Stavich Bicycle Trail

Good for an ”easy” ride

August, 2019 by jacki.skinner

I've ridden this trail several times. This was the first time I've been able to go to end to end without some kind of obstruction or construction. It's a relaxing trail, but if you go on a road bike - ride with caution on the Ohio portion. It will absolutely blow out a tire if you're not paying attention.

Montour Trail

Love this trail

August, 2019 by jimmyvegasrox

I can’t believe this trail goes right through my town!
As a matter of fact, it is one of the starting sections on the route.
Been riding it for about 10 years now but only rode short distances in the past.
Got into to going further the last three years.
I just did my 3rd annual trip from Bethel Park to the Coraopolis end yesterday. Total trip was 74 miles!
What a blast. Beautiful scenery everywhere! A couple bike shops and cafe’s along the way. Lots of portable restrooms along the way as well as...(thank God) water fountains. I had brought two water bottles with me but on the way back, I tend to need much more h2o!
Lots of rest areas, benches and picnic tables too!
I also love how some people take care of specific sections of the trail and make it very personal.
My goal next year is to head the other direction by staritng in Bethel Park and heading towards Maryland.

Stavich Bicycle Trail

Nice ride

August, 2019 by jimmyvegasrox_tl

I was in the Beaver County area for about a week. I new of some local areas to ride (I had my bike with me in case I had a chance to get out and ride) I rode a couple areas which were nice but not too long.
I found the TrailLink app and discovered so many trails! The Stavich trail was about 20 miles away but looked really fun.
I started on the Pa side and really enjoyed it.
Loved that there was a working railroad right beside the trail! Several trains went by as I was riding. Lots of little wood bridges to ride over. Nice creeks, wildlife and tree cover.
Heading in to the Ohio side did get a little bumpy but reading the reviews ahead of time really helped me prepare for it. Knowing ahead made it a non issue.
The only thing that I would have liked to seen was more portable toilets.
I don’t believe I saw any to be honest.
Anyway, marked that in down as “completed”!

Panhandle Trail

Water

August, 2019 by gldst123_tl

I like riding the Panhandle trail nice black top from Washington county to WV. The lack of water is something I think needs to be looked into at some point. The water fountains that are there already are not working at mile 0 and 4.5 with the one at 5.5 just working enough to get some water. Just past the brewery there is a very rough spot. Otherwise the trail is great to ride. The WV side has been repaved this year so it's nice to ride that section now.

Bucket List

July, 2019 by ahaus

A definite on your bucket list! We rode the GAP/C&O from Pittsburgh to Georgetown. If you aren't a camper, the C&O requires thought and planning on where to stay. Riding both gives you a great perspective on different trails. When on the C&O, make sure you jump over to the Western Maryland Rail Trail for 22 miles, beautiful trail and a nice break from ruts and sticks (and turtles). Rode in late July, not many puddles.

Panhandle Trail

Panhandle trail oakdale pa

July, 2019 by maryandjim

My husband and I usually ride on the panhandle trail weekly and today when entering at the oakdale entrance i was surprised how bad that section of the trail has become. I witnessed a few riders getting off their bikes and walking through this section. I did the same on the way back. It just needs to be graded and more gravel spread around
I think I'll start my ride in McDonald until this is remedied

Five Star Trail

Good urban trail

A variety of material on the trail. Mostly crushed stone. Thicker in a few areas, so a bit more challenging in those spots. Pleasant easy ride. Shared with lots of walkers, with and without dogs. Good people in the trail.

Great Trail for bike packing

July, 2019 by deborah.addy_tl

We rode the trail with camping gear and stayed at many of the free trail camping locations. I wish there were more of them especially near the southern end of the trail. There you have to pay for camping but it isn't much and the places are very nice. The trail is beautiful and shaded once you get south of McKeesport, North of that you go through a lot of urban and industrial area. It gets a little difficult to follow the trail through Pittsburgh near downtown. The area between Connelsville and Ohiopyle is probably the most scenic but I would suggest doing it early in the morning and on a weekday. It can get pretty busy on a weekend. The ride down the mountain into Cumberland is great if you are southbound. The ride up the mountain is strenuous if you are northbound. We have done it both ways. Cumberland has a great downtown area.

Moraine State Park Bike Trail

June 2019 Ride

July, 2019 by vicki1960

Parked at the lot where the bike rental is and rode out to the end of the trail at the Nature Center. Trail passes picnic areas, several parking lots and a public beach. Park restrooms along the trail.
Trail is asphalt paved in very good condition but has several bends and small hills. Makes for a nice challenge.
On weekends the trail can be a bit crowded the first few miles from the bike rental. Go farther out, less people.
Out and back trail, not a loop. Great state park trail features tree shaded sections and open sections.

Westmoreland Heritage Trail

3.3 More Miles of Trail

July, 2019 by dmorrison11

I was pleasantly surprised to find that an additional 3.3 miles of trail has been opened from Murrysville to Export. Mostly crushed limestone with about a quarter mile of blacktop. Uphill grade to Export but certainly not crazy steep. It is nice to see improvements to this trail. It look like it will take about another 3.5 miles to connect Export to Delmont. Won’t that be nice!

Ghost Town Trail

Wonderful Ride

June, 2019 by mwitkowskismith

I would ride this trail again! My husband & I ride rail trails all around PA & as far as we can drive from our home in Philadelphia. This is one of the nicest trails. In addition to the wonderful history of 19th century mining, the trail is well maintained with clean & frequent bathrooms, benches & picnic shelters. Yes, there is a bit of a hill between Vintondale & Nanty Glo, but that is part of the fun. I want to give a thank you to Cambria & Indiana counties for their great work in maintaining this trail.
