We rode from the Cementon trailhead out 10 miles to Slatington and back on March 19, 2025 and were disappointed in the conditions of the trail. Encountered large stones throughout the ride unlike the crushed stone base we experienced in previous rides in the spring of 24 and fall of 22. It was if someone maintaining the trail deposited large ballast rocks all along the trail surface really impacting the surface normally smooth ride. Also had to navigate many miles of bumpy tire tracks.
I love the D&L and ride it often. I’m trying to finish the entire trail and went to complete the northern most section from White Haven to Mountain Top. Unfortunately, about a mile in the amount of downed trees becomes too much (must have been from a storm). I fought through it and walked my bike but it was arduous. Around 4 miles north there was an area with multiple downed trees over the path. It was impassable so I turned around and fought my way back. I’m sad that I’ll have to wait until it’s cleared (hopefully in the spring).
Started in Simpson and headed north. The first 12 miles is very nice, except for the occasional noise from the ATV trail nearby. The next eight miles is a little rough, but not too bad. Then a mile of the trail was very soft, like they were working on the trail. After that, it becomes VERY rough - riding on balast. Some very nice scenery; has the potential to be a great trail - if they ever finish cindering the full length of the trail.
Does anyone know if the trail is open between Jim Thorpe train station & Weissport is open? We are heading there this weekend of 9/13-15/2024. It’s been closed for most of the spring/summer season 2024 for construction. Just curious if we shout just head to the Weissport parking lot. Although the trail between JT & Weissport is a fun ride.
The upper part of the trail from Summit Hill to Mauch Chunk Lake is terrible to bike on. Needs maintenance badly.
Wow. Was very bumpy. A couple of trees were down. Started at Dingmans ferry. Went north. Lots of hills! Had to stop at Zimmermans Farm Road. It got too narrow from there. Exhausted!!
We have been riding the D&H for years, as it is only an hour’s car ride away for us. We find the best parking to be at the Forest City Trailhead. It is paved, large, and has an outhouse.
We recently took a 23-mile ride on our hybrids. The trip started at Forest City, riding south to Carbondale. We turned around and went north, past Forest City, to Union Dale. At Union Dale, we turned to the south and ended the ride at our starting point in Forest City.
The trail is an interesting mix of nature, history, and artwork. For most of the ride you are in an isolated area. We had a white tail deer cross the path in front of us. There are many bridges which provide opportunity to view the stream which is running high this time of the year. In Union Dale, you will find a restored railroad car and remains of a mill. In Forest City and near Carbondale, you will find some interesting artwork.
The trail is in very good shape. It is hard packed with small gravel. At one time there were large stones near the Stillwater Dam, but they are no longer there, greatly improving the ride. While there are no large hills, there is a grade going north and you will have to work. We suggest taking this into consideration as you plan your trip.
Started our ride from the Freemansburg parking area and rode west to Bethlehem. The lack of maintenance was evident along this portion and remnants of the canal were deplorable with tons of trash and homeless camps. On our return trip to Easton we encountered the worse section of this trail between Freemansburg and the Rt. 33 boat ramp access. Multiple pot holes ,huge roots and where trees have been uprooted leaving the trail inches wide and 5 foot deep holes. Hope improvements are in the works.
We made our annual pilgrimage to the Lehigh Gorge section of the D&L trail. As usual we had a wonderful ride. Rode 48 miles round trip from Jim Thorpe to White Haven and back. Waterfalls were flowing and rapids were high, providing for some of the best scenery PA has to offer.
To add to the excitement, we saw a large rattlesnake crossing the trail. It had to be at least two feet long. Quite an exciting afternoon.
On a practical side, the White Haven renovations are complete with some of the best bathroom facilities I have seen on a trail anywhere.

The most unkempt trail I’ve ever ridden. This trail is not maintained at all and after the first 4-5 miles it turns into a completely overgrown trail that no one would find a joy to ride. Whoever is in charge of this trail should resign!! Worst ever…don’t waste your time!!
Rode 10 miles north from Jim Thorpe parking lot today. Very nice ride along the Lehigh River. Parking lot was 2/3rds full so easy to off load bikes and pay the $8 at the kiosk. Trail is well marked and easy to navigate. The only issue is the compacted stone has turned into several inches of loose sand in some areas. Between miles posts 110-112 it was most noticeable. My wife and I have regular 2 inch mountain bike/cruiser tires, so the sand slowed us down but did not stop us. Roadbikers may have more trouble. All in all it is a great section and worth Another vists. And some really nice old trains to He k out.
