Lower Trail

Great trail, great ride!

June, 2017 by bethahinton

So much has been written about this wonderful trail, and our experience was the same. One of our favorite things was that the trail was mostly shaded, making it possible/comfortable to ride on a warmer day. The surface was well cared for, and the friendly maintenance crews were mowing while we were there. It was great to see the many benches and bird shelters located all along the trail. We came from approximately two hours away, and consider ourselves lucky that the trail is one of our "local" options!

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park

An Amazing Experience

June, 2017 by brendan.ms

A friend and I just recently finished this trail. It was an amazing ride with plenty to see along the route. The trail was very well maintained with the grass having been recently mowed and some sections of the trail having been repaved.

We completed this trail in 4 days going from Cumberland to DC; I was quite surprised at how empty the trail was, so if you want a nice peaceful ride and learn some historic facts about the area this is a great trail for you. There are plenty of free camping spots along the route as well as port-a-potties (not the best well kept many had wasp nests inside). Also their are water pumps along the route to stop and refill so you do not need to carry too much water.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

trail improvements at both ends

June, 2017 by bikerbabe69

The trail has now been extended another mile or so into Shippensburg past the park, crosses a new bridge (the old hillside shortcut to Ship is still visible) and continues as a paved pathway adjacent to the university campus. The trail currently dead ends on a side street with no apparent signage, but it appears that restrooms and a parking area are under construction there. At the other end in Newville, a metal bridge was added and the trail continues to Rt 233, although there is no access there. Hopefully this is the start of the planned extension to Carlisle.

Don't get on at Harpers Ferry!

May, 2017 by suemer47

We stopped at Harpers Ferry and were told by at least 3 park rangers that all you have to do is put your bikes on the bus at the Visitors Center ...cross the bridge and get on the trail. None of those people told us that when you cross the bridge there is a spiral staircase and about 40 metal stairs you have to carry your bike down to get on the trail. It was not fun and very dangerous. Luckily a few nice strong young men carried our bikes. The trail at the bottom of the stairs was nice, but very muddy. All I could think of was how are we gonna get our bikes back up the stairs. When I mentioned this to the business owners in Harpers Ferry, they all said yes, you need to complain to the park service. No where on any of the trail information is this problem listed.

WMRT 04-30-17

May, 2017 by wreinsel

Beautiful Day! Started about 10:30am and rode from the Hancock parking lot just East of Hancock. It was cloudy and 75 degrees. Rode to the end of the trail and back ~ 25 miles in under 2 hours. This trail is very flat. We met a trail monitor (CPA) and he gave us many good tips. Then we grabbed more food at our car and continued 9.5 miles or so to Mile 0. It was sunny by then and the only place to buy water is in Hancock. There is no water on the trail. Completed the 18.5 mile loop in about 90 minutes. Saw two emergency vehicles coming up the trail towards us with bikes on top - hope everyone is ok. The is a super flat and nice trail. They only thing I would recommend is to remove the larger sticks since there were some on the trail. Otherwise very friendly and nice people and great day. We also stopped at the way out at the Blue Goose (by car) for snacks. Pretty touristy.

Improvements to Trail!

April, 2017 by jencromer

I did this trail exactly one year ago (see the review a Tale of Two Trails). When I returned earlier this weekend, I discovered a brand new bridge over Fogelsanger Road. Plus, the section that was unimproved last year is now completely paved all the way to Earl Street. As I understand it, a new bridge will soon open in Newville over Big Spring Road as well. Major kudos to the CVRTC!

Western Maryland Rail Trail

Nice

April, 2017 by mfkoch59

This is a beautiful trail and a pleasant bike ride. I’ve ridden several bike trails and paths and this is by far my favorite. There are a few tree root bumps in a few spots that are in need of grinding down at this point, but nothing serious, just annoying. You’ll probably see an occasional rabbit, squirrel or deer along the way. The shade makes it a little more comfortable in the summer. Buddy Lou’s in Hancock is great stop for lunch, as are other restaurants there.
Bikers may encounter an occasional pedestrian (runner) that does not want to follow the rules. ALL users of the trail are supposed to stay to the right. DoNR says stay to the right. That’s true for every trail I’ve hiked on or ridden on, including the C&O. BUT, some runners feel that because pedestrians have the right of way they can run in any direction they want. It may be safer to run on the left facing traffic on the street but not so on the trail. Be courteous (and safe), stay to the right.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

Nice Trail

March, 2017 by jackybob

We started in Newville and rode the trail southwest to just outside of Shippensburg and back. It is noted that the depiction of the trail on the traillink map is not entirely accurate. The actual trail stops along side McFarland Street in Newville and at Shippensburg Township Park just outside of Shippensburg. Also, there is parking on both ends of the trail although not indicated on the map. As for the trail itself, we found it to be in very good condition and actually considered it to be a fast trail. If you like the Buffalo Valley trail between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg, you'll probably enjoy this trail as well. Also, it appears that they are currently working to extend the trail on both ends.

Western Maryland Rail Trail

Definitely Worth the Drive

March, 2017 by jackybob

This trail is about 3 hours south of where we live, but the promise of 70 degree temperatures after 3 months of winter was just too much to pass up. So we packed up and hit the road early on a Saturday morning to drive down and check it out. We were not disappointed. The asphalt surface, shallow incline and mild temperature made for a very enjoyable ride and our many thanks go out to those responsible for the creation and maintenance of this trail. This is a very nice trail. Just a quick heads up regarding parking. We started on the east end of the trail and by the time we finished our ride the parking lot was completely full with vehicles overflowing onto the grass.
