Western Maryland Rail Trail

Just far enough from the cities!

September, 2017 by rmjonesjr

This wonderful trail is just far enough from the heavily populated Baltimore/Washington area that it is never crowded. Even on "busy" weekends you'll pass just a few other friendly folks who enjoy biking enough to make the trek to Hancock. For us "weird" recumbent trike riders there are a few teeth rattling tree roots pushing up the asphalt in places. Regular bikes with even modest suspension or fat tires will barely notice them. Enjoy this wonderful gem of a trail!

I have ridden this path several times. There are many hills and some come straight down to a stop to cross the road. After which, you then pedal straight up hill. However, the path is quite do-able. There are two treats for you on this ride - 1) a stop at Black Dog Coffee and at the Martinsburg end, you can cross the highway (carefully) to find the Berkeley County Human Society and visit with the pooches! Enjoy and cycle safe!

Pleasantly Surprised

September, 2017 by nightshine1

I was hesitant to ride on crushed stone, as I never had before, and prefer asphalt. Today, I rode between York and just past Glen Rock. What a great trail! The inclines are easy. The crossings are few. The trail is very well maintained.

I highly recommend this trail to anyone.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

Flat, asphalt surface, scenic

September, 2017 by kirkdw

Have been on this trail twice this summer, from Newville all the way to Shippensburg. A great trail, well-kept up and scenic. Lots of Amish on bikes and carriages (I saw my first Amish convoy!). Park about 1 mile from Shippensburg end is a great place for a rest or lunch break. Nicely kept up bathrooms.

Western Maryland Rail Trail

wonderful path but a little noisy

September, 2017 by kent6

This is an excellent trail. Smooth pavement. Places to stop along the way for snacks or restaurants. Good scene scenery along the c&o canal. and can see the river in places. But the eastern end is next to highway 70 is is pretty noisy.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

Trail etiquette and safety

August, 2017 by jbkunklemam

Walk the trail daily. Great trail, but I have noticed that with the increase in traffic, many bikers pass walkers at fairly high speeds and with no warning. Bikers please let walkers know you are passing. Also, there is a sign on the new bridge stating that bikers are to dismount if there are pedestrians on the bridge. I don't think most are aware of this. Not a real issue on a dry bridge, but could be when the bridge is wet, as the wood is very slippy.

We did the Rudy trail round trip north of York on Aug 6 and a portion south to the Howard tunnel starting at Brillhart station that same day.Today, Aug 27, we started at Hanover Junction and turned around at the York College. Next season, we will bike south from Glen Rock towards and thru the towns of Railroad and New Freedom. Joe Nolt. Lanc. Pa

Great for families with small children

August, 2017 by jak.sheeder6913

We have a large family(6) with ages ranging from 2-11,this is one of the best trails we've come across. Easily accessible with a side by side double stroller(some trails we've had to stop and fold our stroller to access hiking areas),flat terrain, keep an eye out for snakes! This is our favorite place to blow of some energy safely,it's well maintained and a gorgeous hike.

H&BT Rail Trail on a Tandem

August, 2017 by billajackson

We took some time out to do this trail on a drive from Philadelphia to Ohio. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Bedford, so the drive to Hopewell was about 30 minutes. The drive there was beautiful on this mid-summer morning. With a little bit of effort and following the bike path signs, we made our way to the old Hopewell train station and parked. As we were getting our tandem bike ready, some local ladies stopped by and were able to point us in the correct direction to Tatesville.

When leaving Hopewell, you are on the main road just long enough to cross a small bridge, then you are on the gravel trail. It starts out as a shared road, but we only encountered one slow moving car. The gravel in this section is larger, and there are areas with potholes, so you need to watch were you ride. Here the trail is partially shaded and there are nice views of the river, meadows and the rising hills.

After passing through a camping area, the trail no longer allowed cars, and the gravel got much smaller and the potholes went away. But the gravel was not hard packed and in some places bogs down your tires. We saw mostly local riders on hybrids and a pair on fat bikes, as well as some walkers.

Near Cypher there is a beautiful bridge/river crossing followed by a narrow gorge. Pause here for some time to take in the view. From there the trail starts a long slow steady incline. This, combined with the thick, small grained gravel, can be challenging. There are a couple of outhouse/restrooms along the trail between Hopewell and Tatesville.

This is a beautiful trail. Hats off to local organizations and government who helped create it. I would only suggest, if possible, to pack down the small gravel, and maybe add some directional signs (like in Hopewell) and maybe some mile markers noting the distances to the next landmarks.

We will be back again to ride the length of this trail and get to parts we missed, though we will probably come back with wider knobby tires.

Heritage Rail Trail County Park

Excellent, Fun Trail

July, 2017 by merlinsolis

We have ridden the Heritage and Torrey Brown. The Heritage is slightly uphill (I didn't notice it but my wife did) from York (Brillhart trail head) to New Freedom and then downhill to the end of the line. The PA side of the trail is great. The MD side not so great. There are numerous small towns on the PA side that offer food, drink and a place to rest. One home placed an ice chest on the trail offering free bottles of water! You might want to slow down or take a small flashlight for the Howard tunnel...it's a little rough in there and dark. Brillhart had a toilet facility and there were rest benches all along the route. I loved the old buildings and old train signals. There is a lot of crossing back and forth across the tracks but they are all paved and easy to negotiate. The New Freedom train was operating and we rode faster than the train. Based on the completely deteriorated condition of the ties, I would not ride the train. It looks like an accident waiting to happen. I'm surprised they haven't been shut down for safety reasons. Back to the trail. It is great. We rode it on an overcast Friday morning and the traffic on the trail was very light. Speaking of traffic, other than in one significant town we never had to stop for vehicular traffic. Go and have a great time.
