Brady Tunnel Open, Trail Closure at Mahoning, Great Trail

July, 2025 by vicki1960

The Brady Tunnel opened Fall 2024 following renovation. Very dark inside (due to its doors) so you need a light. Trail closure at mile marker 55 at Mahoning Creek (since April 2025) You can detour by using nearby road, road bridge and grass path to reconnect to the trail. We parked at the Redbank trailhead on Redbank Road, just past St. Marys Redbank church. This is the intersection of Redbank Tr mile 0 and the Armstrong Tr approx mile 63. Trail surface is crushed limestone. Some of it very well packed down, some of it washed away leaving nothing but packed dirt, and some of the trail is double tracked. We didn't have any trouble on our hybrids. We went South to Mahoning and turned around and up to the Brady Tunnel passing the Redbank Coaling Tower. We went though the tunnel and continued approx 5 miles through the Sarah Furnace area. We also went towards East Brady passed the Phillipston turntable. Nearest trail services are in East Brady, otherwise you're on your own. Trail mostly shaded, follows the Allegheny River. Very peaceful., scenic and historic. See photos. Our next plan is to ride another segment of the trail.

Panhandle Trail

Nice ride

Very nice trail. Asphalt in great condition, except from Mc Donald to Falls Mills which was decent crushed limestone. Grades were very gentle, all1% or less. On a Monday we passed someone running or biking every 5-10 min. Overall a great experience

Trail closed north of Templeton

July, 2025 by tedb

Surprised to find the closure over the Mahoning Creek just north of Templeton. Looks like it has been that way for a while despite a recent review not mentioning it. No detour posted.

Great Allegheny Passage

Riding on this was a bucket list trail. Had hoped to ride further on it but had time restraints. Great trail. The rest stop in Meyersdale is wonderful. Plan someday to return and ride more of it.

Butler-Freeport Community Trail

good trail

June, 2025 by ecd4105

Rode this trail over two days and found it to be pleasant and well maintained. There is not a lot of supply options along the trail so bring what you need. Uphill from Freeport to Cabot and downhill into Butler. The last mile or so into Butler could use some attention. I would recommend this trail.

Awesome trail

Rode from East Brady to Kittanning. Very nice trail, well marked and extremely well maintained. It was worth the 2.5 hour drive to ride it.

Hellbender Preserve Trail

Short But Sweet

June, 2025 by sofiarae03

Brand new trail with a lot to see! Only 1.5 miles, this trail is perfect for a stroll along the stream on a nice day. It has plenty of benches in ideal spots and signage about the history of the railroad. The bridge and long tunnel are fascinating trail features that break up the forested areas. Lots of birds and wildlife. It starts at a decently sized parking lot and ends next to a road. Definitely recommend for anyone close by!

West Penn Trail

A Wonderful Ride

May, 2025 by dharbula

Four of us rode this trail on Memorial Day. Not many people were out riding. We only rode from Saltsburg to the Conemaugh dam. At age 78, hauling a bike up and down stairs at Bow Ridge is not for us. I love this trail! The first 4+ miles was typical tree covered rail trail along the river. Then it turns interesting as the trail goes cross-country with many changes in elevation. The hill just past Elder run is very steep with some loose gravel that can be a challenge. Then there is a long downhill run thru the woods. But these are the type of things that made the trail interesting. More trails should offer some natural diversity, even if it requires a parallel route to the main trail.

Mon River Rail-Trail

Tree down

Great trail. However there is a tree down in the trail 5 miles north of Pricketts Fort entrance.

North Hills Harmony Trail

Great little trail

April, 2025 by vicki1960

While in the area we stopped at this trail. Parked at the only parking lot, on Wexford Bayne Road, and headed South. Surface was crushed stone and about 8 feet wide. Very nice for walking or small children bicycling. We walked this trails entire length and back. Just beyond where the limestone ends is a culvert and large deep creek so you can't go any farther and there isn't anything ahead anyhow. This trail is surrounded by private property on each side, some business on the one side and residential homes on the other side. About 1/4 of a mile into the trail is the Rachel Carson hiking trail. It goes up the the chamber of commerce building.
