Takes you through a nice lake with a great boardwalk. The section that passes by the water treatment facility was a bit smelly, but mostly a good trail.
The paved portions of this trail are a nice ride although at times you may need to 'portage' over (instead of under) the bridges at Van Dyke Ave, Riverland and M-53 due to standing water beneath.
North of M-59 you pass ballfields and go through a tunnel then watch on your right (east) side for a dirt path heading up a slight hill. This leads to a one-way bike/mountain bike trail which winds through the woods. There is good signage as you cross a few other trails. Good river views and surprisingly pretty views of the Clinton-Kalamazoo canal flowing by.
This is mostly a flat stretch until you reach Riverbends Park. Turn around here and take the first right (west) for a more challenging return ride. You can choose between green, blue (one) and yellow trail options along this stretch which serpentines and switch backs alongside the river. There are several built features on this stretch including log jumps, whoop di doos etc but all can be avoided by going around if you choose. There are a few tighter tree squeezes and a couple descents and climbs that could have you off your bike so take care the first time through.
Near the end of this SSE route you can easily loop back to the first (north north west bound) trail so this area is convenient if you'd like to do several 'laps' and make your visit most worthwhile.
Trail surface is primarily packed dirt with a few rocks, minimal sand and of course hundreds of roots!
At 60 years old I am not a 'rock-hopper' nor jumper so this trail is a very nice option where I can challenge myself with speed and trying not to put a foot down while staying safe.
I've only been on this trail during weekdays when very few people are around. Most folks are on the paved portions so you may have these trails mostly to yourself! As always, be on the lookout for hikers and 'wrong direction' riders.
