Swatara Rail-Trail

Beautiful trail but with problems

February, 2017 by merlinsolis

We decided to ride on Super Bowl Sunday and check out this trail. We started from the Lickdale trailhead. We had two issues right from the beginning. First the trail isn't marked and we went the wrong way about 3/4 of a mile into a KOA campground. Once we hit the right direction, we encountered very large limestone, with the bikes sliding all over the place. After a mile, we hit crushed stone, which was great, then an old abandoned paved road. We could have used 3 different tires on this trip. Then at the halfway point the trail allows horses. It was all chewed up, very bumpy and not so much fun dodging the horse petunias on the trail and bridges! This could be a great trail if it were finished properly and horses were restricted to one side of the trail, said leaving part of the path smooth. The trail has some beautiful scenery and there was ice on the creek. The scenery will bring us back but the state of PA should/must do better to make this trail safer and to facilitate maximum enjoyment and not just survival. I beginning. The trailhead map doesn't indicate the direction of the trail. We went right and in 3/4 of a mile ended up in a campground. Once we got squared away we had our second issue. The state of PA put down large limestone on the trail. It was very dan

Blue Marsh Lake Multi-Use Trail

Circumnavigate entire lake in winter

February, 2017 by unklala

My daughter and I have hiked the entire lake, using the shore line thos winter. This is only possible because the Army Corps of Eng. lowers the lake every winter for flood control. We did it in 3 different sections (Thank goodness for Google maps) using some sections of trail, bridges to traverse areas interrupting the shoreline. Its a seasonal treat to hike the shoreline.

Lehigh and New England Trail

Parking scam

February, 2017 by adka

At the trailhead there is a warning sign that you run the risk of having your car towed, This will happen even if you park on the side of the road. If your tires touch the crushed stone you are taking a great risk. Avoid parking at the trailhead or the trail itself; it is not that great anyway.

Springlawn Trail

Short but bucolic

February, 2017 by pjdoehring

Walked the trail this past weekend with my daughter in her special needs Wike stroller and with her puppy and in the occasional snow squall at dusk (see pix). And I biked it today. Very quiet and shaded trail through the woods, bordering farmer's fields and sometimes the Big Elk Creek Creek, passing some ruins of of stone houses. There is space for a couple of cars to park right at the trailhead at the north end, but at the south end, there is only a muddy pull off maybe for one car 50 yards up the road. And if you have a large stroller be prepared to lift it over the gate. For biking, you can create a nice loop by turning east on Strickersville Rd at the south end, and then turning left onto Mount Olivet rd, which is closed to car traffic for now. Then you make your way back to the north trailhead via Walker and Peacedale roads and then Rt. 841 - 6 miles total.

Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail-Trail

My Home Trail

January, 2017 by jwells1985_tl

Well done trail that, when completed, will be an excellent destination trail. Paved for about 3 miles from downtown Ephrata. Lighted (lit didn't look right)for the first 2.5 of those miles. On a nice weekend day expect to see lots of user. Easy to connect to the Warwick section on back roads. We've been using this abandoned rail line for over 30 years and are excited each time a new section has been improved. Recently checked out the bridge section which is the final hurdle only to have two white tail deer dart across the trail in front of us. Anxiously looking forward to the day I can do a night ride from Ephrata to Lititz and back without being on the road at all.

Chester Valley Trail

Awesome Trail

This trail is wide and paved. There are several stores to stop at for a break. At some point during your activities on this trail, you will come across dear. They are rarely on the trail and more so in the nearby woods. I love this trail. It's not congested like the Schuylkill River Trail. I have visited this trail more than any other trail in PA, NJ, DE, and MD.

Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail-Trail

two new segments are now open!

December, 2016 by trailkeeper

Two segments of the trail have recently been completed. (as of 12/28/2016).
Warwick Township added 5200 ft. going east from East Newport road to Picnic Woods road.(* NOte, East Newport road is a very busy road! Flashing lights have been installed at the crossing, but use caution!)
On the other end, an additional 2000ft. have been completed from the Akron Borough line to Millway road in Ephrata Township.
Warwick Township anticipates completing the segment from Picnic Woods road to Old Rothsville road by the end of 2017. The Final segment from Rothsville road to Millway road, which requires redecking and fencing the bridge over the Cocalico Creek is expected to be completed in 2018.

Exeter Scenic River Trail

Pleasant surprise!

December, 2016 by cfessett

I'd grown up in Gibraltar (1970's) and still live in the area. I'd never known about this trail until a friend had recently told me about it.

Took my first ride on it this past Friday. Made it as far as the Rt. 422 overpass, but ran out of daylight. Was a very pleasant cruise. Trail is well maintained (I'm the leader of the French Creek State Park trail maintenance crew). I'm really looking forward to this trail being connected to the SRT and Neversink Mt. trails.

I'm interested in the pre-history of this trail. Does anyone know if this trail was formerly a road or railroad bed? I've noticed the abutments for a bridge that used to cross over to Old River Road on the Gibraltar side of the river. The abutments indicate that the bridge went over the present trail, so that makes me wonder if the trail was formerly a rail bed. Perhaps it was the original rail bed of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (precursor of the Reading RR)

Sorry for the long-winded "review", but I'm not sure how else to communicate with others about my questions. If there's a better forum for me to have these discussions, then please direct me to it. Thanks!

Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail-Trail

Sat. Dec. 10th 2016

From downtown Ephrata to Akron and return.

Walked as part of a 'Volksmarch'. Trail is well done and a bit longer than the current map indicates. Lighted of night time use. Open 6AM to 11PM. I'm planning on a night bike ride next spring.

There are side detours that should be considered. Easy to make a loop in Akron to connect Lloyd H Roland Memorial Park 'East' of the trail on Main Street. Ephrata Cloister is located 'West' of the Ephrata trailhead with numerous restaurants in the downtown area.

Wyomissing Creek Trail

Lovely Stroll in Wyomissing

November, 2016 by cynthiaswankvb

This is a lovely little walk in the heart of Wyomissing. When we walked there in the late afternoon, there weren't many other folks along the trail. We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves, which made it even more lovely.

Gorgeous River Views

November, 2016 by cynthiaswankvb

If you're a River Girl like me, you'll really appreciate the miles of gorgeous views as you walk out & back this trail, no matter how far you decide to go. Though there can be a lovely breeze off of the water, there is no shade along this path, so take special care on hot, sunny days.
