Western Maryland Rail Trail

WMRT 04-30-17

May, 2017 by wreinsel

Beautiful Day! Started about 10:30am and rode from the Hancock parking lot just East of Hancock. It was cloudy and 75 degrees. Rode to the end of the trail and back ~ 25 miles in under 2 hours. This trail is very flat. We met a trail monitor (CPA) and he gave us many good tips. Then we grabbed more food at our car and continued 9.5 miles or so to Mile 0. It was sunny by then and the only place to buy water is in Hancock. There is no water on the trail. Completed the 18.5 mile loop in about 90 minutes. Saw two emergency vehicles coming up the trail towards us with bikes on top - hope everyone is ok. The is a super flat and nice trail. They only thing I would recommend is to remove the larger sticks since there were some on the trail. Otherwise very friendly and nice people and great day. We also stopped at the way out at the Blue Goose (by car) for snacks. Pretty touristy.

Black Hill Trail

Very crowded on weekends

April, 2017 by sastudillo777

For biking it is very hilly. There are a lot of people on the trails. It is hard to park since it is a very popular park. if you like a leisurely pace then this place is good for you. If you are a hardcore biker that wants to race, this is not the place for you.

Improvements to Trail!

April, 2017 by jencromer

I did this trail exactly one year ago (see the review a Tale of Two Trails). When I returned earlier this weekend, I discovered a brand new bridge over Fogelsanger Road. Plus, the section that was unimproved last year is now completely paved all the way to Earl Street. As I understand it, a new bridge will soon open in Newville over Big Spring Road as well. Major kudos to the CVRTC!

Western Maryland Rail Trail

Nice

April, 2017 by mfkoch59

This is a beautiful trail and a pleasant bike ride. I’ve ridden several bike trails and paths and this is by far my favorite. There are a few tree root bumps in a few spots that are in need of grinding down at this point, but nothing serious, just annoying. You’ll probably see an occasional rabbit, squirrel or deer along the way. The shade makes it a little more comfortable in the summer. Buddy Lou’s in Hancock is great stop for lunch, as are other restaurants there.
Bikers may encounter an occasional pedestrian (runner) that does not want to follow the rules. ALL users of the trail are supposed to stay to the right. DoNR says stay to the right. That’s true for every trail I’ve hiked on or ridden on, including the C&O. BUT, some runners feel that because pedestrians have the right of way they can run in any direction they want. It may be safer to run on the left facing traffic on the street but not so on the trail. Be courteous (and safe), stay to the right.

Never been here but will definitely be back. Extremely beautiful area. Clean except for those that leave their trash behind. If you like quiet and tranquility it's a must visit.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

Nice Trail

March, 2017 by jackybob

We started in Newville and rode the trail southwest to just outside of Shippensburg and back. It is noted that the depiction of the trail on the traillink map is not entirely accurate. The actual trail stops along side McFarland Street in Newville and at Shippensburg Township Park just outside of Shippensburg. Also, there is parking on both ends of the trail although not indicated on the map. As for the trail itself, we found it to be in very good condition and actually considered it to be a fast trail. If you like the Buffalo Valley trail between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg, you'll probably enjoy this trail as well. Also, it appears that they are currently working to extend the trail on both ends.

Western Maryland Rail Trail

Definitely Worth the Drive

March, 2017 by jackybob

This trail is about 3 hours south of where we live, but the promise of 70 degree temperatures after 3 months of winter was just too much to pass up. So we packed up and hit the road early on a Saturday morning to drive down and check it out. We were not disappointed. The asphalt surface, shallow incline and mild temperature made for a very enjoyable ride and our many thanks go out to those responsible for the creation and maintenance of this trail. This is a very nice trail. Just a quick heads up regarding parking. We started on the east end of the trail and by the time we finished our ride the parking lot was completely full with vehicles overflowing onto the grass.

4.5 stars

February, 2017 by tim.patz

Starting at Brillhart, south is a very nice run, including tunnel. I am sure fall is spectacular time to be on this trail.
North is likewise a nice run, especially passing the golf course area.
After that is the salvage yard, which is an interesting spectacle.
If the chance, definitely walk, run, bike this beautiful trail.

Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail

Extremely Muddy & Difficult to Ride

February, 2017 by crazycastro007

I have ridden this trail for over 10 years now and I have never been so disappointed as this time. I have noticed in the last couple of years the MD section of it has gotten really bad. I had many times where the mud was so bad that I could barely pedal my bike. I had multiple times where I almost fell over. I even tried to ride on the side of the trail but it did not help. Even the people walking the trail were going around the muddy spots. I'm pretty sure it has not rained very much so I cannot understand the condition of the trail. My In-Laws live in York and I like to ride the whole trail. However, I will be skipping MD next time and riding in PA instead. The PA section is always very well maintained so I cannot understand why there is such a difference between the two. Could someone please explain this to me. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Awesome, and really fun to jog!

January, 2017 by isaacwathieu

I went on a 11 mile run through swains lock and it was so fun, you would occasionally see other runners but not too much. I also enjoyed the scenery around me. It is mostly dried dirt but has some mud. Really great if you are going with family members.
