it 5 miles.
My wife and I rode this trail! It was beautiful!
My wife and I rode this trail. We both really enjoyed it!
It was a warm (82 degrees) March day with light winds when we rode from Osage City to Vassar and back, a total of 25 miles. We parked at the 5th Street trailhead in Osage City. Be sure to park on the north side of this little city park so that you have direct access to the wide, paved trail that takes you east. Bathrooms with flush toilets were available. Once out of town, the trail is wide (we rode two abreast) with a firm base and fine gravel. Sticks littered some areas of the trail. We picked up several goat head thorns but suffered no flats. This section of the trail mostly cuts through pasture and broke ground typical of the eastern edge of the Flint Hills. We enjoyed the scenery. The trailhead at Vassar offers only parking; there are no bathrooms, no water, no picnic tables, etc. Smoke from a number of prescribed burns was visible in the distance but none was near enough to the trail to affect us. This activity is something to be aware of in early spring; the smoke from one of these burns can be quite thick so you probably wouldn’t want ride through it. Overall, a great section of trail to ride; five stars!
Flint Hills Park Trail. It was a beautiful February day; 68 degrees! Started @ Orlis Cox Sports Complex in Ottawa. Rode to Pomona and back; 21 miles round trip. This section of the trail passes through farmland (broke ground) and treed areas, alternately. Some of the trail is next to an active rail line. One safety-engineered highway crossing. Well-maintained trail; kudos to the maintenance team. Wide trail; rode side-by-side, which we enjoy. Fine gravel surface. Some leaves and sticks on the trail in spots. Rail trail; no steep grades. Fantastic bridges; new, clean, wide, perfect surface! Trail head in Pomona had lots of parking and a unisex outhouse in excellent condition. To the people who rode bikes or horses on the trail when it was wet/soft - shame on you. In summary, a great ride; We will definitely ride this section again in the future! 5 stars.
We rode from the North Lawrence parking area (which is tricky to find) to the east end of the levee trail. Then from there we rode to the River Front parking area before returning to our starting point. There were porta potties at each trailhead. The trail surface is compacted gravel. The wide trail is elevated above the surrounding area which enhances the view but which also gives you more exposure to the wind. The trail crosses under the Massachusetts street bridge. We enjoyed the east portion of the trail in particular because we had river forest on one side and farm fields on the other. We plan to ride this trail again in the future.
