Warmer weather has melted the snow. Mostly clear, with plenty of small tree detritus. Watch for 3 short stints (just a few yards each) of gravel at the north end. As usual, a bit of moss and plenty of root ridges - speed bumps ¿. Happy Trails.
We parked at the end of Astral road, though not a designated trailhead, there is a small parking lot for fisherman. This is approx 4.3 miles South of Franklin. A good bit of snow and ice still on the trail. Big ice chunks floating down the Allegheny (River). Sandy Creek jammed up with ice at the Belmar Bridge.
Over a foot of snow fell during 2 days at the end of January. Snowshoed on the bike trail and off the trail on the hiking trails. Knee deep snow made it great for snowshoeing. Lake Wilhelm was frozen and there were ice fisherman out on the ice.
Tunnel is closed. I ventured over the top and it's tough

Enjoyable Fall foliage bike ride through the park. Started in Petroleum Centre and pedaled up to Jersey Bridge. From there we connected to the Queen City Trail and also visited Drake Well, the site of the first oil well in 1859. This trail is paved in very good condition with a few rough spots. Follows Oil Creek, water levels very low and some areas of the creek are just all rocks. Park office is closed weekends (it's off season) but there are composting restrooms across the road. Up at the Jersey Bridge end is a plastic restroom, seasonal.
Really nice views, very scenic at parts, and get to ride by some cool landmarks
Just got done this trail 10/9. Gap trail is a wonderful easy ride. Places we stayed were awesome! Bright Morning B&B, Ohiopyle suites. We stayed in the Karly. It was great! Right off the trail!! Coffee shop is great too. They also have a laundromat. We then traveled to Meyersdale where we stayed in the hotel airstream! Gotta stay here! It was great! Know that if you need to take the train back to Pittsburgh like we had too, it can run late. 5hrs for us. We met so many nice people along the way. That’s what I think of when I think of this trail!
Friendly folks walking the trail. Nice they had a few porta johns along the way.
We rode the trail end of September 2025. Gorgeous day cool temps & sunny. Later in the day it got warmer but this trail has plenty of shade. Fallen leaves all over the trail made it so beautiful. Since we don’t have a fall season in Fla. we were embracing the beauty in front of us. We rode 8.5 miles one way. It’s a must do when you’re in the area.
We just finished the GAP trail & C&O towpath 9/20 from Pittsburgh to DC. We took 8 days and our days ranged between 32 miles to 63 miles. Highly recommend this trail. Well maintained, accessible and clean port a John’s, always had plenty of toilet paper and were frequent enough to remove any anxiety about not being able to relieve yourself in privacy. Potable water was available along the trail which we still used a filter just to be safe. Beautiful trail, friendly riders and towns to visit. We rented a full sized SUV in DC and dropped it off at the Budget on Stanwix St just two blocks from fountain starting point. Worked perfectly to get going on our ride without delay.
